Pirelli back to gravel on Italian Rally Championship

The Italian Rally Championship gets back to gravel with the Rally dell’Adriatico this weekend, round three of eight, which offers another demanding test bed for Pirelli’s tyre technology and a fresh challenge for Italy’s top drivers. Pirelli’s test driver Paolo Andreucci is currently leading the championship by three points, and is seeking to extend his advantage this weekend, co-driven as always by Anna Andreussi. The Pirelli-equipped Peugeot Italia team also heads the manufacturers’ standings – assisted by the adaptability of Pirelli’s rally tyres to the demanding terrain.

The Scorpion K tyre will be used on the rally, which is located on the eastern Italian coast, not far from San Marino. This type of tyre was recently used on Rally Argentina, helping Pirelli to record its best-ever result since returning to the World Rally Championship with privateer drivers last year. The K pattern is well known for its versatility on a range of gravel surfaces. The internal part of the asymmetric tread pattern helps acceleration and braking, while the external part puts the emphasis on lateral grip. Pirelli is also supplying drivers on the Junior championship, including Fabio Andolfi, who will make his World Rally Championship debut in Portugal later this month, as part of the ACI Team Italia that is supported by Pirelli. The rally gets underway with a ceremonial start tonight in Cingoli followed by two stages. There are nine more gravel stages tomorrow before the event finishes in the evening after 124.60 competitive kilometres. Around three quarters of the entire field will use Pirelli tyres on the Rally dell’Adriatico, including Ford Fiesta R5 driver Sebastien Chardonnet and reigning FIA Production champion Max Rendina.
