Six Pirelli-equipped cars in the top six of the GT2 class at the Valencia 1000 KM

SIX PIRELLI-EQUIPPED CARS IN THE TOP SIX OF THE GT2 CLASS AT THE VALENCIA 1000 KM

The works Porsche of Lieb-Pompidou triumphs after a very close race that was almost decided at the very last gasp. Six out of the top seven cars in the GT2 class used Pirelli PZero Racing tyres.

Valencia, 6 May 2007 - After an excellent one-two for the Pirelli-equipped GTC Ferrari 430 team at Monza, the Italian tyre firm was once again at the forefront in Valencia. This time it was the factory Porsche 997 GT3-RSR crewed by Lieb-Pompidou to benefit from Pirelli rubber, winning the GT2 class at the Valencia 1000 km - round two of the Le Mans series.

The victorious Porsche finished in front of two Ferraris, the second of which (driven by the Scuderia Villorba crew of Caffi-Zardo) was also equipped with PZero Racing tyres. The Spanish race saw an excellent global result for Pirelli, with six out of the top seven cars using the Italian rubber.

The Valencia 1000 km, run on the circuit situated on the outskirts of the Spanish town, is even tougher than the Monza race that was run in mid-April. Furthermore, the race saw the official Porsche-Pirelli of the Felbermayr-Proton team take sweet revenge for their defeat at Monza, with a notable return to form and reliability. The Lieb-Pompidou Porsche 997 GT3-RSR was always amongst the frontrunners, before making its decisive move in the last two hours to vanquish the two Ferraris and another Porsche - also using PZero Racing tyres - driven by the Werner-Ehret-Nielsen crew (Farnbacher Racing).

Pirelli Competizioni director Paul Hembery commented: "Our success at the tricky Valencia circuit underlines the strengths of our PZero Racing tyres, which carried the Porsche 997 GT3-RSR to victory in extremely difficult conditions today. Third place for the Villorba Ferrari also demonstrates that our tyres are well-suited to very different types of car - and that the performance which fell below our expectations at the Silverstone FIA-GT race was entirely down to a specific set of circumstances, rather than any underlying problem."
