The 2025 Formula 1 season in numbers

<pp:caseid>732209</pp:caseid>

Throughout the season that has just finished, Pirelli’s Formula 1 tyres covered enough kilometres to circle the globe eight and a half times. From the first free practice session in Melbourne to the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi, the tyres produced by the Milan-based company travelled a total distance of 341,099 kilometres.

This figure reflects one of the most demanding seasons in the history of the championship, after the calendar expanded to 24 races last year. On these 24 circuits, spread out over five continents, Pirelli had to deliver performance, reliability and adaptability in conditions ranging from the extreme heat of the Arabian desert to the biting cold of Nevada.

The 2025 slick tyre range, made up of six compounds, accounted for 96% of the total mileage. The two most widely used compounds, confirming their versatility and strategic importance, were the C3 (93,493 kilometres) and C4 (91,595 kilometres). These were followed by the C5 (66,255 kilometres), C2 (35,012 kilometres), C6 (22,419 kilometres) and C1 (17,368 kilometres). Wet weather tyres covered the remaining 4%: 12,893 kilometres on intermediates and 2,064 kilometres on full wets.

In total, the tyres completed 67,094 laps – with a similar split between slicks and wets: 64,519 laps on slicks and 2,578 on wets (about 4%). Across all the races, 720 pit stops were made. The record was the Spanish Grand Prix, with 53 stops in Barcelona. Miami had the fewest pit stops, with only 18.

The longest stint of the year came from Haas driver Esteban Ocon, who covered 303 kilometres on a single set of C3 tyres in Jeddah, equating to 49 laps. The Frenchman also stood out in Baku, covering 294 kilometres on a set of C4 to confirm his tyre management skills.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly recorded the longest run on the C2, completing 251 kilometres in Shanghai, while Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll covered 222 kilometres on the C5 in Baku. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg each drove 194 kilometres on a set of intermediates at Silverstone. The longest continuous use of full wets was 61 kilometres during the Las Vegas weekend: 10 laps each for the two Aston Martin drivers as well as for Hülkenberg.

The number of tyre sets supplied by Pirelli over the course of the season highlights the logistical complexity of motorsport’s pinnacle. In 2025, teams had access to 6,120 sets of slicks in total, comprising 1,800 sets of C5, 1,580 sets of C4, 1,400 sets of C3 and around 1,900 wet weather tyres. The number of tyres allocated to each car, which varies depending on the weekend format, is clearly defined by the technical regulations.

As always, temperatures also influenced tyre behaviour. The highest track temperature recorded during a session was 58.2 degrees centigrade at Jeddah during FP2, while the highest air temperature was 39.1 degrees centigrade in Bahrain during FP1. The coldest conditions were in Las Vegas, with 12 degrees centigrade on track and 11.8 degrees centigrade ambient during qualifying. During the actual races, peak track temperature was 55.2 degrees centigrade at Spielberg, while the highest air temperature was 34.4 degrees centigrade in Texas. The lowest temperatures were 15 degrees centigrade on track in Las Vegas and 14.3 degrees centigrade ambient in Melbourne.

The Formula 1 P Zero covers were not the only Pirelli tyres to take to the track. The Pirelli Hot Laps programme, featuring Pirelli-equipped supercars on the world’s grand prix circuits, was held this year at seven events. The lucky passengers completed 2,528 laps across 32 sessions, using 12 car models from seven different manufacturers.

At the wheel were 69 drivers, ranging from current stars such as Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Kimi Antonelli, and Oliver Bearman, to emerging young talents like Paul Aron, Arthur Leclerc, Chloe Chambers and Jak Crawford. Former world champions and race winners also took part – including Mika Häkkinen, Jenson Button, Ralf Schumacher, and Pedro de la Rosa – alongside endurance and GT specialists: all underscoring the breadth and prestige of the programme.

Another significant figure came from an off-track initiative. A show tyre, donated by Pirelli and signed by a selection of Formula 1 drivers, was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s during the final race weekend as part of Abu Dhabi Collector’s Week, fetching $31,200 USD. The entire proceeds were donated to the Make-A-Wish® UAE foundation, which helps make the dreams of children suffering from serious illnesses come true.

From extreme temperatures and strategic complexity to logistical challenges and the Hot Laps program, the 2025 season once again highlighted Pirelli’s crucial role as Formula 1’s global partner.

news,F1,feature stories,2025 Infographics,Formula 1

To mark the occasion, last night all the teams and drivers took part in an exceptional event at London’s O2 Arena, featuring stars from the world of music, with over 15,000 spectators in attendance. The two-hour show, celebrating an amazing history, was broadcast around the world as well as being streamed on the F1 social platforms.

2025 will also be special for Pirelli, because it will hit the 500 Grands Prix mark during the coming season. The Italian company has so far taken part in 485 rounds of the championship and will reach the 500 at the Dutch Grand Prix on 31 August at Zandvoort. Pirelli will then celebrate this milestone one week later at its home event in Monza with several special events. The first step was taken yesterday at the London show, where the company revealed a version of the Pirelli logo that will be used for all its Formula 1 communication throughout the 2025 season.

The first initiative will be a feature on pirelli.com, looking back at the fifty most significant Grands Prix from Pirelli’s time on the F1 World Championship trail. Naturally enough, it starts with the very first round of motor racing’s blue riband category, the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone on 13 May 1950. 21 cars lined up on the grid that day, with eight of them running on Pirelli tyres. They included the top three finishers, all Alfa Romeos, with the Italians Nino Farina and Giuseppe Fagioli taking the flag ahead of the English driver, Reg Parnell. It was the first chapter of Pirelli’s long and ongoing history in Formula 1, which this year will see the Italian company become the tyre supplier with the longest record in the sport.

news,F1,2024 Infographics

All the 2024 season stats: from the Earth to the Moon (almost) with Formula 1’s Pirelli tyres

The tyres completed 334,942.175 kilometres, over 65.534 laps from the first free practice session in Bahrain, to the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi, which is 94% of the distance separating us from the moon’s perigee, its nearest point to earth during the 27 day orbit of our planet.

The actual distance has increased compared to 2023, thanks to the addition to the calendar of the Emilia-Romagna and Chinese Grands Prix which accounted for a further 27,016.375 kilometres. The percentage of kilometres completed on the slick tyres has remained pretty much unchanged at 93.59%, while there was an increase in use of the Cinturato Intermediate from 5.67% to 5.84% for a total of 19,566.862 km. The Cinturato Extreme Wet was used a bit less, going from 0.64% to 0.57%. Of the slicks, the lion’s share inevitably was down to the C3, as this compound was selected for every event, although in percentage terms it dropped from 36.57% to 32.06% compared to last year. Yet again, the C4 was the second most used compound (23.47%) while for third place, at 16.84% the C5 overtook the C2 (14.97%) and the C1 was once again the least used in 2024 at 5.56%. Some of these changes in the data are down to the fact that, for the races in Melbourne and Interlagos, the decision was taken to go with a softer trio of compounds than the previous year, going from C2-C3-C4 to C3-C4-C5.
Not included in the above numbers is the data relating to prototype tyres. They were used for 2,306.944 kilometres, fewer than the previous year because in 2024 they were only used for the in-competition test at Mexico City, while last year they were used in Friday free practice in three events – Barcelona, Suzuka and, as this year, Mexico City.

The prize for the longest stint on a single set of tyres goes to Pierre Gasly, who completed 300.150 kilometres (50 laps) in his Alpine in Baku on a set of C3s, designated as the Hard at this Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc takes the honours for the longest distance travelled on a set of C2, completing 43 laps of the Jeddah track, equivalent to 265.525 kilometres. George Russell travelled furthest on a set of C4 (256.949 km, 77 laps) in Monaco, while Nico Hulkenberg completed 242.763 km, 57 laps, at Zandvoort. Yuki Tsunoda did 28 laps of the Singapore track, equivalent to 141.820 kilometres and Racing Bulls’ Japanese driver also takes the award for the longest stint on a set of intermediates (191.844 km) in Montreal, while his team-mate for the final six races of the season, Liam Lawson, went further than anyone (81.871 km) on one set of Extreme Wets.

Pirelli supplied the teams with a total of 8,016 sets of tyres. Of these, 2,718 were never used. The extreme wet and intermediate tyres were subject to a “strip-and-fit” policy which meant that tyres fitted to rims but never used, could be stripped and refitted for use at other rounds. In 2024, this meant that around 3500 fewer tyres needed to be produced. 935 sets of slicks, equivalent to 11.66% of those produced, were fitted to rims but never saw the track. In addition, a further 948 sets (11.82%) completed between one and three laps: for the most part, these are sets used in qualifying or in flying lap simulations, but the issue of more efficient tyre usage during the race weekend remains on the table.

Of all the 2024 races, the Japanese Grand Prix saw the most tyre changes: there were 46 pit stops in Suzuka. While at the other end of the scale, there were only 19 pit stops in Jeddah. Actually, the quietest Sunday in terms of action in pit lane was in Monaco, where thanks to a red flag on the opening lap, all the drivers were able to make the obligatory change of compound during the interruption, so that after that, there were only a further seven pit stops.

If there was a prize for the hottest race of the year, at least in terms of air temperature, it would go to Interlagos, with 35.6 °C recorded during Sunday’s race. In contrast, Silverstone’s temperatures ranged from 10.9 °C, rising to 13.9 °C in the race. As for track temperatures, there were some old favourites and some newcomers compared to 2023: the prize for the hottest goes to the Hungaroring with 58.6 °C, although the race in Imola saw a surprising 52.5 °C. The coldest bit of track overall was Silverstone (12.8 °C) while during a race, Las Vegas was coldest at 16.8 °C.

news,F1,2024 Infographics

The Italian series, now in its second year, is part of the F1 in Schools championship, an initiative supported by F1 that involves schools in 60 countries around the world and more than one million students, with the aim of enabling boys and girls to enrich their knowledge of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and bring them closer to the world of Formula 1 from a technical point of view, thus stimulating their interest in a possible professional career in motorsport.

All the model cars, designed by the students using CAD systems and manufactured using CNC machines and 3D printers, have 'standard' Pirelli branded wheels. The edge is customised with the graphic reproduction of the Pirelli P Zero tyres used by real F1 cars on the track.

As in real life, the aerodynamics of the models are first tested virtually using computational fluid dynamics software and then in a smoke-filled wind tunnel. The acid test is to launch the models, fitted with compressed air cartridges, down a 24-metre straight to determine the fastest design.

Pirelli has set up online seminars that students will be able to follow in the coming weeks to better understand how tyres work in Formula 1 and what data the Milan-based company's engineers use to develop tyres for the world's most prestigious championship.

Mario Isola, Pirelli Head of Motorsport: "For years, Pirelli has been an enthusiastic supporter of projects aimed at informing the younger generation about the many opportunities that motorsport can offer. During the championship, our track engineers often meet groups of young students who are interested in learning more about certain STEM subjects, also to consider a career in racing. By listening to the experiences of our team members, we hope that they can gain inspiration for what could be their professional future, in a stimulating and highly competitive environment that can be incredibly rewarding”.

F1 in Schools Italy, born from the collaboration between Innovation Farm and Dallara, enters a crucial phase today. The participating teams, made up of a maximum of 6 students, will face a qualifying round at the end of February, from which a shortlist of possible national finalists will emerge. The top two groups will eventually be able to represent our country at the World Finals at the end of 2025.

news,F1,General Information,feature stories,F1 in Schools

New specification of slick tyre from Silverstone

<pp:caseid>573747</pp:caseid>

Pirelli Motorsport has asked the FIA’s authorisation to introduce a new specification of slick tyre from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone (7-9 July) onwards. The request under article 10.8.3 of the Formula 1 technical regulations has now been approved.

The new specification introduces materials planned for 2024, with the move made necessary because of the increase in car performance – in terms of both speed and downforce – seen over the first few races compared to pre-season simulation data supplied by the teams. It’s also likely that this performance will increase still further over the rest of the season.

Pirelli’s Head of Motorsport, Mario Isola, said: “We’ve seen how much more performance the 2023 cars have compared to last year throughout the opening races of this season, and that is thanks to the extraordinary pace of development shown by all 10 of the teams. In Miami, for example, the pole time was nearly two seconds faster than last year, but the same sort of progress has been seen during races as well. Pirelli’s simulation work has always been aimed at not only supplying a product that hits the performance targets specified by stakeholders, but also anticipating any potential problems and reacting to them quickly. The new specification contains materials that we have already developed for 2024, which will make the tyres more resistant without affecting any of the other technical parameters or their behaviour on track. To allow all the teams to test the new construction on a level playing field, Pirelli will supply two extra tyre sets per car to be used during FP1 and FP2 at the Spanish Grand Prix.”

news,Motorsport,F1,Press Releases,Formula 1

The document outlines technical characteristics that are broadly in line with the tyres used today and their relevance to technology transfer from track to road, putting a particular emphasis on sustainability.

The framework described by the FIA is closely aligned to Pirelli’s motorsport strategy and so is of great interest, with the Italian company having been Global Tyre Partner to the sport for more than a decade, since 2011. A definitive decision about Pirelli’s participation in the selection process will naturally be taken after a detailed examination of the FIA’s document.

news,Motorsport,F1,Press Releases,General Information,Formula 1
