The supersport tyre comparative organized by Motorrad is an initiative which is always strongly awaited by the readers, Germans and globally, and by the tyre manufacturers. This is due both to the renowned prestige of the magazine and to the independence and comprehensive analysis carried out by the expert journalists and testers of the magazine during the test. Winning the comparative tests organised by Motorrad has always been a source of pride. Issue 11/2017 of the German magazine compared the Pirelli DIABLO ROSSO™ III with the best supersport tyres available, equipping six Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R in the 120/70 ZR17 sizes for the front and 190/55 ZR17 rear. Pirelli DIABLO ROSSO™ III has thus been elected the winner, showing the tyre to have the most balanced behaviour in all the tests made, thanks to the characteristics of sportiness and dry on-road handling which have traditionally characterized Pirelli’s products. Specifically, the tyre of the Milanese brand, has scored 453 points, out of a total of 500 points available, with a gap of as many as 14 points from the last tyre ranked, the Michelin Power RS and the Continental Sport Attack 3. The test took place on a road trip between Germany, France and Spain and on two tracks: the Alcarrás Circuit for the dry track test and Bridgestone’s Technical Center Europe in Rome, precisely in Castel Romano, for the wet test. DIABLO ROSSO™ III managed to overcome and excel in all the tests: on track it was appreciated especially for the precision and for the high level of grip, whereas on the wet test it was the product with the highest scores for braking distance. In addition, DIABLO ROSSO™ III has impressed with its low level of wear and performance consistency proved during the 4.000 kilometres ride.

Paddock News,news

Thanks to the performance of its SCORPION™ MX tyre line Pirelli has achieved its 68th World Title, confirming itself as the most successful tyre brand in the history of motocross. After Antonio Cairoli's MXGP title, the famous tyre brand completed the double in 2017 with Pauls Jonass' MX2 crown. Cairoli, riding his Pirelli-shod KTM, won the FIM Motocross World Championship for the ninth time. The Italian champion closed the title speech in the MXGP class one round before the end of the Championship in the TT Circuit of Assen. After two seasons marked by some injuries, Cairoli centered on the ninth title of his incredible career that has seen him at the top of world rankings for fifteen years. The 31 year old wrapped up the title before the end of the season, after showing amazing consistency throughout the 2017 championship – including six GP wins and finishing runner-up in a further four. For much of the season, Cairoli has used Pirelli’s Scorpion MX32 Mid Soft on both front and rear, by far the most popular tyre choice amongst all riders using the Italian brand in MXGP and MX2. The final round of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship was another success for Pirelli. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is the new FIM Motocross World Champion in the MX2 class. He takes the world title for the first time in his career. On the tough and technical course of Villars sous Ecot, a hard-pack track that became slippery due to frequent rain showers, the new development rear SCORPION™ MX Softdemonstrated a range of usage beyond expectations and proved to be competitive even in extreme muddy conditions. Jonass captured 7 Pole Positions, 14 heat wins and 6 GP wins this season as the first one was at first round of the Championship, in Losail, Qatar and the last came at the MXGP of Czech Republic.

Paddock News,news

The Italian tyre company will be continue to serve as the official tyre supplier for all classes of the motorcycle racing series. Pirelli in agreement with Dorna, the promoter and organiser of the World Championship and with the FIM, the International Motorcycling Federation, has extended, as per contractual conditions, the current supply agreement, set to expire in 2018, for two further seasons. Started in 2004 and now in its 14th consecutive season, the technical partnership established by Pirelli with the Federation, promoter, teams and racers of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championships can already boast the record of the longest running control tyre supplier in the history of International motorsports. Right from the outset, Pirelli, realised that the production bike derived series was a great development platform for its tyres, therefore and decided to give the Championship production tyres. Undoubtedly, this choice proved to be one of the best: based on the motto "We sell what we race, we race what we sell". This confirmation in the role of Sole Tyre Supplier demonstrates the passion and dedication that Pirelli has always played in motorsport, confirming an important feature of the Italian company's DNA. The commitment placed in the control tyre championships however, has not deprived Pirelli of being leader also in open tyre championships and competitions. To remain faithful to the philosophy that has always characterised Pirelli's commitment and strategy in the FIM Superbike World Championship - to use production not prototype tyres - Pirelli in 2013, became the first brand to abandon 16.5 inch sizes, introducing new 17” DIABLO™ Superbike tyres, a size most commonly used by motorcyclists.

Paddock News,news

Pirelli is the only tyre manufacturer able to boast a Hall of Fame of 66 World titles (since 1980) in the most important international series for off-road motorcycles, thanks to the performances of SCORPION™ MX32™. The history of the Motocross Champions of the last 40 years has been and continues to be a Pirelli prerogative, winning numerous titles with the most important representatives of such discipline. Most noticeably 7 World Championships with Belgian legend Stefan Everts, 5 with the Italian Antonio Cairoli, 9 (3 each) with the Belgian riders André Malherbe, Eric Geboers and Jöel Smets and 3 more titles won with British rider David Thorpe. The most recent 3 titles were conquered with the Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings and twice with the Slovenian Tim Gajser, just to name some of the riders that over the years have decided to rely on Pirelli and with the Italian tyre manufacturer, have won their titles. Besides the relationships with the riders, the collaborative relations that Pirelli has managed to establish with the motorcycle manufacturers has been crucial as well. As many as 18 World titles won with KTM, 16 with Yamaha and another 16 with Honda, besides the 10 with Suzuki, the 3 with Husaberg and the 2 with Cagiva, demonstrate the ability of the Italian company to produce tyres for any manufacturer. In particular, since 2008 until today, Pirelli has won as many as 14 World titles with the manufacturer from Mattighofen: five consecutive titles with Antonio Cairoli in MX1 and three with Jeffrey Herlings in MX2, besides the ones won with Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin and Jordi Tixier.

Paddock News,news

Pirelli will equip the Black S with P Zero tyres, also available as part of the Pirelli Color Edition. Just as in Formula One, there are coloured markings on the sidewalls, in line with Pirelli’s perfect fit strategy. Unveiled in March 2017, at Geneva International Motor Show, Project Black S explores the potential of a future performance grade for INFINITI, Pirelli’s contribution will include the design and construction of bespoke tyres developed exclusively for Project Black S. Suggesting a radical reinterpretation of the INFINITI Q60 coupé, the Project Black S features a stand-out, aerodynamically-optimised new design. It also hints at how a performance hybrid powertrain – developed in close collaboration with the Renault Sport Formula One Team – could significantly enhance the performance and dynamics of an INFINITI production car. Pirelli was attracted to the Project Black S as a true track-to-road technology transfer project. Thanks to its experience in motorsport and Formula One, Pirelli embarks on a new and challenging collaboration to develop dedicated tyres for a car that features outstanding performances coupled with extreme aerodynamics. Through this partnership, Pirelli’s renowned sporting DNA is demonstrated once more, guaranteeing the best compromise between performance and safety.

Paddock News,news

The company, who have shone throughout last year, delivering on-time quality to the supply chain or end product, came from three continents – Europe, Asia and America – and six countries (China, Italy, Germany, Japan, Romania, the United States, and Thailand). In the sixth year of the annual awards are the suppliers of primary materials who have been the most successful, scooping four prizes of the nine available. This emphasis is justified by the numbers: 46% of Pirelli’s total expenditure (equivalent to 1.54 billion euros in 2016) goes towards primary materials. The recipients of the awards, as well as primary materials suppliers, included producers of machinery and moulds, cyber security experts, logistics firms, and event management companies. The 2017 Supplier Awards winners are: Jiangsu Xingda Steel Tyre Cord Co Ltd (China), one of the premier producers of metallic reinforcements; Cabot Corporation, a US firm, which is a leader in carbon black production; Zeon Corporation, a Japanese company that supplies synthetic rubber; Thai Eastern Innovation, an important producer and exporter of natural rubber headquartered in Chonburi; Karl Eugen Fischer GmbH, a German supplier of tyre production machinery; Himile Mechanical Science and Technology, a world leading supplier of tyre moulds; Com Divers Logistic Srl (Romania), a key player in the logistics sector; Reply, an Italian firm specialising in cyber security and IT services, and finally Newtonlab, an events company from Italy. Going back to 1909, when the very first Giro d’Italia took place, Pirelli was already equipping bicycles. In fact, 30 of the 49 finishers that year completed the arduous race on Pirelli tyres. Among the great cycling champions to have run on Pirelli was also of course the legendary Fausto Coppi, who chose Pirelli tyres for his Bianchi bike. So, Pirelli’s love affair with bicycle racing is an enduring one and with the company’s sponsorship of the Under 21 class of the Giro d’Italia, it was renewed in earnest this year. Another reminder as well of Pirelli’s key priority to support the careers of promising young talents: on both two and four wheels. This is how the PZero™ Velo range has come into being. Pirelli’s bicycle tyres are the product of more than two years of in-depth research, development, market analysis, lab and road testing. Pirelli has developed a new patent dedicated to the cycling world: SmartNet™ Silica, a new generation high-tech molecule which delivers maximum performance, balanced on all fronts, conceived exclusively by Pirelli’s chemistry labs. Composed of more than seventeen elements, the Pirelli compound was synthesized at the company’s Milan Bicocca Technology & Innovation Centre. The researchers who worked on this project are the same ones who worked on the F1 P Zero compound, currently the only tyre used in F1 racing. “Perfect Balance” is one of the key characteristics of Pirelli’s new bicycle tyres: tyres with optimal and balanced performance in terms of rolling resistance, wet and dry grip, handling behaviour, puncture protection and longevity. PZero™ Velo prototypes were tested in Sicily. Specifically, several tests took place on Mount Etna which offers – within a few kilometres - a broad choice of weather conditions, altitudes and surface types among the most demanding in the world. The PZero™ Velo range includes three different models directed at the three main road uses and colour-coded like the P Zero used in F1 racing. The silver label indicates the PZero™ Velo, aimed at road racing, is light weight and the most versatile. Now the Pirelli’s ambassador for sustainability extends its ‘AA’ European tyre label rating to all new sizes, setting a new standard. Cinturato P7 Blue in fact boasts a maximum European tyre label score on nearly all the sizes in the entire range. This important result has been achieved thanks to the technical evolution that has positioned the Cinturato P7 Blue as a pioneer. P7 Blue became a benchmark for owners of saloon cars and coupés with medium to large engine capacities, claiming 11 podium places from 14 international tyre tests in the automotive press – including three test wins only last year. Cinturato P7 Blue continues to break its limits, improving certain aspects of performance in line with the latest trends in the automotive industry, where sustainability is an increasingly important priority. The latest version of Cinturato P7 Blue reduces rolling resistance with a subsequent benefit in terms of fuel saving and CO2 emissions reduction, helping the environment. At the heart of this upgrade is the Low Rolling Technology Package: a dedicated package that combines new construction processes, especially in the belt area, with the use of the latest internal materials. One of the most notable results achieved by Pirelli’s engineers was a reduction in rolling resistance thanks to the use of some patented new-generation internal materials. This was achieved without compromising dry and wet grip levels, to guarantee high levels of driving safety. The new technology has also led to an increase in tyre life in the order of 10%.

Paddock News,news

<pp:caseid>266097</pp:caseid>
Pirelli has renewed its range of products for GT racing. The Blancpain GT Series uses just one tyre for the entire season. As a result, Pirelli has to come up with one tyre that works well on different cars, circuits, temperatures and races, for both amateur and professional drivers. The slick tyre that will be used for 2017 Blancpain GT Series, which takes in both sprint and endurance races, is called the P Zero DHD. This tyre features a new front and rear construction to make it more suitable for the current field of GT3 cars. The profile has changed to present an optimized contact patch against the track surface and there is a new front size: 325/680-18 (previously 315/680-18).

With the combination of new front and rear constructions, as well as slightly wider front tyres, the front and rear axles now feel more connected. This makes the cars easier to drive for amateur as well as professional drivers. The tyres are also equally at home on front, mid and rear engined cars: all of which are seen on the Blancpain GT Series. As a result, this provides a good base for the organisers to build an accurate balance of performance system.

The GT4 category is increasingly becoming a stepping-stone to GT3, with performance characteristics approaching those of the top category in the Blancpain series. In order to cater for the increased performance, and create similarities with the tyres used in GT3 to help drivers step up, Pirelli has started to evolve its range of GT4 tyres as well, with these cars using the new P Zero DHA product, also in 18-inch size.

Paddock News

The on/off road enduro tyre specifically designed for the latest generation of adventure, dual purpose and enduro street bikes, is a real innovation in the tyre industry, managing to reconcile and encompass the best off-road performance with the features of an enduro street tyre. The new product provides traction on dirt tracks and stability at high speeds: it is easy to handle and agile on the road, providing comfort and grip in all driving conditions. The Pirelli SCORPION™ RALLY STR presents a profile optimized for on-road use thanks to the increased rubber surface in contact with the ground under the patch area. The geometry and ratio between tread height and width is totally new and an absolute novelty on the market. Thanks to these adjustments, Pirelli was able to obtain greater stability on the road without compromising off-road traction. The SCORPION™ RALLY STR tyre comes in ten different sizes, including an exclusive and customised set for the new Ducati Scrambler: the Desert Sled born between the desert and mountains of California is an openly off-road version inspired by the off-road motorcycles that made history in the United States during the sixties and seventies. On this the model, equipped with unique SCORPION™ RALLY STR studded tyres for the event, Ghedina tested the new set during a fun afternoon that combined his experience with snow and bikes and demonstrated the outstanding performance of both products. According to the former national athlete, the new tyre passed the test with flying colours and let him ride an innovative racing bike in complete safety.

Paddock News,news

From this year, Pirelli’s chef at every grand prix of FORMULA 1 - to which the Italian company is exclusive supplier since to the end of 2019 - is Spyros Theodoris, the winner of the inaugural Masterchef Italia competition in 2011. His origins are Greek, but these days he couldn’t be more Italian. At every race weekend, he prepares haute cuisine at the highest level in record time, but without compromising on quality or variety. His five-star culinary creations served in Pirelli’s hospitality represent the highest standards of cuisine at grands prix, where the Italian firm welcomes hundreds of guests during every race weekend. Drivers, team members, journalists and celebrities: a true cross section of society holds Pirelli’s food in high esteem, which is cooked to order in a distinctly Italian style, while acknowledging a variety of international influences. The food perfectly reflects the nature of grand prix racing itself, which visits around 20 different countries every year. The sites include: color.pirelli.com, the landing page for this new product; shop.pirelli.com, the site for pre-orders; and Connected Roads, the news and information hub within Pirelli’s global site (pirelli.com). At color.pirelli.com , the site dedicated to the Pirelli Color Edition line, visitors will find two main tools to help them: “Configure”, used to select the right colour of tyre for a selection of car models, featuring the ability to see the tyres in action and to share the results on social media; and “Pre-order”, which redirects users to the e-commerce site at shop.pirelli.com to pre-order tyres for their car (for the car models selected). Color.pirelli.com includes a sneak peek at the Pirelli Connesso system, which will be available as of this summer in the United States and beginning this autumn in Europe. Pirelli Connesso is a system integrated into the tyre that features a sensor connected to an app to provide drivers with a series of crucial data on how the tyre is functioning, while also giving users access to a range of personalized services. The user experience on the site shop.pirelli.com begins with visitors selecting the model of car they own, or sending feedback, if desired, in the event a certain model isn’t yet included in the list. The next step, then, is to select the tyre size followed by the colour of the tyre, which can be selected from among all of the various Pantone colours. The pre-order process concludes by entering the general details of the customer and indicating the preferred tyre shop, if any, for installation. Both of these sites, color.pirelli.com and shop.pirelli.com, are available in nine countries: China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. Finally, in addition to news and information, the Connected Roads hub presents a variety of banners that direct users back to the shop and to the Color Edition site.

Paddock News,news

The Italian company confirms itself once again as the undisputed leader in terms of Original Equipment for the top end of the market. As seen at each edition of GIMS, many of the most prestigious autos presented have chosen to wear Pirelli, showing once again the strong bond between Pirelli and top names of the automotive industry. More than 60% of prestige cars exhibited at the Swiss show - from McLaren to Pagani passing through Porsche - are equipped with Pirelli tyres, many of which are part of the Pirelli Color Edition launched in Geneva. This statistic is particularly important, knowing that the nearest competitor equips 24% of the cars. The share of cars equipped with Pirelli tyres has increased by 21 points compared to last year consolidating the leadership of the company in the prestige segment. Pirelli's presence in the premium segment is also significant, with more than 35% of all equipment. As a result, Pirelli strengthens its presence in Geneva, confirming Italian tyres as the preferred choice of the most prestigious automakers in the world. This year as well Pirelli is present at the Geneva International Motor Show with a stand dedicated to announcing its two latest innovations: Pirelli Color Edition and Pirelli Connesso. This app supplies information on how the tyre is working as well as offering a series of personalized services. Created in Italy, but seen all over the world. Having entered the sport again in 2011 following three previous stints in the 1950s, 1980s and 1990s, Pirelli is now on its seventh season of Formula 1 as part of an agreement that runs until the end of 2019. Pirelli will be as well title sponsor of the Spanish Grand Prix from May 12-14, followed by Hungary in late July and Belgium in late August. Hard, Medium, Soft, Supersoft, Ultrasoft, Intermediate, Wet: every compound is brand new for this year, with entirely new constructions as well. The objective for all these tyres, shared with the FIA and the teams, is to deliver tyres with a higher level of performance together with lower degradation, allowing the drivers to push hard during every phase of the race. The most obvious visual difference is that the tyres are now around 25% wider, both front and rear, increasing from 245 to 305mm at the front and 325 to 405mm at the rear. This is part of a package of measures expected to cut lap times by around five seconds relative to 2015. Kimi Raikkonen’s fastest time of the Barcelona test (1m18.634s) was quicker than 2015 Nico Rosberg pole position in Spain (1m24.681s). The improvement was already more than six seconds, rather than five and could have been even bigger. For the first five grands prix, from Australia to Spain, teams have identical tyre allocations: seven sets of the softest compound available, four sets of the middle compound, and two of the hardest compound. From the sixth grand prix in Monaco, normal rules apply: teams will select 10 sets of the 13 available.

Paddock News,news

Luxury and sports cars are the two of the fastest-growing sectors in today’s global automotive market. Currently there are around more than 2 million prestige and supercars registered, with an average yearly growth rate of 15% in the last 5 years: compared to 4% for the rest of the market. These statistics confirm the foresight of Pirelli’s vision, which has focussed its strategy on the Prestige segment in order to strengthen the world leadership in this exclusive area. Pirelli’s leadership in the very upper echelons of the automotive market is the result of a product strategy based on the “perfect fit”. This means that every tyre is individually engineered for each car, designed and produced using dedicated technologies, processes and materials. By tailoring these elements according to the requirements of each car manufacturer’s engineers at the design phase, Pirelli is able to develop tyres specifically conceived for different models. Two new tools have been developed by Pirelli to more effectively interact with Prestige end users and help increase Prestige tyres sales through our clients: the Prestige Label and the Prestige Price list. Starting from February, the brand new Prestige Label is applied on all “Prestige” tyres. Thanks to the exclusive sticker, Pirelli Prestige tyres are easily recognizable by all the people involved in the delivery process in order to provide a premium service in terms of quality and speed. Furthermore the new Prestige label makes easier to communicate to Prestige car owners that Pirelli Prestige tyres are special in terms of latest technology, being custom made for the best cars in the world. To give more relevance to Pirelli leadership in one of the most strategic segments, the new edition of Pirelli Prestige Price List is now available. With an unique layout and high end touch and feel the Prestige price list stands out from the traditional one, and it is exclusively dedicated to the Pirelli summer and winter products developed for Prestige car models. For the first time the Pirelli broad range of products is organized by car model, highlighting the deep link between Prestige cars and Pirelli homologated tires.

Paddock News,news

The Tyrecampus is a digital marketing tool for Pirelli dealers and sales force to learn about Pirelli’s products. Pirelli has launched a renewed version of its e-learning system aimed at helping to become better tyre consultants for customers.

The new site features a landing page that is visible to all with a restricted area accessible through a simple log-in procedure. After being enrolled, users will receive an email to access the platform. Inside, they will find a tailored training plan, making the learning path suited to each specific cluster or even user. Each PoS has an account where it can add members to its team and assign them Paths to complete. Once the PoS Team has completed its Paths it will receive a certification. Thanks to the mobile friendly adaptability, the users are able to access the platform everywhere from whatever device (smartphone, tablet, PC). The mission is to give the fastest and engaging access to the product knowledge in order to enhance the selling proposition and improve the sales success factor.

The old Tyrecampus platform involved 16.354 users (8.366 active users) in 22 countries. 2.945 users completed the certification path and 1915 of them returned in the platform after the certification. The new platform can now be more effective, simple, complete in contents and engaging. It is studied to improve and consolidate the engagement with the users. A new interface, simpler and faster to navigate, has been tailored on the user: contents are divided into Paths, which contains modules that can be e-learning courses on product or sales; new contents, such as the new P Zero course as well as the upcoming courses on Marked Tyres and Pirelli Technologies, will be delivered this year, other than many other on the pipeline. The new Tyrecampus homepage presents information by relevancy: in “News” there are direct communications from Pirelli, edited by the Local Training Manager.

Paddock News,news

These true masterpieces of rubber were visible to the public on the occasion of the Salone del Mobile Milano (Milan Design Week) as part of the artist’s exhibition entitled “MULTIPLEX, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” set up insidethe Galleria Manzoni. The collaboration between Pirelli and Tom Dixon was born almost by accident during a visit in the summer of last year of the British designer to Pirelli Headquarters in Milan. Dixon visited the Pirelli HangarBicocca, the non-profit foundation, established in 2004, which has converted a former industrial plant in Milan into an institution for producing and promoting contemporary art. He also visited the Pirelli Foundation, in which are stored historical archived documents on the history and activity of the company from its establishment in 1872 to the current day and the Research and Development Center in which the designer focused in particular to observe the processes carried out in the area where grooves on the tyres are cut by hand. During the visit, the artist was impressed and fascinated by the work seen on the tyres expressing his willingness to cooperate in some way working with Pirelli onto tyre rubber. Considering the growing interest and attention from some motorcyclists regarding the tread pattern design of motorcycle and scooter tyres, which in some markets is becoming a key element in the choice of a tyre as much as the performance and quality offered by the tyre itself. Pirelli gave Tom Dixon free reign and the opportunity to give vent to his creativity in the customization of some scooter tyre tread pattern designs.

Paddock News,news

The teenager joined Peugeot Italia alongside multiple Italian champion Paolo Andreucci, driving a 208 T16 R5 navigated by Risto Pietilainen.

Pirelli has backed the record-breaking Finn since he made his first steps in rallying, giving him his World Rally Car debut at Bettega Memorial in Bologna, which he nearly won at his first attempt. Rovanpera also used Pirelli tyres to win the Latvian championship, as well as the first round of the Finnish championship this year, ensuring his place in history. Now he will continue his learning programme on Italian asphalt, where he aims to gain experience of sealed surfaces using Pirelli’s latest asphalt products.

“Pirelli has been an important presence in my career, right from the very beginning,” said Rovanpera, whose famous father Harri also used Pirelli during his factory career on the World Rally Championship. “Without Pirelli I wouldn’t have this opportunity, so I’m very happy that I am able to continue my learning in such a fantastic environment here in Italy. My team mate is the most successful driver in the Italian championship and the team has a track record like no other. Thanks to the support from Pirelli’s engineers I have learned so much already about how to get the best out of the P Zero asphalt tyres, and I am looking forward to adding to my knowledge in the future.”

Pirelli has a long history of supporting young drivers in rallying, through initiatives such as the Pirelli Star Driver scheme and WRC Academy. Thanks to these programmes, drivers such as Craig Breen, Elfyn Evans, Hayden Paddon and Ott Tanak have all secured factory drives at the top level of the World Rally Championship.

Paddock News,news

At the Geneva Motor Show, Pirelli presented coloured edition P Zero and Winter Sottozero tyres. This innovation underlines Pirelli’s entry as a leading player in the digital tyre world and form part of the Italian firm’s ‘tailor-made’ strategy. The Pirelli color edition was born to satisfy the increasing demand for personalisation from prestige and premium clients. Pirelli thanks to its synergy and cooperation with the most prestigious premium and prestige carmakers and thanks to international researches understood there is a growing and demanding market of consumers who want to enhance the design of the car and looking for exclusivity. Pirelli keeps on talking about perfect fit and personalization and Color Edition Tyres are the maximum example of the next generation of customization for the end user. The Pirelli color edition is presented as a super-speciality in proprietary technology, joining other Pirelli specialities such as PNCS (a noise-cancelling system), Run Flat, and Seal Inside (technology allowing a tyre to repair itself in the event of a puncture). The base colours for the coloured edition will be red, yellow, white, and silver, previewed on some of the most eagerly-anticipated cars at the Geneva Motor Show. As well as the base colours, options are available in every other colour on request. The innovations introduced by Pirelli with the color edition of P Zero and Winter Sottozero tyres are two-fold: the variety of colours available, and the stability of the sidewall colours themselves, thanks to Pirelli’s ground-breaking and exclusive technology. Pirelli’s engineers have used the experience gained in FORMULA 1, where coloured tyres have been a reality since 2011, to refine an innovative labelling system. In particular, a new material has been created that acts as a protective barrier to maintain the brilliance of the colour and avoid fading caused by time and use, without affecting performance. Coloured edition tyres are available to pre-order straight away for the P Zero and Winter Sottozero ranges in the prestige sector, from 19-inch size upwards, before then being extended to premium cars.

Paddock News,news

There will be no lack of product innovation, starting with the tyres made specifically for use in track competition. Most significant of all is the new Superpole® tyre, introduced at Aragón, the first European round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season, where Pirelli has been the sole tyre supplier for all classes uninterrupted since 2004. Compared to the past seasons, when the qualifier tyre was only able to guarantee one single timed lap, the most important feature of the new Pirelli tyre is its ability to provide the riders with a minimum of 2 and up to a maximum of 4 timed laps, depending on track characteristics. Pirelli has also decided to promote several slick development solutions to new standard solutions for 2017. DIABLO™ Superbike has new rear solutions and a new front standard SC1 compound, not only available to riders competing in WSB and to all the riders taking part in national championships, but also to any racers in the world. Starting from this year, DIABLO™ Superbike, used in the top class, and the DIABLO™ Supercorsa SC, used in the Supersport and Superstock 1000 categories, are also available to the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, the newborn racing class for small engine motorcycles, which are actually becoming the new entry level for the motorcycling enthusiast into the world of supersport bikes. Pirelli’s commitment has been re-confirmed also in off-road competition, starting with the FIM Motocross World Championship, where the SCORPION™ MX family has been undergoing a slight restyling and repositioning process. As for the front tyre, the riders will have the chance to choose between SCORPION™ MX32™ in Mid Soft or Mid Hard compounds, whereas there will be 4 different compounds for the rear: in addition to SCORPION™ MX32™ in Mid Soft or Mid Hard compounds, SCORPION™ MX Soft and SCORPION™ MX Hard will also be available. Lastly, Pirelli participates in several other competitions at a national level. First of all, the MCE British Superbike Championship, which Pirelli has been supporting as Presenting Sponsor and Sole Tyre Supplier for all classes until 2020. In addition to this, Pirelli has also confirmed its important position in the German National Championship, France Superbike FSBK (French National Championship), CIV (Italian Speed Championship), Superbike Series Brazil, in Malaysia and Philippines with the Superbike Series and in many other national championships.

Paddock News,news

And it’s designed as a place where employees from different divisions within Pirelli can come together to generate new thinking on the way things are done. It will mix people from logistics, marketing and customer service, for example, with research scientists and quality-control experts, and make everyone feel like a valued contributor to the process. The Sala Futura has been creating a buzz in a company more used to industrial processes and heavyweight R&D than the fast and furious ideas generation of Silicon Valley stars such as Google and Facebook. A working group of eight people – drawn from departments across the business – was tasked by Giuliano Menassi, Pirelli’s head of R&D, with developing this new space for innovation. And one of them came up with the name “Futura” drawn from a favourite Italian song of 1980 by the late, great thinker and performer Lucio Dalla, in which he shares his hopes and dreams for the future. The group has also created phrases to give everyone an idea of how the space should be used. Some of these “rules” posted on the walls are: “This is not a meeting room, you are always welcome”; “Feel free to listen and give your opinion”; “We don’t find solutions but we find new questions.” Inside the Sala is an area for serious brainstorming, with a giant wall of TV screens at one end and a magic whiteboard with a touch screen at the other. The boardroom-size table splits into desks for smaller group work. Then there is a space with bean-bag chairs and flip charts for more free thinking and a breakout area with kitchen facilities, table football and a library. A design agency has advised on the look and feel of the place – from purple and orange floors to the mass of plants. Through a doorway is the Materioteca® where people will be encouraged to pick up new materials, make things and test them out.

Paddock News,news

Forever attentive to the improvement of employees’ quality of life and working environment, the company inaugurated a library at its headquarters in Milan’s Bicocca area and one at its plant in Bollate, which will flank the one already opened with success inside Pirelli’s industrial hub in Settimo Torinese. Spreading culture by bringing books into factories and the work place has always seen Pirelli on the front lines. Important places of aggregation, culture and innovation, company libraries are born to encourage employees to read, get informed, gather ideas and compare notes. Factories and work places in general are special places where even culture is produced. Science fiction books, crime novels, best sellers, non-fiction books and children’s books represent the initial stock of around 3,500 volumes at Headquarters in Milan and plant at Bollate: a number which, when complete, will exceed 7,000 units. Many titles and different genres that go beyond the traditional idea of a company library destined to contain only volumes connected with the company’s business. The opening of the new libraries is part of a tradition, which saw Pirelli open its first company library almost 90 years ago. It was in 1928, in fact, that the first library for employees enrolled in the “Dopolavoro Aziende Pirelli” opened and already counted close to 800 titles. For its researchers and engineers Pirelli had also created a Technical-Scientific library composed of around 17,000 volumes on the rubber and cables technology from the 1800s to modern times. This collection has been available since 2010 to the public, students and researchers at the Fondazione Pirelli.

Paddock News,news

Partnering with the best car makers worldwide, Pirelli’s technicians design and test tyres to fit the personality of each car model. Marked tyres can be recognized from a specific marking on the sidewall that indicates they have been designed to be fitted on a specific car model. By choosing marked tyres, clients enhance their car’s performances, while ensuring themselves a unique driving experience. In order to better explain the importance of marked tyres to all the parties involved in the value-chain, from the car manufacturers to the end user, Pirelli often organizes training sessions, factory visits and workshops. After the well-established events for tyre dealers – which include factory visits to Pirelli’s production plants – the Italian tyre manufacturer has launched a series of events dedicated to Prestige customers who, by visiting the production hubs of Bicocca and Settimo Torinese, can fully understand the state-of-the-art technology behind Pirelli’s tyres and the level of driving security they provide to end users. The 22nd of September 2016, Mercedes’ After Sales managers from all around Europe participated to workshops and track tests organized by Pirelli and experienced first-hand the difference between MO (Mercedes Original) marked tyres and standard tyres, which hadn’t been specifically designed for Mercedes vehicles. In particular, the track test on Vairano circuit was a great success: an expert test driver on a Mercedes CLA 45 AMG demonstrated the difference between standard and MO tyres as far as handling and stability when braking and speeding up are concerned. The technical features of the MO tyres were tested also during a gymkhana speed test on a Mercedes E220. On the 23rd of September, 100 members of the French Ferrari Club visited Pirelli’s plant in Settimo Torinese and witnessed the fine-tuning production process behind Pirelli’s tyres. Lamborghini’s and Maserati’s After Sales managers have also participated in similar events. Thanks to these workshops, track tests and factory visits, Pirelli is able to underline effectively the high-quality technical features of marked tyres and the importance to fit them on premium and prestige cars. This is a key means of promoting the Pirelli brand as well as an excellent differentiation strategy for tyre dealers with a strong focus in the Premium and Prestige segments.

Paddock News,news

From the Laferrari Aperta and GTC4 Lusso T to the Audi Q5, and Porsche Panamera to the Land Rover Discovery, Pirelli has developed tailor-made tyres for each model.

The new LaFerrari Aperta will be exclusively equipped with P Zero Corsa Asimmetrico tyres in 265/30ZR19 at the front and 345/30ZR20 at the rear. Pirelli’s engineers, working closely with their counterparts at Ferrari, have increased the tyre’s contact patch to reduce understeer, improving the way that the car turns in and elevating overall grip as it travels through the corners.

Pirelli reduced rolling resistance by a good 15% on the new P Zero tyres dedicated to the GTC4 Lusso T. This mission was accomplished by managing the deformation of the tyre and optimising the contact patch.

The Pirelli Noise Cancelling System reduces noise from the tyres by 2-3 decibels, which is equivalent to about half the total cabin noise, leading to a notable improvement in driving comfort. Pirelli has extended the application of its PNCS technology to a number of different models which will be launched during the Paris show. The Audi Q5 comes equipped with P Zero tyres complete with noise-cancelling technology. Pirelli’s engineers managed to maintain high levels of performance and driving pleasure while complying with the latest regulations regarding noise pollution and CO2 emissions. The same objective has been reached with the most recent Land Rover Discovery. The fifth generation of the classic British SUV wears Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season tyres, from 18 to 22 inches. The FIA World Council, which met during the week before the Malaysian Grand Prix, announced that for the first five races of 2017 each driver will have exactly the same tyre allocation: two sets of the hardest compound available, four sets of the medium compound available and seven sets of the softest compound available. The first five grand prix of 2017 (from Australia on March 26 to Spain on May 14) will take place too close to the date when the teams will have to choose their tyres for each race, according the current regulations. Pirelli is introducing wider rubber next year. The front tyres will go from the current 245mm width up to 305mm, while the rear tyres grow from 325mm to 405mm. In total, this means the tyres are 25% wider. Enormous leaps which Pirelli has undertaken since August with three teams (Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull) via a dedicated tyre test programme that will conclude in Abu Dhabi on 29 November: two days after the final grand prix of the season. A busy winter of analysis, optimisation and refinement will take place, aiming to define the final specification that will take to the track at the first official test around three months later.

Paddock News,news

These will be available with a complete range of sizes, and will progressively replace and expand the current DIABLO™ SCOOTER model during the course of next year. ANGEL™ SCOOTER has a strong family feeling with the ANGEL™ range, Pirelli's sport touring line, as can also be seen by the tread pattern which follows the multiple award-winning and highly popular ANGEL GT™. This tyre is the guardian angel of urban mobility because it provides excellent riding comfort, handling and performance on wet roads, ideal characteristics for daily use in the urban jungle. DIABLO ROSSO™ SCOOTER, on the other hand, is inspired by the DIABLO™ family DNA, specifically the DIABLO ROSSO™ line which represents the Pirelli supersport tyre range. This tyre also takes its tread pattern from another pillar in the Pirelli range, the DIABLO ROSSO™ III which made its début this year, immediately gaining popularity among bikers all over the world. The new tyres in the Pirelli scooter range made their public début at the 74th Milan Motorcycle Show (EICMA), from 8th to 13th November 2016. The dominating manufacturer was undoubtedly Kawasaki: the Akashi-based manufacturer, in fact, won both the Manufacturer Title in WorldSBK and in WorldSSP, thanks in part to the victories that riders Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) brought home during the season. Ducati riders Chaz Davies and Kyle Smith are, respectively in the WorldSBK and WorldSSP categories, the final winners of the Pirelli Best Lap Award 2016, the award given to the riders who have achieved the fastest lap of the race most times during the year. It is time for Pirelli to draw up the totals, finishing out the thirteenth consecutive season as Official Sole Tyre Supplier for all the categories in the FIM World Superbike Championship. This is an absolute record in the two and four wheel motorsports world which will increase even further as Pirelli's supplier contract is valid through to the 2018 season. During 2016, Pirelli's development operations were focused mainly on improving the SC1 compound standard solution, in other words, the softest front tyre. The objective was achieved with the introduction of the new U0176 solution available from the Assen round. This solution managed to guarantee the grip that the SC1 had historically provided, with the addition of characteristics such as stability and protection against cold tearing that had historically been characteristics of the standard SC2 tyre. Now, as had already been done in the past for the rear, the front DIABLO™ Superbike range has achieved optimum performance with all of the available compounds and it is definitely a point of reference in the market.

Paddock News,news

The curtain fell on the last round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, the Grand Prix of USA, hosted on the Californian track of Glen Helen. The American track presented a hard-base terrain with a loose and sandy top layer across a demanding and spectacular layout. For all Pirelli riders - in both MXGP and MX2 categories - the tyre choice came down to SCORPION™ MX32™ Mid Soft, front and rear; a tyre that on this occasion proved its excellent performance by facilitating yet another victory for Jeffrey Herlings in MX2 and podium positions for Antonio Cairoli and Tim Gajser in MXGP. Cairoli was a superb runner-up in MXGP. The Italian former winner showed his skills in two lively heats, finally competing without being hampered by any physical problems. Freshly crowned World Champion Gajser finished the race on the same points as Max Nagl but was awarded with third place thanks to his superior ranking in the second moto. Herlings dominated both races in MX2 leaving his opponents to fight for the second place. Max Anstie took fourth overall and led Jeremy Seewer in fifth. The Swiss rider ended the championship as runner-up behind the unbeatable Herlings.

Paddock News,news

Every single type of weather was encountered during the Rallye Deutschland weekend, making tyre and set-up choice particularly challenging throughout all three days. On the first day, the roads were largely dry with damp patches. On day two, the morning was mixed, but heavy rain in the afternoon allowed the Pirelli drivers to use the new Cinturato RW rain tyres, which have been especially designed to maximise grip and water expulsion in full wet conditions. The short final day was slightly damp in the morning, then dry in the afternoon.

Pirelli’s rally activity manager Terenzio Testoni said: “As we expected, Germany provided one of the most challenging and changeable asphalt rallies of the entire championship, with an enormous range of conditions encountered. The most difficult day was Saturday, with heavy rain in the afternoon, meaning that the new Cinturato RW full rain tyre could make its debut. In particular, the drivers praised the safe feeling that our new tyre gave them, in spite of the marginal conditions. This allowed us to secure another podium in WRC2 against factory-backed opposition, in keeping with our philosophy this year of supporting privateer drivers.”

Paddock News

The Pirelli driver equals the record for the most number of titles in the sport, with his victory at the Ilirska Bistrica hillclimb in Slovenia. Faggioli won seven out of 10 rounds this year to clinch the championship, driving a Norma M20 FC protoype. Faggioli used Pirelli’s hillclimb tyres to secure his latest title, which use a lot of the cutting-edge technology seen in FORMULA 1. These P Zero hillclimb tyres are available in three compounds – soft, supersoft, and ultrasoft – as well as a Cinturato wet tyre for heavy rain. The unique and challenging conditions of hillclimbing require a tyre that can deliver top performance instantly, with a rapid warm-up even in the cold conditions that often characterise this high-powered and high-altitude sport. “Tyres are such a crucial part of this sport, so I want to thank Pirelli for all the improvements we have made over the course of the year,” said Faggioli. “The team also has done a fantastic job. It wasn’t such an easy start to the year, but things got better and better, so to equal the record is absolutely fantastic. I couldn't be happier.” The 37-year-old has spearheaded Pirelli’s development of its hillclimb tyres, which have proved to be extremely effective in a huge variety of conditions and are manufactured in Pirelli’s new motorsport facility in Slatina, Romania.

Paddock News,news

Currently Pirelli supplies around 170 car championships all over the world, approximately 100 of which are exclusive supply agreements. The races will take place at the famous Macau Guia Circuit in the Far East: combining a 6.120-kilometre lap that is extremely fast and narrow with limited run-off area and a slippery street surface. Pirelli now succeeds the previous tyre supplier for the Formula 3 World Cup at Macau that held the FIA-sanctioned contract since 1983, completing the Italian firm’s renowned ladder of talent that can take young drivers all the way from karting, through Formula 4, and right up to Formula 1. Pirelli currently supplies a single-compound P Zero F3 tyre for a variety of global Formula 3 championships from Italy to Brazil. This tyre is specifically tailored to the demands of a Formula 3 car, striking the right compromise between performance and durability. The same size is also used for Formula 4: the stepping-stone to Formula 3, and a Cinturato wet tyre is available to cater for wet conditions. The FIA GT World Cup – which acts as a showcase for GT manufacturers and drivers all over the world – was previously supplied by Pirelli during its debut last year, featuring the best endurance racers in the sport. For GT racing, Pirelli supplies a variety of tyres to different global championships, including its advanced P Zero DHC tyres for the Blancpain GT Series that were introduced last year. These are again available in just a single compound but have proved to be more than capable of coping with a wide variety of conditions, race tracks, and vehicle architectures. There is also a WH tyre for wet conditions.

Paddock News,news

At Spa this year we supplied a record number of tyres on what was one of our busiest weekends of the year” said Pirelli’s circuit activity manager Matteo Braga. The all-new Rowe Racing BMW M6 crewed by Philipp Eng, Maxime Martin and Alexander Sims has won the Spa 24 Hours, after the Z4 won with Pirelli last year. The 65 crews that started the Spa 24 Hours used the full range of Pirelli tyres over the course of the epic race, which was generally less rain-affected than in previous years and so allowed competitors to use mostly the DHC slick tyres rather than the WH rain tyres. The competition was extremely close: even after nearly 18 hours of racing, the top two were separated by just half a second, with the winner in doubt right up until a torrential rainstorm with just half an hour to go. Up until the heavens opened, this was also one of the most reliable Spa 24 Hours seen, featuring only a minimal number of retirements. Key to the BMW’s victory was its ability to maximise the mileage of the tyres during longer stints and the cooler conditions of the night in particular, without a noticeable drop-off in pace. As well as endurance, the P Zero tyres supplied to the championship also demonstrated plenty of speed: despite incurring penalties adding up to eight minutes due to a technical infringement, one of the Mercedes GTs that originally dominated the super pole session fought its way back up to second overall from the very back, with three Mercedes in the final top 10.

Paddock News,news

Global presence, innovation, quality, speed, sustainability and level of service were the evaluation criteria Pirelli used to select the nine companies that have received the “Supplier Awards 2016”. This fifth edition of the awards took place in Milan, where the CEO and Executive Vice Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera, along with the Director of the Milan company’s Procurement Department, Pierluigi de Cancellis, honoured nine companies operating in various sectors: from ones that organise events to others supplying strategic IT solutions and from those specialised in logistics to raw-material producers. The following companies are the protagonists of the 2016 Pirelli Supplier Awards: Glanzstoff Sicrem, an Italian manufacturer of textile reinforcement materials; Trinseo, an American group specialised in synthetic rubber; Wuxi Quechen Silicon Chemical, a Chinese supplier of silicon; Birla, an Indian supplier of carbon black; Prashida Aneka Niaga Tbk, an Indonesian supplier of natural rubber; Hewlett Packard Enterprise, a leading US IT company; Alpha Technologies, an American company producing laboratory instruments for R&D; Fandango, an Italian event organiser; and, lastly, DHL Express, a German logistics group. Pierluigi de Cancellis, said: “The Pirelli focus is increasingly on the Premium segment, sharing with its suppliers a business approach in which flexibility, speed, transparency and commitment to ongoing and sustainable innovation form the bases of the supply relationship. This is why the relationship can be described as a true partnership, centred on shared growth and looking to the future. As well as raw-material suppliers, this year we have rewarded companies operating in logistics and IT, demonstrating multiple and diversified skills, combined with those of our Group, which help further Pirelli’s success thanks to innovative contributions driven by know-how and experience.”

Paddock News,news

The company has opened P Zero™ World, a premium tyre shop focused on prestige products and services. Located on Santa Monica Boulevard near Beverly Hills, the 750 square meters location features state-of-the-art equipment, luxury retail design, three service bays for tyre changes and includes an open concept waiting area complete with iconic rare supercars, an espresso bar, and store displays to showcase Pirelli’s motorsports history, OE partnerships, the Pirelli Calendar and vintage advertising. Pirelli chose Los Angeles for its first location as it has the highest concentration of luxury and sports cars in the world. Geotargeting and advanced digital marketing approaches will be used to appropriately connect consumers with the brand and its dealers. “Los Angeles serves as the perfect backdrop for the launch of this project, as it provides the perfect mix of business related strategic elements -- such as the high concentration of prestige vehicles -- with an exciting and active car culture which produces passionate consumers and tastemakers,” says Global Motorsports and Prestige Project director Paul Hembery. In the U.S. alone, the forecasted growth in the prestige segment is 11% in 2016 and Pirelli estimates its market share of the global original equipment high and very high-end car segment is approximately 50% thanks to its “perfect fit” OE philosophy: made-to-measure tyres developed by the Italian group’s technicians for each specific model in cooperation with car makers’ own engineers. The new P Zero™ World is a continuation of strategy to maintain and increase Pirelli’s market share for the high and very high-end vehicle segment. Additional P Zero™ World locations are planned around areas of high concentration of high-end luxury vehicle ownership globally. http://www.pzero.com/en-us/pzeroworld/index.html#

Paddock News,news

In 2015, in particular, almost half of Pirelli’s tyre revenues came from Green Performance products, almost double 2009 and above the target in the 2013-2017 sustainability plan. These results are the fruits of intense Research & Development activities at Pirelli’s laboratories. The aim has been to develop tyres with advanced technological and performance levels, whilst ensuring better environmental performances such as reduction of rolling resistance and noise, lower weight and greater endurance. Among the most significant results of the company’s commitment to the safeguarding and protection of the environment is the reduction of water drawing. Thanks to the effort of all production sites worldwide, from 2009 to today the water savings have totalled 30 million cubic metres. With 20 factories worldwide, employing around 37,000 people, Pirelli has a long tradition of initiatives in favour of internal communities and the local communities where it operates. Among the former, personnel training occupies an important place, and 2015 saw an increase in the average number of training days per person to 8.3. A figure, which for the third consecutive year, exceeds the 7 day per person target indicated in the 2015 industrial plan.

Paddock News,news

As well as being the maximum expression of high technology and performance, guaranteeing total driving pleasure, Pirelli tyres constantly strive to achieve the highest levels of safety, both for people and the environment. Now Pirelli joints the FIA (Federation Internationale De L’Automobile) to safeguard the rights and promote the interests of motorists and motorsport all across the world. Pirelli has signed a new four-year agreement in support of the FIA’s Action for Road Safety campaign. One of the primary goals of the campaign, launched in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, is to educate and better inform road users on the importance of respecting the rules of the road. According to the World Health Organisation, road crashes are today the number one killer worldwide of people aged between 15 and 29. As a Global Partner of the campaign, Pirelli will promote the FIA's "10 Golden Rules" for road safety through all of its networks. Pirelli will also organise training programmes, as well as projects to raise awareness on safe driving, in collaboration with a selection of FIA Member Clubs. The existing partnership between the FIA and Pirelli relating to the FIA Mobility Conferences and FIA Sport Conferences has also been extended.

Paddock News,news

The award was handed over to Pirelli’s researchers Gianni Mancini and Vincenzo Boffa, who have been working for four years on the project “Prototype CVA: Automatic Visual Control of the tyre”. The project was born in Pirelli’s R&D laboratories in Milan and has seen the important collaboration of the University of Bologna and of the Turin Polytechnic, further demonstrating the growing support provided by Pirelli to the world of Italian research. The CVA is an automatic system of product analysis which uses innovative technologies of artificial vision and automation to assess potential defects of the final product. Pirelli has developed the algorithms necessary to study images and see potential defects, introducing a really interesting innovation which could be very useful in processes which today can only be made manually. These algorithms are capable of identifying any defects and flaws in every part of the tyre, guaranteeing the necessary response in time frames that are compatible with the mechanical cycle.

Paddock News,news

Pirelli driver Kajetan Kajetanowicz continues to lead the challenge in his LOTOS-backed Ford Fiesta R5 as he bids to successfully defend the title he won last year. He began his campaign in style, taking two second-places and a third. A Pirelli driver is also second in the championship, with Alexey Lukyanuk returning for more ERC in 2016 after finishing third in the championship last year. Stepping up to a Ford Fiesta R5, Lukyanuk won the opening round of the 2016 FIA European Rally Championship and finished second on the Azores Airlines Rallye. Lukyanuk sits second in the ERC standings, just 15 points behind Kajetan Kajetanowicz. Pirelli’s rally activity manager Terenzio Testoni commented: “We’ve maintained the overall lead in the European Rally Championship and won all the stages apart from two. We’ve had three very different types of event so far on the European championship, on both old and new asphalt as well as gravel, but the consistent hallmark is that Pirelli is always at the forefront of the action.”

Paddock News,news

Named the Silverstone 500, this round was different to other British GT races, with endurance key as all classes completed a single three-hour race. As always, Silverstone placed high demands on the tyres through its famous fast corners including Copse as well as Maggotts and Becketts. Due to heavy rain at the start, the entire grid began on the Cinturato WH tyre, but with the track drying and just an hour to go, some teams moved onto slicks, the P Zero™ DHC tyre for the GT3 category and the DH tyre for GT4, which seemed to be the best option. Jonathan Wells, Pirelli British GT race engineer, said: “The WH performed very well with the majority of teams completing the first two hours on a single set of tyres, and the slicks performed as well as expected in the cool and damp conditions in the last third of race.” The race started under the safety car due to the poor weather conditions and it was a close fought race, but Keen and Minshaw eventually took the win in their Lamborghini after a series of incidents, meaning the safety car was in place for large parts of the race.

Paddock News,news

Following on from the P7 summer tyre and the All Season, now the Cinturato Winter has arrived. The latest product wearing the famous Cinturato brand is transferring to medium-sized cars the same technological innovations developed for tyres fitted to performance cars, especially when it comes to safety. And in fact, this new tyre is specifically designed to appeal to the touring market, from city cars to compact SUVs in sizes from 14 to 17 inches. The Cinturato Winter is intended especially for countries where legislation and climatic conditions necessitate the traditional switch between summer and winter tyres, such as Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Eastern Europe. It is a cross-border project that has been worked on by Pirelli engineers from Milan and Germany, with the support of Pirelli's principal car manufacturer partners such as BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. It will be produced in Pirelli factories in Northern Europe. Underlining the fact that safety has principally guided the development of this new product, starting from the tread pattern, the Cinturato Winter has "Now Snow'' written on the sidewall. When the tyre starts to wear and performance on snow is compromised, the first letter 'W disappears and instead all you see is "No Snow". So Pirelli's new seasonal tyre is the first winter tyre to actually 'talk' to its drivers, clearly indicating the level of wear beyond which it becomes dangerous to drive on snow. The sophisticated tread pattern of the tyre also helps to scoop up snow and sweep it towards the inside of the tread, guaranteeing maximum stability and traction under braking. Water expulsion is increased by 76% and braking distances have been reduced. Longitudinal grooves act a bit like zips and allow the tyre to maximise the area in contact with the road and adapt itself to the demands of icy or snowy surfaces. The increased flexibility also means that there is a better distribution of force within the contact patch, which helps to extend tyre life. In fact mileage has been increased by 10%. Thanks to the innovative tread pattern design, the new Pirelli Cinturato Winter cuts back on road noise considerably, both internally and externally.

Paddock News,news

Pirelli researchers worked hand in hand with engineers from Porsche to develop “bespoke” tyres for each model in the targeted ranges. Rallying legend Walter Röhrl helped develop the new rubber giving valuable tips on the driving properties of tyres. All classic tyres developed and released by Porsche bear the official quality seal of the Porsche company. The common designator for all factory releases is an “N” on the tyre sidewall, which is added exclusively to those tyre models that have performed very well in testing before release. To earn this designation, the new tyres must undergo tough testing on Europe’s test tracks and fulfil a total of 33 strictly evaluated criteria. The line covers classic Pirelli tread patterns from the CN36, P7 and P Zero™ Rosso series, allowing the cars’ owners to maintain an authentic appearance while also gaining the performance of modern tyre technology, such as state-of-the-art compounds and modern construction. The new N series cover 32 recommendations for Porsche model ranges 356 B and C, Boxster (986), 911 (G Model, 964, 993 and 996) and 914 as well as for the transaxle cars: 924, 928, 944 and 968. The offering covers 161 summer and 131 winter tyre size designations. Pirelli is also offering the semi-slick P Zero™ Trofeo R, in rim diameters of 16, 17, 18 and 20 inches, for those Porsche owners wishing to run their classics in competition or test them on tracks as part of the Porsche Driving Experience driver training program.

Paddock News,news

This test involved Christian Kellner, a former FIM Supersport World Championship rider, and it saw an assigned rating to each tyre set for handling, steering precision, stability, grip, behaviour to the limit, braking stability, feedback transmitted from the tyre to the rider and also the best lap time on track. DIABLO™ Superbike was tested using the SC2 compound (hard) for the rear tyre and the SC1 compound (soft) for the front one.

In particular, Pirelli DIABLO™ Superbike were the best tyres overall regarding the grip offered and the behaviour to the limit, as well as achieving the fastest lap of 1’32.46 with about a 2.5 tenths of a second advantage over their nearest rival. PS positively comments on the results obtained from DIABLO™ Superbike, calling it simply the ‘tyre of dreams’ because it allows you to go even faster on track while always ensuring clear feedback and alerting the rider when near to the limit.

Since 2005, the year of its birth, DIABLO™ Superbike is both the top product of the racing range of the long P brand, the protagonist of MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship and also a benchmark for those seeking the ultimate performance on track.

Paddock News,news
