From its launch in 2019 to today, Elect technology has already exceeded 300 homologations: tyres that are specifically adapted to the needs of individual models. Demand for these products has rocketed: compared to the same period last year, new homologations in the first half of 2023 grew at more than double the speed (+125%) of last year, underlining Pirelli's increasing prominence in electric mobility. The only hydrogen car at the IAA Mobility Show, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, was also equipped with Pirelli tyres. This particular car is fitted with the FSC^®-marked P Zero: the only tyre in the world made with natural rubber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council^®.

PIRELLI ELECT: TAILORED TECHNOLOGY FOR ELECTRIC CARS

Pirelli Elect is a package of technologies developed to complement the unique characteristics of electric and plug-in hybrid cars. These vehicles have specific needs – with heavy weight and instant torque – that make tyres even more important than usual. The structure and materials used in Elect tyres are able to resist these demands and respond with greater reactivity, making them even more durable. A silent powertrain puts the accent on acoustic comfort, and Pirelli technology allows cabin noise to be reduced by up to 20%¹. Battery range is equally important, and this can be extended by tyres with reduced rolling resistance. Tests carried out by Pirelli have shown how mileage can be increased by up to 10% on a full charge².

PIRELLI P ZERO E: 100% ELECT ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE

The new Pirelli P Zero E, a high-performance tyre designed for electric cars, is the latest product to hit the market – with Elect technology standard on all sizes. This is the first tyre made using more than 55% of materials of natural and recycled origin³ (independently verified by Bureau Veritas) and the only UHP (ultra high performance) tyre on the market to have obtained a triple A label score throughout the entire range.

SmarTUBE X: three times thicker than its previous version, giving it the maximum robustness and puncture resistance, for an urban, gravel or e-bike use

Milan (Italy), 13 September 2023 – Pirelli adds two new models to its range of premium inner tubes dedicated to road, gravel and e-bike tyres. The Pirelli SmarTUBE EVO and SmarTUBE X have just hit the market, respectively dedicated to the Pirelli P ZERO clinchers and the CINTURATO and ANGEL tyre families.

SMARTUBE EVO AND P ZERO: A COMBINATION OF SMOOTHNESS AND COMFORT

The SmarTUBE inner tubes family is made of TPU that is a thermoplastic polyurethane characterised by high elasticity and mechanical resistance, and extreme lightness. The new SmarTUBE EVO features a new TPU formula and offers a performance made of flexibility, smoothness, and comfort that can compete with latex inner tubes, while also guaranteeing up to 50% less weight compared to the latter. The new SmarTUBE EVO also allows an extra 5% less rolling resistance compared to the already fast Pirelli SmarTUBE on the market (*).

This evolution of the famous SmarTUBE models has responded to the feedback of the World Tour teams that work with Pirelli, to boost the performance centred on the P ZERO tyres’ lightness and speed, and extends these benefits to all those who love the convenience of the “clincher + inner tube” system.

Bright yellow as per “tradition”, available in a single version, which covers sizes ranging from 25-622 to 28-622, the new Pirelli SmarTUBE EVO comes with three different Presta valves, completely black: from 42 mm, 60 mm up to 80 mm for high-profile wheels. 

SMARTUBE X: ROBUSTNESS AND HIGH PUNTURE RESISTANCE

Pirelli SmarTUBE X, on the other hand, is the new TPU inner tube dedicated by Pirelli to the tyres of the CINTURATO and ANGEL families: three times thicker than the current CINTURATO SmarTUBE (which it is replacing), the SmarTUBE X offers robustness and puncture resistance. It is particularly suitable in city settings or for fast commuting.

SmarTUBE X comes in two separate lines: CINTURATO SmarTUBE X for tyres from 28-622 to 40-622 and from 40-622 to 50-622, with Presta or Schrader valves, and ANGEL SmarTUBE X for tyres from 28-622 to 42-622 and from 42-622 to 62-622, with Presta or Schrader valve options.

The new SmarTUBE EVO and SmarTUBE X, in line with Pirelli’s TPU inner tube family, are extremely compact: -50% space taken up in the jersey’s pockets or in the backpack compared to the traditional butyl inner tubes, while preserving - like the latter type - the necessary airtightness.

The first sizes are already available on the market, the range is expected to be complete by the end of September 2023.

SmartNET Silica compound: perfect on cold or wet tarmac, offering all-round performance

Produced in the renovated Milano-Bollate facility 

Milan (Italy), May 3, 2023 – Pirelli presents the P ZERO Race 4S TLR road bicycle tyre, the tubeless version of the Pirelli all season tyre, produced in the renovated Milano-Bollate facility. The new all-round tyre follows the success of the P ZERO Race 4S clincher version. The new tyre has remained aesthetically unchanged from the tube type version and incorporates, within it, new technologies and prior patents that capitalize on Pirelli’s experience in the high-end cycling sector

TREAD WITH ALL-SEASON COMPOUND 

The P ZERO Race 4S TLR, in fact, features a tread made with the award-winning SmartNET Silica compound, the same used in the Cinturato Velo tyre. A Pirelli patented mix of materials, SmartNET is a silica-based molecule whose configuration differs from traditional silica molecules: its elongated stick form has a natural self-aligning tendency, providing numerous advantages in terms of performance. Among these, the most prized for use in the all-season tyre is certainly its natural chemical affinity for water, and more generally, with low temperatures, which characterise a product with outstanding qualities on wet and/or typical cold-weather surfaces.

SPEEDCORE: COMPOUND WITH ARAMID

Combined with the external SmartNET Silica, the structure of the P ZERO Race 4S TLR is equipped internally with the innovative SPEEDCORE technology, which uses a layer of compound containing Aramid particulate. SPEEDCORE technology favours the hold of air, has low resistance to rolling and offers increased protection against punctures. This new technology was developed thanks to Pirelli’s experience in the field of racing compounds; it was introduced for the first time on the market with the P ZERO Race TLR tyre, also a product of the Milano-Bollate facility.

In the case of an all-season tyre like this one, the use of SPEEDCORE technology makes the tyre casing to roll smoothly and the combination with the SmartNET Silica compound - which favours grip even on wet surfaces typical of autumn and winter – result in a product to use all year long, with all-round performance. 

THE TYRE WITH THE “RACING” FEEL

The new P ZERO Race 4S TLR tyre is the perfect choice for those who want a highperforming tyre, for competitions or training, ideal all year round: high-performing and fast in summer, high grip and resistant in winter, with that “racing” feeling typical of the Pirelli “Race” family.

P ZERO Race 4S TLR is already available in 28-622, 30-622 and soon in size 32-622 too. Manufactured in the renovated Milano-Bollate plant

Milan, Italy, 20^th March 2023 – Pirelli is launching its new P ZERO Race TLR, the tubeless version of its clincher tyre for road bikes. This product has been redesigned with new technologies and is manufactured in the modernised and innovative Pirelli plant in Milan-Bollate.

The new tubeless ready tyre by Pirelli is the fastest of the entire road bike range: this feature is sought not only by amateurs but also by the World Tour teams with which Pirelli collaborates: Trek-Segafredo and AG2R Citroën; more recently also the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team.

The P ZERO Race TLR is the result of a complex project that involved many departments of Pirelli’s R&D, as well as the teams that tested it on the ground: it features an innovative technology called SPEEDCORE.

SPEEDCORE: REINFORCED CASING

The structure of the P ZERO Race TLR features a tyre tread made with the SmartEVO formulation, a cutting-edge compound of polymers created to offer an excellent grip and low rolling resistance. The tyre is different in the inside compared to its predecessor: here the use of the new SPEEDCORE technology offers low rolling resistance and great protection from punctures, thus reinforcing the casing – without making it stiff – through the use of aramid fibres. Aramid in fact has chemical-physical features that allow for high resistance to traction, cuts and heat, thus favouring the mechanical properties of the tyre itself.

FAST TYRE WITH HIGH RESISTANCE AND LOW RIGIDITY

This new technology has been developed thanks to Pirelli’s experience in the field of compounds for racing tyres and has allowed for the reduction of rolling resistance, thus improving the smoothness of this tyre by 24% compared to the P ZERO Race TLR’s predecessor (Pirelli in-house testing carried out with tyres in the size 28-622). The aramid fibres bind evenly with the other chemical elements in the rubber, arranging themselves homogeneously in the structure, thus favouring the high mechanical properties required of low rolling resistance, high puncture resistance and low rigidity. So thanks to SPEEDCORE the structure of the new P ZERO Race TLR is much more flexible and thinner than a traditional butyl rubber layer, with improved mechanical resistance characteristics compared to the previous version of the product and able to offer a better level of puncture protection than a classic bead-to-bead fabric casing.

Compared to the previous version on the market, the weight and excellent grip and reliability characteristics in dry and wet conditions remain unchanged, confirming the product as a reliable and high-performance all-rounder, a benchmark in its category.

P ZERO Race TLR is already available in sizes 26-622, 28-622, 30-622 (all also in the ‘Classic’ version) as well as size 32-622 with black sidewalls. The sizes 35-622 and 40-622 will enter the market later this year.

P ZERO AND SCORPION TYRES, MADE TO MEASURE

The 707 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque generated by the Aston Martin DBX707’s engine make this luxury SUV the most powerful of its kind in the world. In order to cope with these extremely high levels of performance, Pirelli’s engineers have created new tailor-made tyres for it on top of the 22-inch tyre already made for the DBX: P ZERO in 285/35R23 size at the front and 325/30R23 for the back. These P ZERO tyres benefit from a compound that’s derived from that of Aston Martin’s famed grand touring models in order to enhance the car’s performance as much as possible, with greater rigidity in the sidewall thanks to a specific geometry in the canvas that makes up the structure of the tyre. The considerable size of this tyre allows for a more direct steering response and increased cornering speeds on track. For those wanting a solution that they can use all year on many different types of road surface – dry, wet or snowy – the SCORPION ZERO ALL SEASON is also available (in two sizes) complete with its distinctive A8A marking, which identifies these tyres as having been specially made for the Aston Martin DBX.

SILENT TYRES WITH MAXIMUM COMFORT

To ensure that driver comfort is as impressive as performance, these tyres are equipped with PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) in the front tyre size, which allows for road noise to be reduced. The PNCS technology is made up of a sound-absorbing material placed within the tyre that soaks up all the vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted into the cabin, meaning that the rolling noise from the tyres is reduced.

MADE IN ITALY WITH MIRS TECHNOLOGY

The tyres for the Aston Martin DBX707 are made in Pirelli’s Settimo Torinese factory, just on the outskirts of Turin, using the robots from Pirelli’s MIRS system (Modular Integrated Robot System) and the most advanced technology dedicated to the production of ultra high performance road car tyres.

Elect tyres, such as the P Zero developed for the German all-electric flagship, distinguish themselves thanks to their supreme driving comfort with contained road noise as well as immediate grip, a long range and inherent safety.The intense development dedicated by Pirelli to the BMW iX underlines the Italian firm’s commitment to design specific tyres for electrified cars, BEVs or plug-in hybrids. These products are created from the beginning to enhance the individual characteristics of electric cars, as denoted by the ‘Elect’ marking on the sidewall of the tyre itself.

TYRES FOR SUPERIOR BATTERY RANGE

The Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres developed for the BMW iX focus on low rolling resistance, to allow the car to travel for more kilometres after a charge. They even have an ‘A’ rating on the European tyre label to certify this particular feature, allowing the driver to take full advantage of all the car’s performance.

The specific profile of the tyre also influences the mileage, thanks to its superior aerodynamics compared to the standard P Zero. The external profile has been modified to ensure that the tyre protrudes less, reducing aerodynamic turbulence while improving overall efficiency, without sacrificing adequate rim protection. The ‘sunk’ lettering on the side of the tyre is just as distinctive, hollowed into the sidewall rather than standing out in relief.

SILENCE AND COMFORT

Particular attention is paid to comfort for BMW iX drivers, with the dedicated Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres also equipped with PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) technology, which reduces road noise. PNCS technology consists of a specific sound-absorbing material placed inside the tyre, which dampens the acoustic vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted into the car, with a consequent reduction in road noise. The tyre structure has also been optimised to cope with the considerable weight of this 100% electric zero-emission vehicle, ensuring optimal levels of driving safety in all traffic conditions.

P ZERO AND TONALE, SPORTY DNA

The P Zeros for the new Alfa Romeo Tonale were developed to emphasize the car’s sporty traits and safe performance in dry asphalt and wet. The synergy between tyres and vehicle is the first goal of Pirelli’s Perfect Fit strategy and the AR marking on the side of the P Zero certifies that the tyres have been developed specially for the Tonale.

FROM CONCEPT TO PRODUCTION

The creation of the Pirelli P Zero for the Alfa Romeo Tonale entailed cooperation between the teams of the two Milanese brands, beginning with the concept for the first Tonale shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019. The course of the production tyre’s design, then, required processes of analysis and design, including virtual analysis and development, the heart of Pirelli’s development strategy, concluding with validation of their performance through tests carried out on Stellantis’s  Balocco track and Pirelli’s track at Vizzola Ticino. A wholly Italian tyre, designed in the R&D centre in Milan and produced at the Settimo Torinese plant, one of the group’s most advanced production facilities.

A CENTURY LONG BOND 

This latest collaboration between Pirelli and Alfa Romeo represents a new chapter in a longstanding bond between the two companies, a bond that began roughly one century ago with the advent of the car and the first racing competitions. In fact, the Pirelli Superflex Cord was the tyre fitted on the Alfa Romeo GT Tipo P2 that in 1925 won the first Car World Championship, with such drivers as Antonio Ascari, Giuseppe Campari and Gastone Brilli Peri who won the decisive race on the Monza circuit. Performance and sportiness have always united Pirelli and Alfa Romeo, both on track and road.

A new technical collaboration between the two companies has resulted in a specific Pirelli P Zero tyre, part of a family of Ultra High Performance tyres that offer the right balance between driveability and comfort, maintaining the sporty feel that’s typical of the Mustang thanks to Pirelli’s know-how that comes directly from the world of motorsport.

P ZERO FOR ELECTRIC POWER

The tyres developed for the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition are available in 245/45R20 103Y XL size with ‘Elect’ markings on the sidewall, which denote Pirelli tyres dedicated to electric and hybrid vehicles, whose performance is strongly influenced by the tyres. Thanks to the technical specifications of the compounds and structure, Pirelli tyres with ‘Elect’ markings offer a number of advantages: low rolling resistance to increase driving range, reduced noise levels to improve driving comfort, immediate grip to cope with the instant torque generated by electric motors, and a specific structure to support the weight of a battery-powered vehicle.

These original equipment tyres for Ford’s new zero tailpipe emissions sporting SUV, created according to Pirelli’s ‘perfect fit’ philosophy, allows drivers to fully enjoy the performance of the all-wheel drive machine equipped with two electric motors: one at the front of the car and one at the rear. These are designed to help improve performance and tackle the most challenging driving conditions both in the dry and the wet, thanks to a perfect car and tyre package. The car distributes the torque from the motors to each axle independently, providing more reactive acceleration and sharper handling compared to the standard rear-wheel drive. Pirelli’s engineers have created P Zero tyres for the Mach-E GT Performance Edition to put the accent on performance, as well as the highest standards of driveability and comfort.

WET AND DRY HANDLING – NO PROBLEM FOR THE P ZERO

evo’s annual performance tyre test is one of the toughest in the market, combining objective test results with the subjective opinions from a selection of experienced testers. The test criteria allows for key aspects such as handling, braking and acceleration to all be under assessment, in a range of different circumstances – including in both the wet and dry.

In terms of wet handling, “right from the off, the pace-setting Pirelli gave great feel and good feedback” wrote evo, “so it’s a tyre that you quickly trust and exploit. The final test results prove that the P ZERO offers a perfect combination of great steering and grip, hand in hand with handling that is both secure yet rewarding of a comfortable and smooth ride, going on to rank top for dry handling and on the road route. In terms of safety, the P ZERO reached the highest score also in the wet braking test, trailing the second classified tire by more than one meter and the best score in wet circle test.

The evo tyre test was conducted at a bespoke tyre test facility in Italy, using an Audi S3 test car and it was carried out with the latest P ZERO in 18-inch size, selected from a range designed to equip some of the world’s best and most desirable supercars around the world. P ZERO is synonymous with sporting performance, characterised by advanced technology derived from Pirelli’s long experience in motorsport. P ZERO tyres are selected by more than 50% of the global prestige market, meaning that more than half of the most desirable cars in the world leave their factories on Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli’s engineers focussed on safety in the wet when designing the Cinturato P7 as well as short braking distances, a long tyre life, and low noise from the tyres. The P Zero was developed for the models featuring more performance and bigger wheels: tyres that make use of Pirelli’s extensive experience in motorsport and provide a high degree of control in both wet and dry conditions.

CINTURATO P7: SAFETY, COMFORT, AND RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The latest Pirelli Cinturato P7 delivers excellent performance in the dry and beats the previous Cinturato P7 in the wet in terms of aquaplaning and especially under braking, where it takes up to four fewer metres to stop from 100kph. The innovations introduced by Pirelli’s engineers also improve acoustic comfort, thanks to less cabin noise, as well ride comfort – with the tyre better able to absorb bumps in the road. Total tyre life goes up by six per cent, meaning that the tyres don’t have to be changed as often. Underlining the efficiency of the new tyre, rolling resistance goes down a class on average (-12%), reducing fuel consumption on the car by four per cent (as measured on the WLTP cycle) as well as carbon emissions. The innovations on the new-generation P7 start off with the tread pattern, benefitting from “mechanical intelligence”, which features silica and specific resins that increase grip as well as special polymers: synthetic elastic materials that are chemically modified to improve their interaction with the actual silica. This new compound, thanks to an improved distribution of the silica particles themselves and better interaction between them, means that the tyre can alter its behaviour depending on driving conditions and temperature, giving the driver a very wide working window of performance.

P ZERO: HIGH PERFORMANCE, SAFETY, AND A SPORTING SPIRIT

The P Zero designed for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers excellent handling in both the dry and the wet, perfect balance, precise response to steering inputs, reduced wet and dry braking distances, and decent protection against aquaplaning. P Zero is synonymous with sporting performance, characterised by advanced technology derived from Pirelli’s long experience in motorsport. P Zero tyres are selected by more than 50% of the global prestige market, meaning that more than half of the most desirable cars in the world leave their factories on Pirelli tyres.

A WIDE RANGE OF TYRES

There are more than 770 Pirelli tyre models, underlining the close technical collaboration between the two companies, with the latest chapter being the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The car – available with both rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive – benefits from a bespoke version of the Cinturato P7, launched last year, and P Zero: true to Pirelli’s ‘Perfect Fit’ philosophy. These tyres are designed to integrate perfectly with the car’s systems thanks to a perfect balance between the rigidity of the structure and tread pattern under different loads, ensuring safety as well as performance. For winter conditions, the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 is available: a tyre for the top end of the premium market that provides high levels of driving performance. In certain sizes, the P Zero is available with PNCS technology, which reduces the noise on the inside of the car from the interaction between the road surface and the tyre. The Cinturato P7 tyres for the new Mercedes-Benz C class will instead also be available with the Self-Supporting Run Flat option to mitigate punctures. This system guarantees safety without compromising enjoyment, by keeping the car stable even in the event of a puncture. Thanks to this system, cars can keep driving safely for 80 kilometres at a maximum speed of 80kph.

DIFFERENT RULES FOR EVERY COUNTRY

When travelling across national borders, it’s important to contact the authorities of each state to know precise information on local regulations, but it’s still useful to have a brief overview of how different European countries regulate driving in winter, both for safe travel and to avoid fines.

Austria: from 1 November to 15 April, winter tyres with M+S markings are mandatory with a tread depth of at least 4mm or ÖNORM V 5117/5119-approved chains can be used on the driven wheels in icy or snowy conditions.

Belgium: there is no requirement for winter tyres.

Bulgaria: from 15 November to 1 March, winter tyres with M+S and 3PMSF (three peak mountain snowflake with a stylised mountain logo) markings are mandatory or summer tyres with a tread depth of at least 4mm.

Croatia: from 15 November to 15 April it is obligatory to fit M+S winter tyres with a tread depth of at least 4mm – or to carry chains in case of snow.

Estonia: from 1 December to 1 March, M+S winter tyres with a tread depth of at least 3mm are mandatory or tyres can also be fitted with chains on snow-covered roads.

Finland: from 1 November to 31 March, M+S winter tyres with a tread depth of at least 3mm are mandatory with winter conditions.

France: in 42 Alpine departments, it’s compulsory to have tyres with M+S or 3PMSF markings (or have chains on board) from 1 November to 31 March.

Germany: in winter conditions (without reference to specific months of the year) it’s mandatory to fit tyres with 3PMSF markings or carry chains. Tyres with only M+S markings produced up to 2017 can be used until September 30, 2024.

Italy: from 15 November to 15 April, tyres with M+S markings are mandatory on certain roads – or snow chains must be carried as an alternative.

Lithuania: from 10 November to 1 April, tyres with M+S markings and at least 3mm of tread depth (or chains in case of snow) are required by law.

Luxembourg: winter tyres with M+S markings or snow chains (to be carried on board) are mandatory with snow or ice.

Netherlands: the use of winter tyres is not required and the use of snow chains is prohibited.

Portugal: winter tyres are not compulsory.

United Kingdom: the use of winter tyres is not mandatory and chains or spiked tyres are allowed only when they do not damage the road surface, in snowy or icy conditions only.

Czech Republic: from 1 November to 31 March, winter tyres with M+S markings and a tread depth of at least 4mm is mandatory in case of snow.

Romania: in snow, ice or winter conditions, winter tyres with M+S markings are mandatory. If roads are covered with snow or ice, chains can also be used.

Serbia: from 1 November to 1 April, M+S winter tyres with at least 4mm of tread depth are required by law outside of built-up areas. Snow chains can be carried as an alternative.

Slovakia: from 15 November to 31 March, winter tyres with M+S markings are required by law (with 3mm of upper tread).

Slovenia: from 15 November to 15 March, or whenever there is snow on the road, M+S or 3PMSF winter tyres are mandatory. Chains are allowed as an alternative in case of snow.

Spain: M+S winter tyres can be used on at least the driven wheels with snow on the road under request by authorities. Chains can be used wherever permitted always with a maximum speed of 50kph.

Sweden: winter tyres with 3PMSF markings are mandatory from 1 December to 31 March. M+S marked tyres can be used until 30 November 2024.

Switzerland: the use of winter tyres is recommended from October to April, while chains can only be used in case of snow or ice.

SO WHAT NEXT: WINTER OR ALL SEASON?

Is the best option an all-season tyre that stays on the car all year round, or a dedicated set of winter tyres? There are many options, but the right solution depends on how much distance the car covers and how it is used during the winter, where the driver lives, and, of course, the type of car itself. All these considerations come into play: all-season are a result of a precise balance able to function all year, but a specific winter tyre remains preferable for the most severe weather conditions. The most important thing is to ensure that there’s an M+S or 3PMSF marking on the sidewall that denotes the tyre is suitable for winter conditions: avoiding fines and guaranteeing safety even in winter.

WINTER FOR THE DYNAMIC DRIVER

Winter tyres are preferable for drivers who cover big distances during the winter and are looking for the best possible performance in all cold-weather conditions. Thanks to their softer compound, which performs strongly even when temperatures are very low, winter tyres guarantee excellent road holding, optimal traction and safe braking on any type of surface, even with low grip. The chemical characteristics of winter tyre compounds allow shorter braking distances on snow-covered roads, where braking gets better by over 50% compared to a summer tyre. The specific tread pattern of a winter tyre also contributes to performance: in particular thanks to the sipes, whose main purpose is to collect and retain the snow inside them, improving grip with the ‘snow on snow friction’ effect, which allows maximum mobility without using snow chains. On top that, the generously-sized grooves allow for rapid and effective water dispersal, eliminating the danger of aquaplaning and maximising safety.

Pirelli offers a complete range of winter tyres. For the most powerful cars, the P Zero Winter is available, while the new Cinturato Winter 2 is aimed at drivers of city, urban and crossover cars. The Winter Sottozero 3 is an original equipment tyre aimed at high-end premium cars, while the Scorpion Winter is available for the latest-generation SUVs and CUVs. Carrier Winter is for vans and light trucks.

ALL SEASON FOR THE EVERYDAY URBAN DRIVER

All season tyres have become the preferred choice for many motorists who live in cities with temperate climates away from mountainous regions, and who aren’t particularly looking for sporting performance. Thanks to is unique design and make-up, an All Season tyre represents a targeted balance capable of operating at both high and low temperatures, as well as on wet and dry asphalt, delivering versatile overall performance. This type of tyre doesn’t offer the ultimate performance of summer tyres in summer, or winter tyres in winter, but still represents an excellent compromise in a wide variety of situations.

Pirelli has an ample range of All Season tyres, covering every category of car. The new Cinturato All Season SF2 meets the needs of car owners with tyre sizes between 15 and 20 inches, who want a year-round solution mainly for urban areas. THE CINTURATO CN12 FOR THE 1971 LP500

Pirelli, which has worked with Lamborghini since 1963, remade the tyres used for the LP500 prototype, which wore unique Cinturato CN12 covers when it was first displayed at the Geneva Motor Show. This was the very first low profile tyre, already used by the legendary Miura with different measures. Pirelli developed a specific version of this tyre for the LP500, with a height to width ratio of 0.6: the lowest that had ever been seen at the time. The tyres themselves were in 245/60 R14 size at the front and 265/60 R14 size at the rear: exactly the same dimensions used for today’s reconstructed version. The tread pattern design is identical too, while the compound and structure use the latest modern technology to offer more safety than was available at the time.

The revival of the Countach LP500, making its debut at the famous Villa d’Este Concours, was carried out by Lamborghini’s heritage division, which put in more than 25,000 hours of work to bring the dream of one the marque’s most dedicated collectors to life. The Lamborghini Countach became an instant classic, launching a series of immediately recognisable design cues that would go on to characterise the cars from the 1970s to now.

THE P ZERO RANGE: HIGH PERFORMANCE TYRES FOR EVERY MODERN LAMBORGHINI

THE PAST AND THE FUTURE IN PIRELLI’S COLLEZIONE TYRES

MORE THAN 3.5 KILOMETRES OF HISTORY AT THE PIRELLI FOUNDATION

To reproduce the tyres showcased in the Pirelli Collezione, it was vital to have access to all the materials used in their development when they were brand new, from design to production. These documents relating to every Pirelli tyre are carefully stored at the Pirelli Foundation: the group’s historical archive. Within it can be found tens of thousands of documents relating to the development of every tyre throughout the last century, as well as the specification of the machinery used to make them, not to mention technical files specifying the size of the moulds for vulcanisation, the design of the tread pattern, and the original markings – with size, type of tyre and company logo – on the sidewall.

The Pirelli Foundation, created in 2008, maintains an archive that’s more than 3.5 kilometres long, covering the history of Pirelli from its inauguration in 1872 until today. The archive also contains all the visual elements used to tell the story such as photographs, sketches and posters, as well as audio and film recordings and corporate magazines. Since 1972, it has been protected by the national cultural heritage department. The Pirelli Foundation hosts several activities that highlight the company’s industrial heritage, including publications, exhibitions and conventions, as well as guided tours. These events involve thousands of people every year, and a key element is education, with courses aimed at schools of every level, all the way up to leading universities. The key aim is to raise awareness of Pirelli’s world even among the youngest students, bringing them closer to the company’s values and culture.

PIRELLI P ZERO AND P ZERO CORSA TYRES EQUIP THE 21ST CENTURY COUNTACH

The 2021 Lamborghini Countach is a hybrid supercar that puts out 814 horsepower and goes on to a top speed of 355kph, forming a fitting tribute to an iconic model name that celebrates its 50th birthday this year. Pirelli has equipped the new car with P Zero tyres in 255/30 R20 size at the front and 355/25 R 21 at the back, developed to enhance vehicle performance as well as safety, control and handling. The tyre structure and compound have been optimised to reach the best possible roadholding in all driving situations, plus high levels of traction and braking in the wet as well as the dry. The Pirelli P Zero was born as an ultra high-performance (UHP) tyre, which unites Pirelli’s motorsport know-how with an ongoing collaboration involving the world’s top car manufacturers. For drivers looking for even more performance on a race track, the P Zero Corsa is available as an option: tyres that transfer the best of motorsport technology into use for both road and track. A dual compound tread and asymmetric design delivers the correct balance to achieve high speeds on track as well as generating the necessary amount of grip and traction. On top of that, the P Zero Corsa offers strong resistance to the high thermodynamic stresses created by the cars that they are fitted to.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE COUNTACH, FROM THE P7 TO THE P ZERO CORSA

The Lamborghini Countach, born to be a revolutionary car that was even quicker and more technically advanced than the iconic Miura, became the archetypal 1970s sports car, as well as the forerunner to the modern generation of high performance supercars. In those days, Pirelli’s most sporting tyre was the Cinturato CN12, which equipped the Miura. This was the tyre that was the origin of low-profile rubber, which then led to the birth of the Pirelli P7, chosen as original equipment for the Countach LP 500 in 1971. Two years later the Countach LP 400 arrived. With just 152 examples produced up to 1977, this is the most sought-after version by collectors. The LP 400 gave way to the LP 400 S, with new low-profile Pirelli P7 tyres fitted to a new design of magnesium wheel. Afterwards came the Countach LP 5000 S from 1982 to 1985 and then the LP 5000 Quattrovalvole from 1985 to 1988. The Countach 25th anniversary edition made its debut in 1988 and was the first Lamborghini to use Pirelli P Zero tyres: the range of tyres designed for supercars all over the world, which still equips the most powerful cars today.

Tyres for the historical versions of the Lamborghini Countach are still available today as part of the Pirelli Collezione: a family of tyres dedicated to the most iconic cars built between 1950 and 1980, which maintain the original looks of period tyres matched to modern technology.

PIRELLI AND LAMBORGHINI: A LONG-STANDING PARTNERSHIP

The collaboration between Pirelli and Lamborghini dates back to 1963: the year in which Ferruccio Lamborghini asked Pirelli to equip the newly-created constructor’s first car. This was the 350 GTV, launched as a prototype at the Turin Motor Show the same year. It was the first step in a historic collaboration that lives on today, highlighting some of the most important moments in automotive history. The production version of the GTV was badged as the 350 GT and used a tyre from the Cinturato family with HS (High Speed) specification: developed to equip sports cars that were already capable of reaching the 240kph mark. Pirelli then made bespoke tyres for the Lamborghini LM002 – the Pirelli Scorpion – the 1990 Lamborghini Diablo, thanks to a specific Pirelli P Zero, as well as the 2001 Murciélago and 2003 Gallardo with a tailor-made P Zero Rosso.

To celebrate this collaboration that has lasted more than half a century, Lamborghini also created a very special version of the Aventador: the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Pirelli Edition. The Lamborghini range continues to expand right up to the present day, with Pirelli carrying on its mission to create dedicated tyres for the marque: from the Scorpion for the Urus SUV, to the P Zero and P Zero Corsa for the coupé, spyder and roadster models.

FSC-CERTIFIED PIRELLI TYRES ON DISPLAY FOR THE FIRST TIME

Milan, September 9, 2021 – The world’s leading carmakers at the 2021 International IAA Mobility Show in Munich have chosen Pirelli tyres for their most sustainable cars. Nearly one in three electric cars (29%) at the show and on the road in Munich use Pirelli P Zero or Scorpion tyres. With some of these tyres containing Elect technology, designed for cars with zero or low emissions, Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 tyres are also at the show on the BMW 320e hybrid and 3 Series models.

COMPLETING THE LOOK OF THE LATEST CAR MODELS

P Zero tyres with Elect markings are Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyres that combines Pirelli’s experience in motorsport with Elect; technology, chosen to equip cars such as the Porsche Taycan, Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, Polestar 1, BMW iX and the new Mercedes-Benz EQE, at the show in Munich. The P Zero Elect tyres are also fitted on the concept car Audi Grandsphere Concept and Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG; as well as the new Mercedes-Benz EQB and Ford Mustang Mach-E 4X.

The models from the Scorpion family – tyres that are designed for SUVs and crossovers – are also showcased on other new releases in Munich, such as the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, the Volvo XC90 plug-in Hybrid and the Jaguar EV400 AWD, as well as the Mercedes-Benz EQCc 400 4matic AMG Line.

ELECT: MORE RANGE, QUIET, AND GRIP

Pirelli Elect tyres are characterised by a package of specific technologies for electric and plug-in hybrid cars: low rolling resistance to increase range, decreased road noise to improve comfort, immediate grip to deal with instant torque, and the right structure to support the weight of a battery-powered vehicle. These have been developed by Pirelli together with the world’s leading carmakers to meet the specialised technical demands of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles according to Pirelli’s ‘perfect fit’ philosophy, with a specific compound, structure and tread pattern design for each car.

THE WORLD’S FIRST SET OF FSC-CERTIFIED TYRES

The world’s first Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified tyres on show for the first time, the Pirelli P Zero tyres which contain FSC-certified* natural rubber and rayon are fitted on new BMW iX5 Hydrogen and BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-In Hybrid. FSC forest management certification confirms that plantations are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. The complex FSC chain of custody certification process verifies that FSC-certified material has been identified and separated from non-certified material as it makes its way along the supply chain, from the plantations to the tyre manufacturer

Milan, 31 August 2021 – The Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R has set a fresh record with the new Audi RS 3 at the legendary Nurburgring circuit in Germany, showcasing the capabilities of Pirelli’s most sporting street tyre. The Audi set a new record of 7m40.748s on the 20.8-kilometre circuit, beating the previous record for compact cars by 4.64 seconds, which was established back in 2019.

This record was achieved thanks also to the performance of the Trofeo R tyres, in 265/30Z R19 size at the front and 245/35Z R19 at the back. The larger tyres at the front are a particular factor in enhancing the driving experience to deliver a sportier feel.

TAILOR MADE P ZERO TROFEO R TYRES FOR ROAD AND TRACK

Together with their counterparts from Audi, Pirelli’s engineers developed a bespoke version of the P Zero Trofeo R for this latest RS 3: track tyres also homologated for road use, which are derived from Pirelli’s experience in premier global motorsport championships. This tyre uses the latest technology, especially when it comes to compound, structure, and tread pattern, combining the best possible performance on the road as well as the track. For example, the tread pattern design is created to favour stability on the straights as well as shortening braking distances and improving lateral grip through corners. These tyres are made at Pirelli’s Izmit factory in Turkey, a facility that also produces motorsport tyres for all the different motorsport championships that Pirelli is involved in, using exactly the same technology and equipment that is utilised to make state-of-the-art motorsport tyres.

P ZERO: EVERYDAY PERFORMANCE ALONGSIDE RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

An alternative to the P Zero Trofeo R tyre is the famous P Zero, which is designed for everyday use for drivers less inclined towards track days. This tyre combines performance and comfort without compromising speed, sportiness and control. As well as complementing the sporting nature of the Audi RS 3, P Zero is also geared towards sustainability: the structure and materials of these tyres have been designed to optimise rolling resistance, earning it an “A” rating on the European tyre label, with reduced fuel consumption and consequent benefits for the environment. The development of this tyre also made use of Pirelli’s virtual design and simulation technology, reducing development time in order to react more quickly to Audi’s requirements and offering other benefits in terms of sustainability, with fewer physical prototypes needed. These bespoke tyres carry a specific AO marking on the sidewall, denoting that they have been made to measure for Audi in line with Pirelli’s ‘perfect fit’ strategy.

Milan, August 18 2021 – Pirelli P Zero Slick tyres have been selected by Dallara to equip the exclusive Stradale EXP, a version of the road-going Stradale designed for track use with 500 hp, 720 Nm of torque and weighing only 890 kg. Pirelli engineers faced a difficult challenge in the development of these dedicated slick tyres, which are required to withstand impressive loads. The P Zero tyres developed especially for the Stradale EXP have allowed Dallara to achieve its goal of lapping the Mugello circuit in less than one minute and 46 seconds: a goal exceeded when the car and its Pirelli tyres recorded a lap of 1m45.837s.

The Dallara Stradale EXP is an evolution of the Stradale intended to provide an amateur experience for everyone from the road to the track, allowing track day participants to have fun without having to submit to the homologation constraints of road cars. The car’s debut took place at the Pirelli P Zero Experience in Mugello, one of the most exclusive events dedicated to gentleman drivers who want to bring their car to the track and test the highest-performing models from those manufacturers for which Pirelli produces tailor-made tyres.

The development of the tyres for the Stradale EXP presented several technical challenges for the Pirelli engineers. In its natural habitat on the track, the car generates significant dynamic loads, comparable to those experienced with a GT3 racing car. The solution was sought in an accurate development of structures and materials, which led to the use of a softer compound (medium) for the front axle and a stiffer one (harder) for the rear to ensure a good dynamic balance of the car and provide the right balance between performance, grip and resistance to different temperatures, thanks to the introduction of new generation polymers. This explains the different nomenclature between the DMA front tires and DHA rear tires. Before the official debut at the Pirelli P Zero Experience, the Stradale EXP with P Zero Slick tyres travelled over 9,000 km on various tracks, including Barcelona, Misano and Vallelunga, to be tested in a variety of conditions representative of different circuits.

THE NEW TYRE FOR THE AMERICAN ELECTRIC SEDAN FEATURES ELECT AND PNCS TECHNOLOGIES, AS WELL AS THE NEW ‘HL’ MARKING

Milan, 15 July 2021 – Pirelli presents its very first high load index tyre: a new type of tyre dedicated primarily to electric or hybrid cars and SUVs. Made to support the weight of new vehicles equipped with batteries, the tyre is perfect for heavier vehicles, such as electric cars. It is designed to provide low rolling resistance as well as a high level of driving comfort.

The new tyre features the HL (high load) marking on the sidewall as an indication of its capabilities and is able to support 20% more weight compared to a standard tyre and 6-9% more weight than an extra load XL tyre of the same size.

LUCID AIR WITH THE P ZERO HL FEATURING ELECT AND PNCS TECHNOLOGY

The Lucid Air will be the very first car to use the new Pirelli HL tyres. The Pirelli P ZERO for this model will be available in the following sizes: HL 245/35R21 99 Y XL on the front axle and HL 265/ 35R21 103 Y XL on the rear axle, specifically designed for the new luxury electric sedan produced and sold later this year in the United States of America. In accordance with Pirelli's ‘Perfect Fit’ strategy, the P ZERO tyres for the Lucid Air have been jointly developed with the car manufacturer, to fully meet the required performance standards. To identify the specific design for the American manufacturer, these tyres will be marked ‘LM1’ on the sidewalls.

These bespoke P ZEROs will also benefit from Pirelli Elect and PNCS technologies. Pirelli Elect offers low rolling resistance to increase range, reduced rolling noise to maximise comfort, and a compound engineered for grip to respond to the instant torque demands of the electric transmission, as well as a structure capable of supporting the weight of the battery pack. To further increase interior comfort, PNCS technology which consists of a special sound-absorbing material placed within the tyre, helps deaden air vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted to the inside of the vehicle. The benefits of this system can be felt both inside and outside the car.
