Pirelli Cyber Fleet passes all its dynamic tests the product will be on sale in autumn

Pirelli’s new remote system for tyre fleet management improves safety and can offer fuel savings of up to 1000 Euros per year on each vehicle product is being tested on 13 heavy goods vehicles. More than 20,000 kilometres have been covered in testing so far The electronic sensor allows the tyre to ‘talk’ to the driver and fleet manager in real time, indicating pressure and temperature Pirelli has completed the first testing phase of Cyber Fleet: the system that transmits tyre data in real time to drivers and fleet managers using electronic sensors and telemetry. The results of these tests were exclusively revealed at the Essen tyre show, where Pirelli is present from 5-8 June. Cyber Fleet optimises fleet running costs, as it allows fuel savings to be made (because correct tyre pressures reduce rolling resistance) and also saves on staff costs when it comes to maintaining tyres and checking pressures. At the same time, it guarantees an even level of wear on the tyres, which leads to increased durability. In particular, the tests carried out so far have revealed that Cyber Fleet allows a fuel saving that can be up to 1000 Euros per year for each vehicle. It is also possible to calculate the efficiency of each single vehicle – thanks to the data provided by software partner Telogis – and identify any anomalies in tyre pressure, allowing the return on investment for installing the system to be easily calculated. Tests have shown that the investment required to buy Cyber Fleet will be returned completely within just six months of use, not to mention the added safety advantages that the system brings. The tests, which were carried out using a large private municipal services fleet that transports both goods and people, got underway in April and are still running. The tests involve 13 heavy goods vehicles, including three coaches, three buses, three industrial transporters, two dustcarts and two trucks. These vehicles, running on Pirelli tyres equipped with sensors, have covered more than 20,000 kilometres so far, accumulating data that can be used for tyre management. On Pirelli’s stand at the show, it is possible to connect with those vehicles in real time to monitor tyre temperature and pressure, as well as obtain data about their journeys, thanks to sophisticated mapping software. This reveals the kilometres run and the performance of the tyres. As was announced at Pirelli’s Truck Safety Day in January, the sensor will be available on the market by the end of 2012. How the Cyber Fleet works. Together with Schrader Electronics, the world leader in onboard tyre pressure monitoring technology, Pirelli’s research and development division has created an electronic sensor that is capable of monitoring every important tyre parameter. This sensor, known as TMS (Tyre Mounted Sensor) is mounted on the inside of the tyre in order to identify it and collect all data relative to pressure and temperature. The system transmits data from the sensor in real time to both the driver and fleet manager. The whole fleet is therefore able to anticipate performance and any changes that need to be made, guaranteeing optimal safety for each vehicle. Responsibility for monitoring the data is not only down to the driver but also the fleet manager, who can ensure the safety of his entire fleet remotely. Thanks to Cyber Fleet, users have the opportunities to check that the tyre pressures are constantly correct – which is vital to optimise fuel consumption and maximise each tyre’s duration. This also means that tyre wear checks can be planned for when they are needed, with the distance covered by each tyre carefully recorded – so that safety is improved. Cyber Fleet can be used in two ways: Static solution: the sensor memorizes data relative to tyre pressure and temperature, which can be downloaded on a handheld receiver. Dynamic solution: Cyber Fleet can be integrated with the majority of telemetry systems currently available on the market and allows real time data transmission of all the relevant parameters to the fleet manager, who can save them into a database to compile reports and statistics. Through this connectivity, Cyber Fleet allows vehicles to be tracked, and mileage monitored, in the same way as a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system. The system is also capable of integrating tyre data into existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, supplying them regularly in a fully automatic and secure process. Cyber Fleet is the latest innovation from Pirelli to promote sustainable mobility. The correct tyre pressure, ensured with the help of the Cyber Fleet system, allows driving precision, reliability while braking and cornering, and lower operating costs: reducing fuel consumption and extending tyre life. In particular, through monitoring tyre pressures, Cyber Fleet helps maintain optimal levels of rolling resistance, in accordance with the data displayed on the new European tyre label that will be compulsory from 1 November. In this way, the tyre’s original rating will always be maintained. In Essen Pirelli reveals for the first time the scores on the labels, which as well as rolling resistance also grade noise and wet braking. These ratings confirm the quality of Pirelli’s ecological truck tyres: Super Single ST:01 scores ‘A’ in wet braking for instance, while FH:01 scores ‘B’ in rolling resistance. By developing new tyres for vehicles designed to transport goods and people, Pirelli has made full use of all the latest technology. This guarantees the user the best possible performance, not just in terms of rolling resistance and wet grip, but also in terms of mileage and ‘retreadability’: fundamental parameters for heavy goods vehicles that are not covered by the label. At the Essen show, Pirelli is also launching a new homepage for the truck section on its company website. This highlights the products from the 01 Series, the forthcoming European tyre label, and a new section on fleet services.

Cyber Fleet sees Pirelli extend to the haulage sector the Cyber Tyre technology designed for car tyre safety. The presentation took place at Truck Safety Day, a heavy goods vehicle road safety event held in Livigno where a snow-covered track was used to test the new Pirelli 01 Series winter tyre. Cyber Fleet is the latest in a line of innovative sustainable mobility solutions developed by Pirelli researchers. The new system is designed to provide continuous tyre monitoring, detecting irregularities and ensuring proper maintenance. Tyre quality, maintenance and correct use are essential to road safety: having the correct tyre pressure at all times ensures steering precision and confident braking and cornering, whilst guaranteeing lower running costs by cutting fuel consumption and extending the tyre lifespan. How Cyber Fleet works. Pirelli Research & Development has developed - in partnership with Schrader Electronics, world leader in on-board tyre pressure monitoring technology - an electronic sensor capable of ascertaining the condition of the tyre whilst on the move. The sensor, called TMS (Tyre Mounted Sensor), is fitted to the internal surface of the tyre in order to collect all data regarding the tyre pressure, temperature and identification. The system transmits the data gathered by the sensor simultaneously to the truck driver and fleet manager. The fleet is therefore able to carry out diagnostic and repair procedures, thus guaranteeing maximum safety for each heavy vehicle. The process of interpreting the data is not left solely in the hands of the truck driver, but also the fleet manager who handles the safety of the entire fleet from a remote position. Cyber Fleet will enable the manager to check that the tyres are kept at optimum pressure, such condition being essential for optimising fuel consumption and extending tyre lifespan to the maximum, whilst being aware of the mileage of each tyre, he can also schedule tread wear inspections with tangible benefits as far as safety is concerned. Testing of Cyber Fleet by European and South American fleets will begin in February 2012 ready for marketing this coming September. Comparative testing of Winter and Summer tyres. Safety took centre stage at Truck Safety Day not only with Cyber Fleet, but also 01 Series winter tyres, developed by Pirelli to guarantee maximum performance and safety over medium and long distances on wet, snowy or icy surfaces with temperatures below 4 °C. Tests on the snow highlighted the difference in performance of tyres specially developed for winter use compared to summer tyres. Generous deep siping and the optimised tread block/groove pattern provide excellent “snow-on-snow” grip, guaranteeing reduced braking distances and maximum traction on slippery and snow-covered surfaces (see Winter data sheet). Truck Safety Day confirms Pirelli’s commitment to all aspects of road safety. Last year, the Group’s Truck Division ran an on-line competition open to the views and suggestions of truck drivers on topical road safety issues. Pirelli’s actions are based on the principles of the European Road Safety Charter, of which the Group is a signatory, and aim to increase the knowledge of truck drivers on this subject and promote awareness campaigns as to the importance of using suitable tyres and their correct maintenance for the purposes of road safety.

Pirelli Truck, a Century of Transport

2011 is an important year for the Pirelli Truck business unit. It is the year in which it celebrates its centenary of truck tyre manufacturing innovation. And on 15^th and 16^th September in Izmit in Turkey it got the official celebrations underway when unveiling new products from the 01 Series before numerous international dealers and journalists. Guests were treated to a photographic exhibition that takes a look at the development of Pirelli tyres from the beginning of the last century right up until today. Specialising not only in tyres for trucks, but also for cars and motorsport, the manufacturing works in Izmit, Turkey has become the natural stage for the anniversary. The exhibition is a sort of journey through time that begins with pictures of haulage vehicles from the early twentieth century: a period of fundamental importance because this is when iron tread bands were replaced by solid rubber tyres. The exhibition continues on through to the present day illustrating truck tyre technology, innovation and development. The anniversary holds great significance for Pirelli because it was 1911 that marked a turning point: the Pirelli car tyre price list (dated 20^th September 1911) specifies the size “1000 x 150 millimetres”, the smallest possible in order to class “Ercole” as a truck tyre. Truck-tyre technology development and manufacturing underwent a drastic change during the Twenties. This was when cord fabric replaced the antiquated square-woven fabric and the straight-side fixing system superseded the beaded edge one. The Sixties represented another milestone for Pirelli with the implementation of radial tyres on heavy vehicles as can be seen in many of the photos on display. The exhibition also tells the story of the work of Pirelli employees in the finishing and vulcanisation departments. But it is from the Eighties up until the present time that the Pirelli truck sector has consolidated its international presence by opening important manufacturing sites in Brazil and Egypt and upgrading the Izmit factory. 01 Series, Three New Lines For Pirelli Truck

To mark the centenary of commercial vehicle tyre manufacturing innovation, Pirelli unveils three new lines to complete the 01 Series. The W:01, H:01 and G:01 models are respectively designed for use in critical winter conditions, long distance haulage and construction machinery. Developed to meet the requirements of the trade as far as safety, environmental sustainability, wear and low running costs are concerned, the latest additions to the 01 Series were launched in Izmit, in Turkey. The W:01 line guarantees maximum performance on wet, snowy or icy surfaces and temperatures below 4° centigrade. On the other hand, low rolling resistance, acoustic comfort and high mileage are the main characteristics of H:01 tyres designed for long-haul transport vehicles on motorways or arterial roads. Finally, for construction vehicles used both on-the-road and on-site, Pirelli has designed G:01 tyres, these being particularly tear-resistant and able to guarantee high mileage. Like all 01 Series tyres, the manufacturing process of the three new lines also employs latest-generation SATT^TM(Spiral Advanced Technology for Truck^TM) technology allowing high standards of tyre life, retreadability, even wear, comfort and steering precision to be achieved. Furthermore, compounds and tread patterns are designed and optimised according to the performance required in the various applications. In all 01 Series lines, a summary of performance benefits is provided by the ECOIMPACT symbols on the sidewall.

Pirelli Launches the R01, the Eco-Friendly Regional Tyre

Pirelli Tyre strengthens its commitment to the truck sector and, from Bologna, launches the R:01 Series onto the European market. This is a tyre for industrial vehicles in the regional sector. It has been developed by Pirelli's research centres to meet the requirements of professional operators in terms of mileage yield, reduced consumption, retreading potential and respect for the environment. Pirelli Tyre also presented the H88 Amaranto and G88 series to the international press, developed for long distance transport and for construction vehicles respectively. And the latest TS:01 series for lorries was announced. Four products which have a benefit in common: extremely low cost; and which extend the Pirelli range designed for transport professionals in order to cover 80% of the European market in those sectors with greater growth trends. The Italian group also presented a new package of services to support operators: the Pirelli Retreading System, the renovated Pirelli system to retread tyres; CQ24 International for road assistance; and Credit Tyre, the financing system for fleets and retailers. The growing specialization of the Italian group in the transport sector has also spread to training through the magazine Truck, a new free Pirelli house organ which will be added to courses organised by the Group to continuously update and inform. R:01 SERIES, THE ENVIRONMENT'S REGIONAL FRIEND. First of the innovative 01 Series (available in the FR:01 version for the directional axis and TR:01 for the motor axis), these are tyres developed for regional transport. Completely innovative in their structure, their profile and the materials used, they adopt the SATT patented process, the most advanced technology for producing truck tyres. The main features of the R:01 Series, identifiable by the Ecoimpact icons on the side of the tyre, are: high Mileage which places R:01 at the top of its regional category with an average yield value 30% higher than the previous product; high retreading value, thanks to the new belt structure which, together with the SATT technology, improves the performance levels in terms of mileage during the first life of the tyre and optimises retreading during subsequent stages; reduced rolling resistance, with benefits leading to reduced fuelling and harmful emissions and to annual fuel savings estimated at around 3%; low noise level, and use of ecological materials, without use of highly aromatic oils (HAOF), two specifications which already meet European laws which come into effect in 2010 and 2012. R:01 is the start of a technological evolution to include new products in the near future and representing the most advanced tyre in Pirelli's truck range renovation process. Over the last few months, in fact, G88 and H88, for the sectors G-On/Off and H-highway respectively have been successfully launched and are characterised by their low cost (high mileage, high retreading value, fuel reduction). In September, the Pirelli range will be updated with the new ST01, a tyre designed for lorries, developed to maximise both duration of mileage yield and retreading, and to reduce fuelling. SERVICES: RETREADING, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TRAINING. Pirelli Tyre's specialisation in the truck sector and closeness to transport professionals is clear not only in the renewed range of products but also in the innovative integrated services. Firstly, the Pirelli Retreading System is based on three fundamental aspects: the quality of the tyre's design and production, in order to optimise the retreading of the carcass; a network of Pirelli certified retreaders to extend the quality of the first life and to get more from subsequent retreads; the renewed range of Novateck segments, dedicated trademark of the Milan based Company which, through original designs, covers the great majority of vehicle requirements for various purposes. The Pirelli retreading system emphasises the advantages of the new generation carcass quality to reduce mileage costs, lower the overall tyre running costs and reduce environmental impact. Pirelli Tyre: Francesco Gori re-elected President of the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturer's Association

Environmental protection, road safety and increased competitiveness are the guidelines of the three-year mandate Francesco Gori, CEO and Managing Director of Pirelli Tyre, has been re-elected President of ETRMA, the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association. Mr. Gori will serve his second consecutive three-year term and will remain in office until 2011. The association elected as its Vice President Patrick Lepercq, Vice-President, Public Affairs, of Michelin. "Environmental protection, road safety and increased competitiveness are the priorities of the Association," said Mr. Gori. "The decision for continuity emphasizes the Association's determination to strengthen the commitment of our industry to the key themes we focused on in the previous mandate, with good results. We foresee important challenges such as the evolution of markets and of the European regulatory scenario, which will transform our industry in coming years. In this scenario, ETRMA plans to make a fundamental contribution to positive growth of the European mobility industry." ETRMA (European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association) represents 4.200 companies from the tyre and rubber industry (ranging from pharmaceutical to baby care), with turnover exceeding €49 billion and, 360,000 people employed.

Pirelli Acquires Truck Tyre Company In Egypt

Cairo / Milan, June 14, 1999 - It is the largest industrial truck tyre activity in the Mediterranean area.
Pirelli Tyres has today signed an agreement with the Egyptian government to purchase the majority stake in the Alexandria Tire Company. According to the agreement, signed this morning in Cairo by representatives of the company and by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources of Egypt, Pirelli Tyres, which already held 11% of Alexandria Tire, will purchase another 47% of the company from the government for an investment of about US $50 million, bringing the holding to 58%; moreover, the acquisition of a further 8% of the company is foreseen in the brief term. The rest of the company is held by local institutional and private investors.

The Alexandria Tire Company produces all-steel radial truck tyres. With around 700 employees and a current productive capacity of roughly 330,000 pieces per year, the Alexandria factory is the largest industrial plant for the production of heavy vehicle tyres in the North Africa and Middle East area. The factory has been operating for about three years using technologies and know-how of Pirelli, which has also provided specialized machinery, the product design and plant engineering.

Pirelli will invest in the company over US $90 million in the next 4 years in order to increase its production capacity. Alexandria Tire will contribute to integrate the Pirelli European production with high quality products; moreover, the company, which is already the market leader in Egypt, thanks to Pirelli's expansion plans, will acquire significant market shares in other countries in the Mediterranean area.

" This new initiative by Pirelli" , stated Giovanni Ferrario, General Manager of Pirelli Tyres, " represents not only a new important investment to further strengthen our presence in the Middle East and North Africa, but reconfirms our strategy for growth in the truck tyres sector. This initiative emphasizes our commitment in Egypt and our confidence in a country characterized by strong dynamism and important opportunities for growth" .

The Alexandria Tire Company factory is situated in Amreya, Alexandria's industrial zone, and in terms of productive volumes, factory technologies and level of automation guarantees levels of technological excellence in line with the standards of the Pirelli industrial units. The factory exclusively produces all-steel radial truck tyres featuring last generation technologies.
