It aims at jointly creating new software-based solutions and driving functions thanks to sensors integrated into tyres, also known as in-tyre sensors. For drivers, this means greater safety, comfort, and sustainability, as well as improved driving dynamics. Bosch and Pirelli share the vision of working long term and have the intention to explore together enhanced tyre signal computing logic as potential input for enhanced vehicle dynamic controllers.

Pirelli Cyber Tyre is the world's first system based on tyres with integrated sensors that collect data and transmit it to the vehicle to be processed in real time. Bosch has already developed an ESP application specifically adapted to Pirelli tyres in an initial joint project with the hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili. The “Pirelli Cyber Tyre” technology on the Pagani Utopia Roadster transmits key tyre information to the ESP control unit. This enables optimal use of the individual properties and performance of the tyres, providing enhanced greatest safety and tailored driving conditions.

As a global supplier of technology and services, Bosch contributes its system-level hardware and software expertise to the development cooperation. Bosch is also a leader in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor technology and develops and manufactures tyre pressure sensors using the "Bluetooth Low Energy" (BLE) standard. By merging this expertise with Pirelli's in-tyre devices technologies – both hardware and software, algorithms, and tyre modeling, it will be possible to collect, process, and transmit real-time tyre data to provide parameters for the vehicle's electronic control system, using BLE with very low power consumption. Pirelli and Bosch now aim to exploit Bosch MEMS technology for in-tyre applications.

Press photos and infocharts are available on the Bosch Media Service at www.bosch-press.com

About Bosch

Mobility is the largest Bosch Group business sector. A new P Zero Corsa System, dedicated to the Ferrari Enzo, joins the Pirelli Collezione range, the line of tyres that equips both the most iconic 'oldtimer' and 'youngtimer' models. The tyres for the “Enzo” enrich the Pirelli catalogue for Ferrari Classic, adding two new P Zero tyres to the two already available for the Ferrari F40 and F50: two other historic supercars from Maranello.

P ZERO CORSA SYSTEM FOR THE FERRARI ENZO

For the Ferrari Enzo, the extreme sports car that dates from 2002, Pirelli has created a new P Zero Corsa System in 245/35 R19 size for the front and 345/35 R19 size for the rear. Like all tyres in the Collezione range, this product has an identical appearance to the original but is made with modern materials and technologies. Designed in the early 2000s to be the sportiest of the road range, it has a specific structure that gives it maximum stability at high speeds and when cornering, allowing it to also be used on the track. The two different tread designs, directional for the front and asymmetric for the rear, also reduce the phenomenon of aquaplaning. The new tyre was tested using Ferrari test drivers, who rediscovered the same sporty character of the time, now combined with greater safety and reliability thanks to the use of the most up-to-date compounds.

The P Zero Corsa System tyres from the Collezione range are also available, in 245/35 R18 size for the front and 335/30 R18 at the rear for the Ferrari F50, described at the time as the road car closest to a Formula 1 racer that Maranello had ever built.

P ZERO FOR THE FERRARI F40

The ancestor of the F50 and the Enzo was the Ferrari F40, the first mass-produced car to use Pirelli P Zero as original equipment in 1987. Developed specifically for the car, this tyre brought in some important innovations: a rim size of 17 inches, unprecedented for a road car, different sizes on front and rear and technology dedicated to a car with a maximum speed of over 300kph. Now a version of the P Zero dedicated to the F40 is available in the Pirelli Collezione range in 245/40 R17 size for the front and 335/35 R17 at the rear. Among the main innovations of this version is the lettering on the side of the tyre which recalls the original script.

PIRELLI P ZERO: PERFORMANCE, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

From the Ferrari F40 to the latest generation supercars, the P Zero range has been a constant. It tells a story of innovation and technology that is linked to the most prestigious and extreme cars of the last four decades and to motorsport, starting with Formula 1: an open-air technology transfer laboratory from track to road. Over time, the range has evolved according to the needs of the automotive market, which has become increasingly interested in performance, safety, and sustainability: now including electric mobility. Pirelli's Elect marking, denoting tyres made specifically for electrified cars, made its debut on a P Zero in 2019.

The family has recently been renewed with three new models presented at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed: the P Zero E, P Zero R and P Zero Trofeo RS. All of these tyres were developed with Pirelli's "Eco-Safety Design" approach: a methodology that uses innovative materials as well as tools that include virtualisation, derived from the company's experience in motorsport.

Published on: 8 May 2024, 17:42 CET

news,Tyre,Collezione,P Zero,Tyres

Starting from this year, all the tyres used in the FIA Formula One World Championship™ will be marked with the FSC logo. This certifies that all the natural rubber2 within the tyre complies with stringent environmental and social criteria required by the FSC, the world-leading non-governmental organisation for sustainable forestry.

This certification, announced on October 10 last year when Pirelli renewed its agreement as the Global Tyre Partner of Formula 1® until at least 2027, will apply to all the tyres used on track, throughout the season, including pre-season testing. The FSC-certified tyres have been introduced following an intense development programme that began in 2022, which showed clear results in terms of both reliability and performance.

The first free practice sessions at the FORMULA 1 GULF AIR BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX 2024 today hosted the debut of these certified tyres at a Grand Prix™ event. This marks a significant step, reflecting Pirelli’s commitment to delivering increasingly sustainable performance and solutions even within the special environment of motorsport, starting with its greatest technological and competitive expression, Formula 1®.

Pirelli has been confirmed as one of the global leaders in the fight against climate change for the sixth consecutive year with a place in the 2023 Climate A list from the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), an international no-profit organisation that researches and promotes environmental information. Pirelli was also the first tyre manufacturer to be awarded a three-star rating on the FIA’s Environmental Accreditation Programme.

Together with the FIA and Formula 1®, the Italian firm has underlined its position in the front line of research and development into new technology, both on the technical and sporting side, to support the work that has already been done in reducing CO2 emissions throughout the entire life cycle of a Formula 1 tyre. FSC certification joins a number of initiatives already put in place for motorsport by Pirelli in recent years:

all the tyres that Pirelli brings to the track during a Grand Prix<sup>™</sup> weekend – used in F1<sup>®</sup>, F2<sup>™</sup>, F3<sup>™</sup> and F1 Academy<sup>™</sup> – will be transformed into secondary raw materials after use, for multiple circular uses;

the electrical energy used to make F1<sup>®</sup>, F2<sup>™</sup>, F3<sup>™</sup> and F1 Academy<sup>™</sup> tyres comes exclusively from 100% renewable certified sources;

the use of ‘virtual’ design technology for all tyres not only considerably reduces development time, but above all the number of physical prototypes needed, cutting down on materials used;

the elimination of tyre warmers in Formula 1 for full wet covers, pioneered in Monaco last year, reduces the use of electrical energy;

more streamlined logistics, with sea freight now the preferred method of transport over air freight, cuts down on logistics emissions.

Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli Executive Vice President Motorsport, Sustainability and Future Mobility:
"The debut of our FSC-certified tyres in the world of motorsport represents a significant moment in Pirelli’s sustainability journey. This initiative shows that performance and sustainability can co-exist side by side, and the FSC is ready to support companies at a global level to follow this example.”

What is FSC certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) – a non-profit organization governed by environmental, social, and economic perspectives equally – covers more than 150 million hectares of certified forests and is the global benchmark for sustainable forestry. FSC’s strict forest management standards require that forests are managed to preserve biological diversity, while benefitting local workers and communities in way that is economically beneficial for them. The robust FSC certification process ensures that all certified material is separated from non-certified material throughout the supply chain, from plantation to tyre manufacturer.

Pirelli’s natural rubber supply chain
FSC certification of the natural rubber from certified plantations used by Pirelli to make tyres for the FIA Formula One World Championship is the latest step in the company’s long-running programme to sustainably manage the natural rubber supply chain. For us the goal was to confirm the good impressions seen at the beginning of September on the Montmelò circuit. On that occasion, as it was a private test, no official times were provided, whereas today it was possible to make a direct comparison with the times of the weekend just gone, in similar weather conditions and temperatures. Achieving the all-time lap records ever for this track in the respective championships, in the case of Moto3 even improving it by a second, is certainly clear and easily quantifiable proof of the excellent performance that our tyres are able to guarantee. Some riders ran more laps than the race distance using the same set of tyres, even if not consecutive, with limited drop and good wear. All the compounds performed well, clearly the softer ones are generally those that allowed the riders to achieve their best times. We know that the tests, although representative, are never like a race weekend and that each track makes history in its own right but we can say that the conditions for doing a good job next season are all there."

Moto2™

COMBINED

1) 21 Alonso LOPEZ (Beta Tools SpeedUp - BOSCOSCURO) 1’33.061 – Lap 24/26 Session 1 - ALL TIME LAP RECORD
2)     44 Aron CANET (Fantic Racing - KALEX) 1’33.074 - Lap 24/25 Session 1
3)     54 Fermín ALDEGUER (Beta Tools SpeedUp - BOSCOSCURO) 1’33.151 - Lap 27/27 Session 2

SESSION 1

1)     21 Alonso LOPEZ (Beta Tools SpeedUp - BOSCOSCURO) 1’33.061 - Lap 24/26
2)     44 Aron CANET (Fantic Racing - KALEX) 1’33.074 - Lap 24/25
3)     54 Fermín ALDEGUER (Beta Tools Speed Up - BOSCOSCURO) 1’33.456 - Lap 22/22

SESSION 2

1)     44 Aron CANET (Fantic Racing - KALEX) 1’33.146 - Lap 21/22
2)     54 Fermín ALDEGUER (Beta Tools SpeedUp - BOSCOSCURO) 1’33.151 - Lap 27/27
3) 14 Tony ARBOLINO (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team - KALEX) 1’33.383 – Lap 23/23

SESSION 3

1)     18 Manuel GONZALEZ (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™ - KALEX) 1’33.270 – Lap 26/27
2)     75 Albert ARENAS (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™ - KALEX) 1’33.302 - Lap 11/23
3)     44 Aron CANET (Fantic Racing - KALEX) 1’33.350 - Lap 18/22

Moto3™

COMBINED

1)     96 Daniel HOLGADO (Red Bull KTM Tech3) 1’37.300 - Lap 13/17 Session 2 - ALL TIME LAP RECORD
2)     99 José Antonio RUEDA (Red Bull KTM Ajo - KTM) 1’37.683 - Lap 15/17 Session 3
3)     80 David ALONSO (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team - GASGAS) 1’37.975 - Lap 14/15 Session 2

SESSION 1

1)     96 Daniel HOLGADO (Red Bull KTM Tech3 - KTM) 1’38.239 - Lap 18/19
2) 99 José Antonio RUEDA (Red Bull KTM Ajo - KTM) 1’38.572 - Lap 19/21
3)     31 Adrian FERNANDEZ (Leopard Racing - HONDA) 1’38.649 - Lap 24/29

SESSION 2

1)     96 Daniel HOLGADO (Red Bull KTM Tech3 - KTM) 1’37.300 - Lap 13/17
2)     80 David ALONSO (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team - GASGAS) 1’37.975 - Lap 14/15
3)     31 Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing - HONDA) 1’38.133 - Lap 27/29

SESSION 3

1) 99 José Antonio RUEDA (Red Bull KTM Ajo - KTM) 1’37.683 - Lap 15/17
2)     80 David ALONSO (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team - GASGAS) 1’38.208 - Lap 12/15
3) 36 Angel PIQUERAS (Leopard Racing) 1’38.291 – Lap 20/25

Moto,Motorsport,Tyres

Pirelli will exclusively bring a splash of colour to the race track on the Ferrari Challenge. The championship’s safety car will use the P Zero Color Edition, showcasing different colours for each round. To start off with, yellow was chosen for the Spa-Francorchamps round in Belgium: the central colour of the Belgian flag.

The shades selected for the Pirelli P Zero tyres fitted to the Ferrari 488 GTB safety car on some of the world’s most legendary tracks reflect not only local colours, but also tradition. It will be red for Misano in Italy, the heartland of motorsport, blue for Brno in the Czech Republic (as seen on the national flag) while in Barcelona the colour will be gold, again reflecting national colours. For the world finals in Monza from November 1-4 the colours are yet to be chosen. Pirelli’s social media followers will instead be able to select the colour for the all-important closing round of the championship at the ‘temple of speed’

The Color Edition is a Pirelli innovation with no equal, consisting of P Zero tyres that subvert the idea that tyres have to be by nature round and black. It’s an option reserved for 19-inch sizes and higher; for drivers of premium and prestige vehicles, where personalisation is a key priority. There are seven standard colours but hundreds more bespoke shades available, via a dedicated website. But it’s not only about the colours themselves: Pirelli’s research and development division has also identified new technologies that allow the colours to be applied using cutting edge materials that do not alter the performance characteristics of the tyre. There is also a protective barrier to keep the colours vivid and reduce the risk of fading with time and wear.

In 2014, Pirelli gained 266 new homologations, of which 213 came in the premium and prestige sectors: an increase of 6% compared to last year. Of these, 118 were marked tyres – with a special marking on the sidewall indicating that they have been tailor-made for a vehicle manufacturer. Thanks to these latest arrivals, Pirelli’s homologations now add up to a record 1846 in total all over the world.

Proof of this increase can be found all over the stands that populate the 85th Geneva Motor Show this year, where the most powerful supercars such as the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce as well as the latest-generation SUVs all wear Pirelli tyres.

However, Pirelli is not just about pure performance. Many of the cars at the Geneva Motor Show rely on the Italian firm’s Seal Inside technology, which has been developed by Pirelli’s engineers to allow motorists to continue their journeys even in the event of a puncture.

THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS SUVs USE P ZERO OR SCORPION TYRES

The highlights of this year’s Geneva Motor Show include some of the world’s most important SUVs, from the Audi Q7 – making its European debut – to the restyled Audi Q3, not to mention the new and technically advanced Volvo XC90, as well as the BMW X5M and X6M. In order to put all their power and traction down onto the ground effectively, all these diverse models have chosen Pirelli Scorpion (either in Scorpion Verde or All Season guises) or P Zero tyres.

Pirelli has come up with made-to-measure tyres, specifically homologated for each one of these key SUVs to guarantee excellent grip and wet braking, combined with the inherent stability needed to get the most out of cars that weigh this much.

P ZERO FOR THE LATEST-GENERATION SUPERCARS

Following last December’s presentation of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Pirelli Edition, yet another chapter of the now-legendary collaboration between Lamborghini and Pirelli will be shown in Geneva. The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce is supplied exclusively on P Zero tyres. This latest supercar to emerge from Sant’Agata Bolognese, making its world debut in Geneva, relies on P Zero Corsa rubber to place its extreme power onto the road.

PIRELLI’S SEAL INSIDE TECHNOLOGY ALSO ON DISPLAY IN GENEVA

As part of a range of solutions that define Pirelli’s philosophy of ‘Extended Mobility’, Pirelli is also displaying its Seal Inside technology. As well as being seen on original equipment Pirelli tyres for many new Volkswagens (from the Touran, making its debut in Geneva, to the Passat shown in Paris last year) this technology enhances the premium status of Pirelli’s latest product: Cinturato All Season, the tyre for all seasons, launched onto the European market in January.

Seal Inside is new technology that allows motorists to continue their journeys, without a loss of tyre pressure, even in the event of a puncture up to 4mm. If this happens, a sealing agent on the inside of the tyre solidifies around the foreign object that has caused the puncture in order to prevent air escaping. Once the object is extracted, the sealing agent expands to plug the gap. This technology showcases another important safety innovation from Pirelli.

***

Pirelli Press Office
Ph. +39 02 6442 4270 – pressoffice@pirelli.com – www.pirelli.com

Tyres,Company,news

The sunshine of Taormina, the cold from the snowy peaks of Mount Etna, and the frost on the hillside roads of Acireale. Pirelli has chosen Sicily, where at this time of the year all four seasons are found on one island, to launch its new Cinturato All Season tyre in Europe.
This latest product enhances Pirelli’s line-up by offering a tyre that works equally well throughout the year, in accordance with all local laws and offering the highest standards of safety on every road surface. It is perfect in summer, without any of the performance drop-off seen by winter tyres in hot conditions, and works just as well in non-extreme winter conditions – as typically seen in towns and cities. In fact, the Cinturato All Season delivers its very best performance in those conditions where having either a summer tyre or a winter tyre would be a compromise.
Pirelli has created a genuinely all-purpose tyre that allows the car owner to just ‘arrive and drive’ – whatever the conditions. Thanks to the Cinturato All Season every motorist can sleep easily at night, saving time by not having to carry out the traditional seasonal tyre change, and also feeling the reassurance of Pirelli’s Seal Inside technology, which automatically seals up the hole in the event of a puncture, meaning that journeys can continue uninterrupted.

WHO IT IS FOR. Pirelli continues to recommend winter tyres for performance cars and extreme conditions, but the company also wanted to satisfy people who prefer a single tyre due to their particular pattern of vehicle usage, rather than alternating between summer and winter tyres. The new Cinturato All Season is aimed at owners of city cars, who aren’t looking for extreme performance and who don’t cover a huge
number of kilometres per year. In particular, the new Pirelli tyre is aimed at women, young drivers, and second family cars, with the idea of not just offering a tyre but an actual ‘service’ that makes life easier: ideal for those who live in large and busy cities, where winter conditions are never that extreme. The All Season is designed for recently manufactured cars with small to medium engines, and it will be available in 15-inch, 16-inch and 17-inch versions. By the end of 2015, there will be 21 different sizes of All Season tyre.

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. The biggest challenge that Pirelli’s engineers faced when developing this new tyre was to come up with a product that brought the best of a summer tyre and the best of a winter tyre together in one package. To achieve this, the creators of the tyre started off with a directional tread pattern design, which optimises water expulsion through two wide longitudinal and lateral channels, reducing the risk of aquaplaning.
Thanks to this innovative design, noise has also been reduced, both on the outside of the car (in accordance with increasingly stringent European noise legislation) and also on the inside of the car, enhancing driving enjoyment.
Another distinctive characteristic of the new Cinturato All Season is 3D sipe technology. The All Season tread pattern is conceived so that both on wet and dry surfaces the 3D sipes can help improve performance under braking and in corners, by optimising the movement of the tread blocks. This ensures even wear and so prolongs tyre life. On snowy surfaces the tread blocks open up to capture snow and provide excellent roadholding. For that reason, the All Season is distinguished by the distinctive snowflake and mountain symbol as well as an M+S (mud and snow) marking, which guarantee complete safety in winter conditions.

The final step of development on which Pirelli’s engineers concentrated was the tread pattern compound. Thanks to Full Silica technology, Pirelli was able to devise a compound capable of performing at its best throughout a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. The optimal distribution of silica within the compound and use of latest-generation polymers have allowed the thermal capacity of the tyre to be greatly improved.
The combination of all these technical innovations earned the new Cinturato All Season a win straight out of the box in one of the most prestigious tests published by the global specialist media. The new All Season claimed first place in a comparative test organised by authoritative German magazine ‘Autobild’, where it gained a verdict of ‘exemplary’. This was thanks to “stable lateral grip and excellent roadholding in the
wet.” The German magazine also praised the tyre’s “safety in aquaplaning conditions, precise direction, and pleasant driving feel on both wet and dry surfaces.”

SEAL INSIDE. Pirelli’s latest tyre is the only aftermarket All Season tyre available with Seal Inside technology. Cinturato All Season (in the most popular sizes) is equipped with this new construction technology that allows journeys to continue without loss of tyre pressure in the event of a puncture caused by an object up to 4mm in diameter. If this happens, a sealant within the tyre forms an airtight seal that wraps around the foreign object as soon as it penetrates the tyre, ensuring that air doesn’t escape and the tyre stays up. When the object is eventually removed, the sealant itself plugs the resulting gap. The sealant is protected by a special film before the tyre is even mounted onto a wheel, ensuring maximum effectiveness.
Seal Inside technology provides another advantage for the consumer by ensuring greater safety and peace of mind, given that 85% of cases where tyres lose pressure are caused by penetration from foreign objects. This technology can also be used on any type of vehicle as it does not require specific rims or a tyre pressure monitoring system.

THE ALL SEASON MARKET. According to a recent study (Research and Markets), the All Season sector in Europe is expanding, with a yearly growth rate of double digit from 2013-2018. GFK’s data currently shows the European All Season market at around 4%, representing a growth of 50% compared to last year and with a further increase predicted in the coming months, as indicated by the previous study. Pirelli could not ignore this growing demand, and so has brought an exciting and innovative new premium product to the lower end of the market.

Also at the show: the recently introduced Series 01 truck tyres, and Pirelli’s latest motorbike products

Pirelli has revealed the new Cinturato P7 Blue at the Essen tyre show, designed to offer cars with medium-sized engines increased mileage, reduced braking distances and lower rolling resistance. As well as this latest addition to the Cinturato family, Pirelli is exhibiting the latest products for cars, trucks and bikes at its stand.

CINTURATO P7 BLUE. The Cinturato range welcomes an important newcomer, shown for the first time in Germany this week. The new P7 Blue lines up alongside the existing P7: the very first ecological tyre for cars with medium-sized engines that was launched by Pirelli in 2009. The Cinturato P7 Blue shares its environmental approach and consistent performance with the original P7 – which was an instant success both in sales and road tests – but marks a step forward when it comes to wet braking and rolling resistance, offering an extended mileage at the same time.

The Cinturato P7 Blue, shown at Essen from June 5 to 8 in size 235/45R17 XL, is already available on the European market with the first sizes: the range calls for 16 by 2012. This latest tyre from Pirelli is directly derived from the Italian firm’s experiences in Formula One™. As well as sharing a name with Pirelli’s full wet F1™ tyre, the Cinturato P7 Blue uses the same research and modelling processes as its Formula One™ counterpart. The new tyre has been designed and developed with the help of sophisticated mathematical modelling simulations, which allow Pirelli’s engineers to assess the performance and reaction of the rubber under a huge range of different conditions.

THE OTHER TYRES AT ESSEN. Alongside the new Cinturato P7 Blue, Pirelli is also exhibiting at the Essen show that opens to the public today:

- Cinturato P7 (225/50 R 17) – green performance for cars with medium-sized engines;
- P Zero (225/40 R 18) – the Ultra High Performance tyre for supercars and sports saloons;
- Scorpion Verde (275/45 R 20) – The ecological high-performance tyre for SUVs and Crossover vehicles;
- Snowcontrol3 (205/55 16 91 H), Sottozero II (225/45 18 95V XL) and Scorpion Winter (275/45R20 XL) – winter tyres for city cars, high performance cars and SUVs respectively;
- P Zero Silver – the latest addition to the P Zero family, which uses technology and development processes seen in Formula One™. It has been created as an aftermarket product for sporting coupés and prestige saloons.

Pirelli is also displaying the latest Series 01 truck tyres at Essen, which benefit from the latest compound, structure and tread pattern innovations introduced by the research and development division:

- H:01 (315/70 R 22.5 FH:01 for steered axles and 315/70 R 22.5 TH:01 for tractor units) – tyres designed for use on motorways and trunk routes, which guarantee reduced wear on the tread pattern;
- ST:01 (435/50 R 19.5, 445/45 R 19.5, 245/70 R 17.5) for use on trailers and semi-trailers.

Pirelli’s motorbike tyres can also be seen on the Italian firm’s stand:

- Diablo Rosso Corsa (190/55 ZR 17) – a high performance tyre for road and track use, developed for motorbikes both with and without fairings;
- Night Dragon (240/40 VR 18) – developed to offer excellent performance for bikers who love custom bikes such as Harley Davidson;
- Scorpion Trail (190/55 ZR 17) – a road-going enduro tyre, designed for trail bikes that are mostly used on the road;
- Scorpion MX 554 Mid Hard (110/85 – 19 =>Breite 127mm, Umfang 692mm) – developed for medium and hard terrain, taking in sand and gravel surfaces as well as the stony surfaces often found on motocross circuits.

EUROPEAN LABEL. Some aspects of the performance of the new Cinturato P7 Blue are summarised by the new European label. This will become compulsory for all tyres supplied to cars and commercial vehicles from 1 November 2012. The latest addition to the Cinturato range claims top marks in rolling resistance and wet braking – ‘AA’ and ‘AB’ in different sizes– underlining the cutting edge technology within Pirelli’s premium tyre range, of which the new Blue is an important part. Pirelli’s ecological truck tyres also take maximum scores: the Super Single ST:01, for example, is rated ‘A’ in wet grip, while the FH:01 scores ‘B’ in rolling resistance. The full scores for Pirelli’s entire truck range will be available from 1 July.

Pirelli’s Chief Technical Officer Maurizio Boiocchi commented: “The new European tyre label regulations present an opportunity for the consumer to know more about three important parameters: rolling resistance, noise and wet braking. This will help them to evaluate and choose their tyres, but at the same time, it is not enough to paint the whole picture of a tyre’s characteristics. The overall assessment of a tyre needs to include other parameters too, such as dry braking and roadholding on both wet and dry surfaces – on straight sections as well as through corners. The label does not currently include information about mileage and how easy it is to re-tread the tyres – which is essential for trucks – nor does it make any specific reference to criteria needed to judge winter tyres. So the correct advice from specialised dealers is still invaluable when it comes to matching a tyre with a customer’s exact requirements.”

Latest generation Pirelli winter tyres, a new snowboard developed by Pirelli PZero in collaboration with Burton, and fashion with the new snow suits, were the key ingredients of the day staged between the city centre and the Igora Park skidrome, 80 km to the north, where winter is still in full swing with temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius. Testimonials were Formula 1™ pilot Vitalij Petrov (Pirelli is Formula 1™ 2011-2013 official tyre supplier) and two gorgeous Russian top models, Eugenia Volodina (featured in the 2005 Pirelli Calendar by Patrick Demarchelier) and Tanya Mityusina who, during the tests on snow, talked to reporters about the most common experiences faced by drivers in winter. DRIVE SAFELY IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS. The dynamic tests on the snow at Igora Park with the most powerful SUVs concentrated on road safety, a core concern for Pirelli Bicocca research, which considers women the most cautious and attentive drivers. According to recent market research, while men are seduced by the car's style and performance, women focus more on safety and comfort, perhaps because they view cars primarily as a means of transport for the family and children in particular. No accident then that we chose to test our tyres on the latest SUVs, powerful high-tech vehicles commonly associated with the idea of safety and comfort by women, who already represent 30% of the drivers for this category. The Igora Park tests, conducted by Vitali Petrov, underlined the key role that tyres play in safety and performance and the importance of choosing the right type of rubber for specific weather and road conditions. Tyres represent the only point of contact with the road surface and in the majority of cases the actual contact area is only slightly wider than a credit card. This minimal surface has to guarantee the grip of the whole vehicle, determining its braking distance and stability. The tests were conducted comparing winter and summer tyres in three different situations representative of the most common driving conditions during the cold season. The first comparison focused on braking and demonstrated how the wrong tyre can increase the vehicle’s braking distance by as much as 30 metres, even at relatively low speeds, a difference which can dangerously compromise the chances of avoiding an obstacle. The second comparison showed how the wrong tyres make it impossible to control the vehicle, especially on a bend. The final test revealed that a snow climb can be tricky even for a powerful SUV. Choice of tyres is fundamental not just in extreme conditions of snow and ice, but throughout the autumn and winter months until spring, when pouring rain or morning frost can often make roads treacherous. Even in a Mediterranean climate winter tyres are more suitable for winter conditions, primarily because of the materials used in their manufacture. For summer tyres “colder” materials are used which adapt better to higher road temperatures, while for winter tyres we use “warmer” ingredients that heat up more quickly and give the grip needed for braking and stability. Winter materials also contain substances that shed snow flakes or water molecules more readily, to counter the instability that makes them slippery. Another basic difference between summer and winter tyres is the tread, that part of the tyre in contact with the tarmac. In a summer tyre the channels are less well defined, while in a winter tyre the grooves are deeper cut and run outwards to drain as much water or snow as possible, leaving a cleaner surface for the rest of the tyre, thus improving stability and braking. In addition, winter tyres usually have tiny blades that act like hundreds of little feet to grip the road and better ensure control of the vehicle. A SNOWBOARD WITH SUPERCAR GRIP. “The Snow on Board” event also presented an opportunity to launch the latest entries to the Pirelli winter tyres family, such as the complete PZero snowboarding kit, fruit of technological collaboration with industry leader Burton. This includes Mistery, the lightest snowboard ever made by Burton, custom-built like the racing cars which inspired its line and colours, and ION bindings and boots which represent the core of the Pirelli / Burton partnership. For the sole of the boots Pirelli Bicocca researchers developed a compound and a tread inspired by Pirelli tyres to guarantee snowboarders maximum grip, comfort and control, comparable to high performance cars. PIRELLI PZERO SNOW SUITS: HI-TECH GLAMOUR. All the latest technological solutions used on PZero sporting gear come from the Pirelli labs. The Pirelli Industrial Design project shares the same high performance materials and basic philosophy that lies behind our tyres: the best possible solution for the specific weather conditions. The high-tech Winter Sottozero snow is the perfect blend of innovation, comfort and glamour. THE SNOW SUIT. The suit is made of waterproof, transpiring bi-elastic technical fabric with 10” water column resistance. The filling is termoactive, a new generation active fabric that guarantees maximum thermal protection even in extremely cold weather. The seams and appliques are all heat-welded and there are numerous details such as rubberized protections from snowboard edges, an inner pocket with a foldaway neck warmer in technical fabric, windstop wristbands and multipurpose pockets. PIRELLI PZERO AND BURTON COLLABORATE ON A DEDICATED SNOWBOARDING LINE Pirelli PZero and Burton have launched a high-tech partnership to develop a complete high performance snowboarding kit (boots, snowboard and bindings) in distinctive gold and black. The lines and colours - black and gold, glamour and technology - were inspired by the fascinating and daredevil world of 1970s motor racing. On the one hand there is BURTON, pioneer of snowboard manufacturing, up to meeting any challenge on the snow, whether on the slopes, freeriding or in the park. On the other there's PIRELLI, the brand that is synonymous with excellence in performance and style. The pivotal product of this collaboration is ION: the Burton boot with a Pirelli branded sole. Top of the range and equipped with “Total Comfort” technology, the boot is lightweight and delivers high performance. Drawing on its tyre manufacturing expertise, Pirelli has developed a special compound to meet the rider’s needs with a design inspired by winter tyres for unprecedented grip. The collaboration also produced: MISTERY: a one-of-kind snowboard, custom-built like a racing car fitted with Pirelli tyres, it is the lightest snowboard ever made by Burton, fast and agile in glossy black with gold detail. The 2013 Burton Diode EST MADE FOR PIRELLI bindings: total control in all possible conditions, like driving an F1 car. Top performance and minimum weight. The boots will be available at all BURTON retailers worldwide from August 2012 and from Pirelli Corso Venezia in Milan. The snowboard and bindings will be sold exclusively at Pirelli Corso Venezia in Milan for the 2012-2013 winter season. THE NEW PZERO 2012/2013 COLLECTION WATERPROOF RAIN A preview of the 2012-2013 Fall/Winter Collection Rain and fabrics work together as a team in this collection for some surprising results. Drops of water from the sky slip right off these specially waterproofed garments. For the next 2012-2013 Fall/Winter Collection, Pirelli PZero has decided to play a new “creative tailor” card, coupling the latest technology with traditional garment manufacture. With an extra challenge: protection that doesn't show, keeping the essential ingredient hidden. Today's sports gear is moving from tech to wear to tech to hide. As with the latest cars, where the technology is there but you can’t see it (just think about airbags or ABS), we decided to hide the technical components, which do their job without being seen. The Prince of Wales men's trench coat conceals a gel-based polyurethane membrane and highly colourful thermotaping that guarantees maximum protection and waterproofing, in the finest Pirelli tradition. The Pirelli heritage can be seen on the labels and the images on the inside jacket pocket, taken from the Pirelli Collection archives. Tradition meets innovation in textiles and materials, with a bomber jacket made of PVC- coated flannel with thermotape stitching and technical woven hems. Creative tailoring for the women's collection too: blouson-capes with an imitation raccoon collar, technical fabric and padding, down jackets in metallic colours with functional details and high wind and rain resistant jackets in resinated ripstop nylon. This is the first Ultra High Performance road tyre to be directly derived from Formula One, developed for sports cars and sporting saloons. The P Zero Silver was launched at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain, at the same time as the first Formula One tests that mark the launch of the 2012 season took place. The new tyre expands the P Zero range, and marks the first in a series of highly specialised Pirelli road car tyres, ensuring the maximum level of performance even after long distances. Thanks to the same processes that are used in Formula One, Pirelli underlines some of the key characteristics of the entire P Zero range through the new Silver – with the emphasis on durability. The structure, compound and tread pattern design of the Silver have been developed to resist any deformation in the tyre’s profile, lengthening the tyre’s life and extending the consistency of its performance. The Silver has been conceived for drivers who enjoy performance and use their cars frequently. The P Zero Silver is particularly designed for people who drive their cars every day and cover more than 20,000 kilometres per year, mostly on motorways. The P Zero Silver will be produced in eight sizes, for 19 to 20 inch wheels, and will be available as a limited edition in European markets from April 2012. The Silver constitutes the ‘missing link’ between two of Pirelli’s most famous tyre ranges: P Zero, fitted as original equipment to the world’s fastest and most desirable cars, and Cinturato P7 – a best-selling, high-performance ecological tyre, which has triumphed in some of the world’s most demanding magazine tests. With the Silver, Pirelli is particularly concentrating on W, Y and Z speed ratings (i.e. for speeds greater than or equal to 270km / h) with 19-inch wheels. The European market in this sector has expanded by 260% in the last six years, with an average growth rate of 24%. These tyres are now fitted to saloon cars and medium-sized coupés, whereas in the past they were the exclusive preserve of exotic supercars. Formula One in the P Zero Silver. With the P Zero Silver, Pirelli allows everyday motorists to benefit from the main innovations and production processes introduced for Formula One. These sophisticated techniques ensured a consistent and rapid evolution of the tyres supplied to all the grand prix teams last year. This latest road tyre from the famous P Zero range shares the same mathematical modeling process with its Formula One equivalent. In particular, the design and development took place using the same state of the art computer simulation, which allows the tyre’s performance and behavior to be assessed under an extremely wide range of conditions. This virtual modeling allowed Pirelli to develop in record time a tyre that not only underlines the latent characteristics of the entire P Zero range – emphasising and improving durability – but also heralds a new collection of highly specialised road car tyres. These unique processes allowed Pirelli to develop its Formula One tyres in just a few months, recreating real race conditions in a laboratory. By applying these methods to the new P Zero Silver for the road, Pirelli’s research team has been able to create a bespoke tyre for motorists who need premium performance from their coupés and sporting saloons, even after driving long distances. The Pirelli P Zero Silver also shares new materials, polymers and resins with the Formula One tyres, together with new technologies for compound development and production, as well as the construction process. In particular, the new tyre will be produced using the latest MIRS technology, Pirelli’s unique robotised system that ensures the best possible quality and precision. The entire production run for the P Zero Silver will take place at the SettimoTorinese plant in Turin, Italy, where all the current Formula One compounds are produced. The P Zero Silver name in Formula One denotes a hard-compound tyre that combines durability with high performance. In exactly the same way, the roadgoing P Zero Silver tyre offers high performance, safety and increased durability, thanks to innovative technologies that unite the characteristics of the soft and hard compounds. This is a brand new concept for highperformance tyres, confirming Pirelli’s position at the cutting edge of product innovation. The vision has been turned into reality by Pirelli’s engineers thanks to the optimisation of the tread pattern and the unique structure of the tyre, which allows a more uniform distribution of the contact patch and guarantees even wear with optimal control under all circumstances. Pirelli aims to become the world leader in the premium sector by 2015, encouraged by consumer patterns that increasingly point towards high-level products. Between 2011 and 2015, growth in the premium tyre sector is expected to be 9.6% per year, compared to a standard growth rate of 3.7%. Pirelli is able to rely on a great experience in the premium sector, thanks to original equipment deals with some of the leading German car manufacturers arrived at through the company’s research and development centre in Germany. The importance of this vital segment for Pirelli is underlined by a budget that is entirely devoted to it, employing 1,200 specialised researchers worldwide.

Tyres,news

Firstly, the Aventador is the epitome of style. The iconic scissor doors contribute to its outstanding design and the slashes through the surface give it a sense of vigor even when the engine is not running. Secondly, comfort is also a strong feature of the car. Weighing slightly over 1500 kg, the 700 horsepower engine takes just 2.9 seconds to reach a speed of 100 km/h - feel the driving comfort even at higher speeds. The pleasure of driving is one of the characteristics Lamborghini looks for in its cars and it’s acknowledged as one of the features of Pirelli P Zero™ Tyres. The specific tread pattern design and robust tyre shoulders offer superb car handling allowing the Aventador LP 700-4 optimum performance both into and throughout cornering, even in the most demanding road conditions. And, last but not least, safety is the element on which both Pirelli and Lamborghini won’t compromise. New compounds and a maximised footprint allow the Pirelli P Zero™ Tyres to reach exceptional levels of safety in braking whilst the specific tread pattern characteristics give the maximum grip even in wet conditions."

Implemented in 2000, the Modular Integrated Robotized SystemTM, better known as MIRSTM, is the production process for automated manufacturing of top-of-the-range Pirelli tyres. A true revolution in the sector based on continuously-updated technology resulting from more than a hundred patents developed by in-house researchers. A technology increasingly utilised when facing the challenges linked to the reduction of rolling resistance that require the use of innovative materials and solutions. The MIRS team - Breuberg, Germany This production milestone “first and foremost represents the success of a team that, following years of work, has turned a revolutionary process into a mature industrial reality with a magnificent result”, stresses MIRS™ manager Marco Marioni. “The objective has always been global as far as financial performance is concerned, with fairly low volumes but a strong connection with original equipment fitment”. A great success, also logistically speaking, since it enjoys extremely widespread distribution despite still being a niche product. A challenge which Pirelli is able to answer thanks to the excellent flexibility provided by the MIRSTM process.

Tyres,Paddock News,Products,news

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED FOR ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE TYRES TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW TYRE FOR CITYCARS

IT EXPANDS THE PIRELLI “GREEN” RANGE

Pirelli presents Cinturato P1, the high-tech “green” tyre developed for small and medium-sized cars, which guarantees lower fuel consumption, performance on every surface and is environmentally friendly. The new addition to the Cinturato family was tested at its world premiere by the European media in Puglia, on a route winding through olive trees, beautiful villages and the Adriatic coast. Cinturato P1, soon to be launched also in Latin America and Asia, will be available on the European spare parts market by the end of 2011 in sizes ranging from 14” to 16” and has already been selected as original equipment by BMW. Cinturato P1 expands Pirelli’s “green” range, launched three years ago with Cinturato P4 and P6, for city cars and small-sized cars, and then enhanced by Cinturato P7, for medium-sized cars. The new Cinturato includes Pirelli technology developed for its Ultra High Performance tyres: Cinturato P1 was designed according to the already successful state-of-the-art standards of Cinturato P7, winner of major tests carried out by European certification bodies and the most influential specialized magazines. Cinturato P1 was, in fact, developed at Pirelli’s Research and Development center in Milan, where its Formula 1 tyres are also devised. The new tyre represents a synthesis of the eco-friendly experience gained by Pirelli through its “Green Performance” strategy and the technology developed by engineers to ensure top performance. The DNA of Cinturato P1 thus summarizes the “green” characteristics of Cinturato and Scorpion Verde, the eco-friendly tyre studied for Suvs and Crossover vehicles, and the technology studied for the P Zero family. Safety, driving pleasure, attention to the environment and versatility are the four key characteristics of Cinturato P1, perfectly in line with new market requirements: performance seen as safety, energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Cinturato P1 is the tyre designed to comply with the coming 2012 UE Directive and label: in the first official tests, the new Pirelli tyre distinguished itself in terms of fuel savings and noise reduction, two key parameters to ensure a high “environmental score". Thanks to its 15% lower weight and the choice of innovative technological solutions, the new Cinturato achieves a reduction in rolling resistance of up to 25%. Also in “green” terms, Cinturato P1 reduces external noise by 1,5 dB and inner noise by 1dB, improving ride comfort and driving pleasure. The P1’s eco-friendly character is matched by its high technological content: in some sizes, the new tyre is available also in the Run Flat version, which provides continual mobility. The new Cinturato reinforces Pirelli’s “Green Performance” strategy - “green” products accounted for 36% of sales in 2010 – and accounted for 27% of the total sales worldwide. This makes the Cinturato eco-friendly range the Group’s most important and one that is destined to grow, in line with the expected growth of the “Green Performance”. The eco-friendly Pirelli products have recently won awards in several markets and from the most influential magazines. Cinturato P7, in particular, received “best tyre” rating from the German magazine Autobild distinguishing it for wet and dry performance. Cinturato P7 obtained the highest overall evaluation out of 50 different tyre models taken into consideration for the tests. Cinturato P7 received also the “exemplary” rating from Autobild, distinguishing it for its durability and the “very recommended” rating from the European Auto Club (ACE) in collaboration with GTU in tests carried out in February. The tests, involving 7 different producers’ tyres, crowned Cinturato P7 as the best summer tyre in the category, for overall performance, safety and driving pleasure. The Scorpion Verde has also been successful and was judged tyre of the year in the 4x4 and SUV categories by the Spanish magazine Neumáticos y Mecánica Rápida. Scorpion Verde is the first eco-friendly high performance tyre developed by Pirelli for high environmental impact cars, such as Suv and Crossover vehicles. The performance and eco-friendly characteristics of Pirelli tyres are recognized and appreciated by major car manufacturers. The latest acknowledgment came from Toyota, which judged Pirelli as its best supplier in South America. Pirelli produces tyres for the Japanese car manufacturer in Brazil, where the Italian Group has five factories and a leading position in the production of original equipment and spare parts.

<pp:caseid>265401</pp:caseid>

Pirelli has teamed up with four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen to set a brand new world record, with the Finn reaching 330.695 kilometres per hour (205.48 miles per hour) on ice in a Bentley Continental Supersports. Kankkunen used Pirelli Sotto Zero winter tyres over a 16-kilometre course on the frozen Baltic Sea off Finland yesterday (February 15), where the ice is 70 centimetres thick. Despite tricky conditions that included snowstorms and cross winds. Kankkunen was successful in his attempt to break his own record, averaging 330 kilometres per hour in both directions – as required by the Guinness Book of Records, which verifies record attempts around the world. “The tyres were really good, because to make them work in the conditions we had was not at all easy,” said Kankkunen, who won his last world championship rally on Pirelli tyres with Subaru on the 1999 Rally Australia. “First of all, it was so cold. Secondly, the ice is so slippery and bumpy that you have wheelspin all the way to 300 kph: it’s just a question of playing with the throttle and gears to find the speed.” The car was standard apart from a welded-in roll cage, rear bumper-mounted parachute and a set of standard Pirelli Sotto Zero winter tyres to 275/40R20 specification. The 51-year-old Kankkunen believes that record-breaking attempts such as his run in Finland can help to develop road car tyres for everyday drivers in future. “This is a very different experience to driving on the road, but you have to push to the maximum sometimes to see how things work. You can see from these tyres that the techniques of construction are very good and learn some important lessons about how to build tyres in the future to cope with even the most extreme conditions.” In celebration of Kankkunen’s achievement, 100 limited edition Supersports will be made and shown for the first time at next month’s Geneva Motorshow. They will be the most powerful Bentley road cars ever made. Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery commented: “Many congratulations to Juha and Bentley from all of us at Pirelli. Juha has been very important figure in Pirelli’s motorsport history, who drove on our Scorpion rally tyres as recently as last year, when he made a one-off comeback on Rally Finland. It’s great to see him still setting records with Pirelli, and this latest achievement – taken as Pirelli builds up to its Formula One race return in Bahrain – just underlines the creativity and extent of our know-how in a huge variety of areas.”

Tyres,Company,Motorsport,news

The Pirelli Group and Autostrade per l'Italia presented the summer highway safety campaign, "Safe&Go", in Rome today, with Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Altero Matteoli. The campaign was designed and will be carried out by the two companies. Participating with Minister Matteoli, were Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Chairman of the Pirelli Group, and Giovanni Castellucci and Fabio Cerchiai, the Managing Director and Chairman of Autostrade per l'Italia. The prevention and awareness campaign is aimed at all drivers who use the Autostrade per l'Italia network during the coming weekends of heavy outbound and inbound holiday traffic, with the objective of making the holiday period safer for everyone. The project will begin on the weekend of 19-20 June and end on the weekend of 28-29 August. During the weekends of the campaign, specialized technicians will offer complete tyre check-ups free of charge at Pirelli check points located at key points in the Autostrade per l'Italia network, checking pressure and evaluating wear on the outside of the tyres, as well as measuring remaining tread. Check-ups will be completed with the presentation of a certificate that indicates the tyre's overall condition. Additionally, drivers will receive informational material regarding proper tyre maintenance and they will also receive instruction in the use of a thickness gauge. This tool, which will be given free to every driver, can be used to check the remaining tread level without needing to visit a mechanic. By law, tyre tread must be greater than 1.6 millimetres. In order to increase driver awareness regarding the importance of checking tyres during the six weeks of the campaign, the overhead message boards located throughout the Autostrade per l'Italia network will encourage drivers to check their tyres at the appropriate service areas. The project will be supported by informational signs distributed to 150 different areas throughout the highway network and by an intense informational campaign using the radio, Internet, and press, as well as through the distribution of 250,000 highway safety manuals in the service areas, which contain the manual designed and promoted by Autostrade per l'Italia, that explains the rules to follow for safe highway driving. Additionally, the campaign will be carried out with the assistance of the 1,400 tyre dealers in the Pirelli network, located throughout Italy, who will be asked to inform drivers about the fundamental role that the tyre holds and about the importance of proper maintenance and preventive care. Tyre quality and proper tyre maintenance are two of the most important elements in terms of preventing highway accidents. Tyres are the only point of contact that cars have between the vehicle and the road -- this contact is the determining factor when braking, as well as in terms of road grip under all conditions, from dry, to wet, to straight line, to turning. Under certain conditions, a worn tyre or one that is not inflated properly can increase braking distance by up to 70%, making it impossible to avoid obstacles or to keep the vehicle straight. As numerous field tests have shown, not enough attention is paid to tyres. According to a recent study carried out by Federpneus and Assogomma with the assistance of the Highway Police, over 50% of Italians travel with under-inflated tyres or tyres that are worn or damaged or even not approved for use. The mobile garages will be spread out to work with the flow of traffic both going towards holiday areas and returning towards the largest urban areas. “Safety, the environment, and performance,” explained Marco Tronchetti Provera, the president of the Pirelli group, "are the fundamental elements that guide our group's research activities. Pirelli's labs are focused on finding innovative solutions to help protect the environment and increase road safety, while still offering maximum performance. However, it's important that there be an understanding between companies and public institutions. An important step forward was represented by the recent decision to make electronic pressure monitoring systems for tyres on new cars mandatory in Europe from 2012 on. In the last few months, the European Commission has also been discussing adding an additional stage to this product, aimed at increasing the precision of these monitoring systems. These norms offer benefits in terms of safety and in reduction of fuel consumption, without any additional costs. Their approval will be determined by whether the Italian government supports them or not." “It's truly positive," declared Giovanni Castellucci, managing director of Autostrade d'Italia, "that two important companies such as Autostrade and Pirelli have combined their forces for this project that offers concrete benefits in terms of highway safety. Since the company was privatized in 2000, we have reduced the mortality rate on our network by almost 72%. This means 300 fewer fatalities per year, a number that allows us to declare that we have exceeded, two years early, the objective set by the EU to decrease highway fatalities by half. We have succeeded in achieving these results thanks to numerous safety initiatives, including extending draining asphalt throughout the entire network, our public awareness campaign regarding the risks of unsafe driving, the creation of the Consulting Group for Safety and Service Quality, and due to the two million coffees that we have distributed free of charge at night, but above all, thanks to Tutor, the innovative system that controls average driving speed, designed and financed by Autostrade, and installed on over 2,000 kilometres of the network. Tutor, which is managed by the Highway Police, has made it possible to halve fatality rates in the areas where it is installed year after year. This project also includes an incentive campaign to encourage drivers to replace their tyres, which is 100% financed by Pirelli. These incentives call for a contribution of up to Euro 170 for those who to decide to replace their worn or unsuitable tyres with new Pirelli tyres by 14 August 2010. In fact, the safety incentive also provides for an additional Euro 100 discount on successive purchases (by 31 May 2011) of a train of tyres and the additional possibility to gain up to Euro 70 in highway toll bonuses for those that have Telepass Premium. This project is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of proper use and maintenance of tyres and at creating an incentive to replace tyres immediately when necessary, in the case of worn or damaged tyres. The checks will take place on the highway heading towards the sea on 19 June, 26 June, 3 July, 17 July, 31 July, and 28 August, at the following service areas: Prenestina West on the A1, Stura West on the A26, Conero West on the A14, Somaglia West on the A1, and La Pioppa West on the A14. The checks will take place in the areas near important urban areas with the greatest traffic flow on 20 June, 27 June, 4 July, 18 July, 1 August, and 29 August, at the following service areas: Cantagallo East on the A1, Torre Cerrano East on the A14, San Martino East on the A1, and La Macchia East on the A1. An estimated one million travellers will take a break in the Service Areas involved in the initiatives during the campaign.

Other Pirelli and Autostrade per l'Italia initiatives for highway safety

All over the world, the name Pirelli is synonymous with high performance and safety. Highway safety and environmental protection make up the key elements of the Green Performance strategy -- the foundation for the Group's industrial and commercial decisions. Pirelli's efforts in terms of highway safety include numerous training and informational projects, but are especially focused on continuous research and application of innovative technological solutions that support sustainable mobility. This means developing ecological materials and tyre structures that can obtain the utmost in fuel savings, while simultaneously increasing vehicle safety parameters, above all during braking and turning. The fundamental characteristics of the new Pirelli product line are safety, performance, and respect for the environment. This line is part of the Cinturato group, and offers tyres for all types of vehicles, from the Series 01 for heavy transport, to Scorpion Verde for SUVs, and on to the new Winter seasonal tyres. Pirelli research has also led to cutting edge solutions such as the Cyber Tyre, an intelligent tyre able to "read" the roadbed thanks to an integrated chip that controls the wear and pressure of the tyre itself, providing important information about the state of the tyre and the conditions of the road beneath it. And yet again, Pirelli is one step ahead of the European regulations. The first version of the Cyber Tyre, currently in the final stages of testing before market launch, will not only meet all the obligatory regulations in terms of tyre pressure monitoring which come into effect in 2012, but it will also meet the stricter Stage II regulations, which guarantee yet another step forward in terms of tyre safety. The international financial sustainability indexes have been rewarding these efforts since 2000 and in 2010, for the third year in a row, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index declared Pirelli a world leader in sustainability for the auto parts and tyres sector. In the context of its own efforts for highway safety, Autostrade per l'Italia has also developed numerous initiatives over the last few years. Among the various projects, we first note Tutor, the innovative system that is able to obtain information about a vehicle's average speed, which was developed and financed by Autostrade per l'Italia, and is managed by the Highway Police. Tutor brought about a genuine revolution in the general public's driving habits, making them increasingly prudent and responsible. It contributed to a decrease in fatal accidents of over 51%, and decreased the rate of accidents with injuries by 27% in the 2,200 kilometres in which it is installed. The Consulting Group for Safety and Service Quality has also achieved notable results. This Group was established by Autostrade in 2006, with the aim of identifying and developing initiatives and improvement plans to increase service quality and safety. In addition to Autostrade per l'Italia, the following consumer associations participated: Adoc, Adusbef, Codacons, and Federconsumatori, as well as the Polizia Stradale, Asaps, Isoradio, Quattroruote, and the Central Committee for the National Registry of Haulage Contractors. Other initiatives of note include the installation of draining asphalt in 81.6% of the road network, which comes to 100% if areas where this type of intervention isn't appropriate are excluded; the replacement or modernization of 2,577 kilometres of traffic dividers making up more than 90% of the road network; the Tunnel Safety Plan, which involves 407 tunnels and calls for the adaptation of the illumination, ventilation, fire safety, and traffic control systems; the communication campaigns aimed at safe driving in conformance with the Highway Code, including television ads "Use Your Head" (in collaboration with Rai Educational), "Life Is Breath" (1 million alcohol testers distributed free in service areas), and the "Free Coffee" initiative that distributed 2 million free coffees on weekend nights in service areas.

The sweeping, rollercoaster roads and lush green scenery will look very familiar to anybody who has seen The Lord of the Rings, filmed entirely on location in New Zealand. There is a magical atmosphere to the whole country, and this year the rally returns to some of its best-known stages.
The rally is based in Auckland, home to about a third of New Zealand's population, but uses remote service zones so that the drivers can cover plenty of ground during the event. New Zealand is famous for having a larger population of sheep than people, with just five million people distributed across a country that is approximately the same size as Italy, so there's never a shortage of space.

Add that to the fast and cambered smooth gravel roads, spectacular valleys and breath-taking scenery, and you have the recipe for a truly amazing event, which all the drivers love. "The stages are magnificent; it's one of the rallies where you get the most pleasure out of driving," is how Citroen's Sebastien Loeb, the World Rally Championship leader, sums it up.

The distance of Rally New Zealand makes this the longest world championship event since Rallye de France in 2003 so places a huge emphasis on endurance. The hard-compound Pirelli Scorpion tyres that the teams will use face one of their toughest tests yet, as it is currently autumn in New Zealand and variable weather conditions will only add to the challenge. Not only that, but there are several parts of the rally that are held on asphalt: including the pre-event shakedown, which means that the drivers will have very little information to work with as they head into the first loop of stages on Friday morning.

The hard compound tyres are really designed for hot and abrasive gravel conditions, such as the last three rallies in Mexico, Jordan and Turkey. Cooler weather will mean that it takes longer to get heat into the tyres and it is also tricky to find grip on Tarmac stretches and in the event of rain. However, the recent Rally of Turkey, which also contained several asphalted sections, proved the adaptability of Pirelli's Scorpion tyres, even when operating in conditions that they were not designed for. This same versatility is carried through to every tyre in Pirelli's road car range.

Another talking point in New Zealand is set to be road position, as the first car on the road traditionally suffers from having to sweep up loose gravel for the drivers following behind. However, the Pirelli Scorpion's ability to disperse loose gravel quickly and efficiently meant that Citroen driver Sebastien Ogier was able to retain the lead on the second day of Rally of Turkey, even though he was running first.

Pirelli's Rally Manager Mario Isola commented: "New Zealand is a classic event, which holds many good memories for us from the past, and we all enjoy going there. The conditions we are expecting are in the operating window for our soft tyre too, but our experience has shown that the hard tyre remains very fast and driveable even in conditions such as these, so we had no hesitation in nominating it for New Zealand, especially in view of the length of some of the stages. Our tyres have helped to ensure that the fight between the top drivers has been incredibly close this year, and I'm expecting exactly the same again in New Zealand."

New Zealand is also the fourth round of the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship, for two-litre turbocharged Group N cars, and the fourth round of the FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship, which uses normally aspirated two-litre cars. As part of its three-year deal as official supplier to the World Rally Championship, Pirelli also supplies the support championships: underlining the performance of the Italian rubber on a wide range of machinery as well as a wide range of different surfaces.

The 40th Rally New Zealand gets underway with a ceremonial start in Auckland on Thursday evening, before finishing on Sunday after 21 special stages covering 396.50 competitive kilometres.

archive,Tyres,Motorsport

<pp:caseid>265233</pp:caseid>

Just like Pirelli's road car tyres, which have to cope with all the conditions that the world's roads throw at them, the Scorpion rally tyre found on every car competing in the World Rally Championship is able to deal with an enormous variety of surfaces and weather. The story so far has seen Pirelli tyres perform at their best in the ice and snow of Sweden, followed by the rough gravel and high altitude of Mexico. Now the crews head to the desert-like conditions of Jordan, round three of the World Rally Championship, which has only run once before as part of the world series back in 2008. Despite comparatively little previous experience of the stages, the adaptability of Pirelli's tyres is enough to soak up the demands placed on them by the sand, rocks and heat of the desert. The hard-compound Scorpion tyres not only have to provide traction but also disperse the surface sand as efficiently as possible through the tread pattern to find good grip. However, there's a small chance that the Scorpion tyres will have to cope with water as well as sand because of recent unusually wet conditions in Jordan: the heaviest rain that has fallen there in 20 years. The capabilities of the Pirelli control tyre though, which is supplying the World Rally Championship in a three-year deal from 2008 to 2010, enables it to work well even in the widest variety of conditions. Nowhere is this contrast greater than in the different altitudes of the Jordan Rally, which takes place at around 400 metres below sea level, the lowest point in the world, and the previous round in Mexico, which took the crews up to 2800 metres through a mountain range. Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen, the winner of the Jordan Rally with Pirelli when it was last run as a round of the World Rally Championship in 2008, commented: "I have to say that the tyres have been really good under all sorts of different conditions. They've let us get on with the job, which is to try and win the World Championship this year. We've had a good test before this event, and I'm confident that we'll be fully competitive in Jordan." The rally maintains broadly the same format as it did in 2008, with a compact route based around a service area in the Dead Sea resort, about an hour south of the historic capital city of Amman: one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, with the first civilisation recorded there in around 8500 BC. Pirelli's Rally Manager Mario Isola commented: "Jordan is certainly one of the most challenging events we will face all year, simply because of the huge variety of conditions that we are likely to experience. The surface is sandy with a hard base, so on the repeated stages we would expect a reasonable amount of wear due to the abrasive surface. In some places, the roads are like asphalt. The recent changing weather will provide another variable, but we are more than confident in the abilities of our tyres to cope with these extreme conditions." Jordan is also the third round of the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship, for two-litre turbocharged Group N cars, and Super 2000 World Rally Championship, which uses normally aspirated two-litre cars. As part of its three-year deal as official tyre supplier to the World Rally Championship, Pirelli also supplies the support championships: underlining the performance and efficiency of the Italian rubber on a wide range of machinery. Joining the World Rally Championship regulars in Jordan are the competitors in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship. The last round of the Middle East series, the Kuwait Rally, was won by Khalid Al Qassimi, driving a Ford Fiesta S2000 on Pirelli Scorpion tyres. Unusually, the Jordan Rally will get underway in the morning of Thursday 1 April and finish in the afternoon of Saturday 3 April, after 21 stages and 346 competitive kilometres.

archive,Tyres,Company,Motorsport,news

This commitment is evidenced in particular by: - its Ethical Code, a statement of the general principles (transparency, honesty, and fairness) that guide its handling and conduct of operations and which sets out the aims and values of the business as applicable to its main stakeholders - its “Policy for Health, Safety, Environment and Corporate Social Responsibility”, through which Pirelli’s guarantee on the right balance between sustainability and industrial development has become in-house practice and been reinforced - its “Equal Opportunities Statement”, in which Pirelli accepts a whole series of commitments in support of Equal Opportunities in-house and, in particular, of promoting Diversity. The importance Pirelli places on equal opportunities at work is also shown by its backing for the equal opportunities charter (it was one of the first companies to sign up) as recently drawn up by Fondazione Sodalitas, AIAF, AIDDA, Impronta Etica, UCID, and Ufficio Nazionale Consigliera di Parità, with the support of the Ministry for Labour, Health, and Social Policies and the Equal Opportunities Ministry. The sustainability “model” embraced by the Group is based on the United Nations Global Compact, to which Pirelli subscribed back in 2004. Pirelli Group embraces a multi-stakeholder approach with a view to meeting the expectations of all who interact with the undertaking: Environment, Investors, Employees, Customers, Suppliers, Institutions, and the Community at large. Sustainable performance by Pirelli is quantified each year in its Sustainability Report, a key component in communicating aims achieved and new challenges to all Group Stakeholders. In addition, part of the Group’s website that is constantly updated is devoted to sustainability and provides ways for interacting with the community at large. Thanks to the Group’s commitment to sustainability and the results achieved Pirelli, for a number of years, has been included in sustainability indexes, notably FTSE4GOOD Global, European STOXX, ASPI Eurozone®, Axia Ethical Index, the Dow Jones Sustainability World and STOXX, and the ECPI Ethical Index EMU. In particular, for the third year running Pirelli was declared a world ‘Sector Leader’ in sustainability in the "Autoparts and Tyres" industry by Dow Jones, and in the 2010 Sustainability Yearbook, published by Sustainable Asset Management Group (SAM) in cooperation with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, it was recognised as a ‘Gold Class Company’ and ‘Sector Mover’ by SAM. For years Pirelli has been operating certified management systems - OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO9001, ISO/TS 16949, and ISO/IEC 17025 - with a view to ensuring non-stop Quality improvement and a constant reduction in the impact its products, processes, and services have on its workers’ health and safety and on the external Environment, Among official acknowledgements received by Pirelli in 2008-2009, the following deserve mention: - Pirelli was one of the most best known Italian brands worldwide - Pirelli secured inclusion in the “top ten” for social responsibility, a ranking system based on Accountability Rating’s measurement of response capacity and transparency among the biggest Italian undertakings - Pirelli was awarded full marks for human rights and the environment in VIGEO’s latest CSR analysis - Pirelli was one of the 100 most respected and reliable undertakings worldwide, according to New York’s Reputation Institute (both in 2008 and in 2009) - Pirelli won the innovation award presented by the Italian Confederation of Industry. Undertakings on sustainability given by Pirelli worldwide have been numerous. The main ones include: - subscribing to the EU’s CSR Alliance; - membership by Pirelli Tyre in ETRMA, the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association, which was followed by the drafting of the European Road Safety Charter; - participation in the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and in the Tyre Industry Project Group, a project that aims to identify the potential impact on health and the environment of materials associated with tyre manufacturing and use ; - partnership signed with the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) - its stance on managing climate change, as stated in the “The Bali communiqué”, drawn up, signed, and submitted by 150 international undertakings, including Pirelli Tyre, concurrent with the United Nations Conference on climate change in Bali last December. Business and sustainability: focus on the environment The environment is one of the central planks of the 2009-2011 industrial plan that the Group presented at the start of 2009. Consistent with its announcements at that time, the Group is continuing to develop leading-edge products and solutions in the “green economy” sector, which offers significant development opportunities in various areas: sustainable mobility, eco-compatible building construction, and renewable energy. It is expected that by the end of this three-year period the “green” contribution to revenues will rise to about 40% of the total as against about 20% at the end of 2008. In the tyre sector, in particular, Pirelli Tyre is achieving ever higher levels of “Green Performance”, as reflected in its adoption of technologies and solutions for the automotive industry that, in addition to assuring customers a high performance and safety, are increasingly ecological. “Green performance” in tyres means a commitment to reducing consumption as well as emissions of harmful substances, greater mileage, use of eco-compatible materials, and improved safety conditions. The thrust of research by Pirelli in this direction focuses on adopting green technological solutions, ranging from compounds that are more ecological to tyre structures, while not compromising vehicle safety requirements, especially during braking and cornering. Its Green performance strategy applies to all new Pirelli tyres, from its Cinturato line, the historic Pirelli brand newly re-launched last year, to its very advanced “Winter” tyre range. Similarly, its Cyber Tyre, the tyre that “reads” the road surface thanks to an integrated chip, monitors the tyre’s state of health and pressure level, so contributing to a reduction in consumption and in environmental impact. In its tyre manufacturing processes Pirelli has succeeded in particular in improving energy efficiency and in securing a reduced consumption of energy (-9.2%) and water (-12.7%) in the last five years. As regards sustainable mobility and reducing atmospheric pollution, Pirelli Eco Technology offers technologies to contain the polluting emissions of diesel vehicles. Its anti-particulate filters can reduce particulate emissions by over 90% and nitrogen dioxide emissions by over 50%, with an appreciative reduction in fine particles. Recently co-operation began on the spread of anti-particulate filters to China with the assistance of the Italian and Chinese environment ministries. Pirelli Ambiente is the group company that specialises in technology and solutions for sustainable development and its areas of operation are renewable energy sources, environmental remediation, and the energy efficiency of buildings. In particular, the company designs and manufactures photovoltaic plants and produces fuel derived from waste that is used as a replacement for carbon in cement works. Added to this are its activities in energy certification and improving the energy efficiency of buildings. Pirelli Broadband Solutions - the group company specializing in products for broad-band access - represents no departure from the group commitment to developing eco-compatible technology. It, too, sees eco-sustainable development as essential to its planned portfolio for the 2009-2011 period and offers the market innovative low-electricity-consumption products that are made with ecological materials. In the real-estate field, Pirelli RE offers solutions to reduce the potential environmental impact of managing buildings and it is initiating the first integrated program of eco-sustainable building construction through a real-estate operator: "Ecobuilding". The program concerns development projects across the entire market, from the residential to the service-sector segment, that are based on four guiding criteria: energy efficiency; use of eco-compatible materials; use of renewable sources; comfortable living. Taken together, the solutions adopted by the program make high quality standards, eco-sustainability, and energy saving achievable. The benefits for the environment are appreciable and include lower CO2 emissions into the air, reduced electrical energy for making buildings function, and an increasing use of renewable sources.

archive,Tyres,news

Tyres, in fact, are one of the most important elements for safety as they are the only contact the vehicle has with the road surface. The Cinturato P7 guarantees performance both in terms of safety and fuel savings (up to 4.2%), thanks to innovative solutions adopted by Pirelli’s R&D. Safety and ecology go hand-in-hand in many ways, including with respect to handling. Safe driving not only means reducing tyre wear, but also greater respect for the environment, thanks to lower consumption and consequent reduced noxious emissions. However, greater safety and respect for the environment need more than a speciallydesigned tyre. During its lifetime the tyre will require regular pressure checks and drivers need to follow a few rules of “virtuous” conduct: • Use air conditioning sparingly. • Remove all accessories like roof racks, bikes and containers that affect the aerodynamics of the vehicle • Check tyre pressure regularly and always before starting on a long journey. If tyres lack air there is more rolling resistance and the vehicle uses more fuel • Plan ahead for journeys on unknown routes and always check traffic news before setting off, to reduce the risk of getting lost; this means using less fuel and saves money as well as cutting down on pollution. • Avoid overloading the car. • Do not start the engine until you are ready to go and turn it off if you stop for more than three minutes. • Drive at the legal speed limit. • Whenever possible use the higher gear • When not required, turn off all electrical systems like rear de-icers.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

These are the features of Pirelli's historic Cinturato family of tyres, which returned to the market in 2008, with new characteristics focused entirely on eco-friendly performance. In January 2008 the family debuted with its Cinturato P4 and P6, aimed at cars with small- to mid-sized engines, which were warmly received by the market and specialists alike. In 2009 the Cinturato P7 was launched, the first ecological tyre for cars with mid- to large-sized engines. It received the maximum score under the most severe European tests, including, amongst others, the ADAC tests. 2010 will be the year of the Scorpion Verde, developed for SUVs, and completing Pirelli’s green line. Pirelli Cinturato tyres are designed and developed in the company’s laboratories to meet new market demands and to contribute to sustainable mobility. Thanks to innovative compounds, structures and tread design, the Cinturato guarantees reductions in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, while guaranteeing better mileage and enhanced safety on dry and wet surfaces. The Cinturato P7 uses state-of-the-art materials and engineering techniques, and is innovative in every way: compounds, materials, structure and tread design were all developed in equilibrium to guarantee steady performance through the tyre’s useful life in terms of cutting noxious emissions, reducing noise, running economy, shorter braking distances and handling. The P7’s eco profile reveals a tyre made with materials free from aromatic oils, an overall reduction in consumption of up to 4%, and a 30% reduction in noise. As far as safety is concerned, the P7 offers enhanced performance in wet and dry braking, respectively of two metres and one metre. The Cinturato P4 and P6 are for cars with small- to mid-sized engines and have the distinctive ECOIMPACT logo on the side. This is because they offer a 20% reduction in rolling resistance, a reduction of up to 4% in energy consumption and therefore also in noxious emissions, and an average increase from 50,000 to 65,000km in tyre life. This is equal to a 30% increase (trials performed on over 1,000,000km of market testing), equivalent to changing tyres every four years instead of every three for the average motorist (15,000km/year). Safety, which together with other high performance tyres, has always been a reference point for Pirelli research, and which the Cinturato had already maximised in the fifties, is the other cardinal point underpinning the new Cinturato design. The P4 and P6 guarantee greater safety in all weather conditions. In particular, they deliver improved handling on curves and on wet roads, and, above all, decrease braking distance. A car travelling at 80km/h on a wet road needs 11% less braking distance (29.9m instead of 34m), while at 100km/h on a dry road, braking distance is just over 38m instead of the 40.5m required by comparable tyres. Cinturato is a part of tyre history: the original Cinturato radial ply tyre was a revolutionary product, which back in the fifties made Pirelli world renowned among tyre manufacturers. The Pirelli Cinturato tyre patent - recognised worldwide - was developed as a response to the new generation of cars of that era: cars that offered everyone the driving features which were only found in fast sports cars until then. Those Cinturato tyres were not only the basis for the evolution of the entire industry, but also for Pirelli research which, with the new Cinturato tyre, combines the principles of environmental protection with those of performance and safety.

archive,Tyres,news

Its technology has received awards after undergoing the most severe testing -- from the ADAC, the German Automobile Club, which has recognized the safety and reduction in environmental impact guaranteed by the Cinturato P7, the newest member of the Cinturato family, and the first "green" tyre for medium and high-powered cars. The P6 also shone in the German tests for similar reasons. The Scorpion Verde completes the Verde Pirelli line and places the Italian Group at the cutting edge in the sector of technologies that are able to simultaneously contain emissions while increasing safety performance. Green Performance. Apart from the Scorpion Verde and the Cinturato Line, all the Group’s R&D efforts are focused on green performance and in the next few months numerous developments will be introduced that will be a watershed for the entire industry, just like the radial Cinturato of the 1950s and the lowered shoulder of the 1970s. These developments are part of a global, integrated approach to ecology: from increasingly green tyres in all segments to the use of new, non-petroleum-based materials; from integrated solutions for the automotive industry to production processes with increasing environmental respect, in a process that sees ecology applied to the entire chain, from solutions for producing tyres to the end product. This is a process with solid roots in a passion for innovation that has been group philosophy for over 130 years, during which time it has become a reference point for the automotive industry, as well as in its R&D department, whose five centres of excellence worldwide (in Italy, Germany, Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom) employ about one thousand professionals and whose annual expenditure is the highest in the tyre sector (as a percentage of sales). The Cinturato P7 has been developed for more powerful cars and consolidates Pirelli’s position, once again putting the Company on the front line with a tyre that enhances the features of the P4 and P6, launching a challenge never attempted before in the automotive world: a high performance, eco-compatible tyre that sacrifices neither handling nor safety, and even reduces consumption and noxious emissions. Cinturato P6 and P7 pass the ADAC’s summer tests with flying colours. The characteristics of the Cinturato Pirelli were recognized by the most severe tests in Europe, those organized each year by ADAC, the influential German Automobile Club, as well as by the Swiss Touring Club (TCS), and the Austrian Automobile Club (OEAMTC). The tests, carried out on a total of 36 tyres from various manufacturers, crowned Cinturato P7 and P6 as the best summer tyres in their category due to the balance that they offer between ecological characteristics and performance in terms of safety and handling. The Cinturato P7, the first ecological tyre developed for medium and high-powered cars, obtained the highest overall evaluation out of 17 different tyre models taken into consideration for the tests. Pirelli’s new “green” tyre stood out in all of the parameters considered (dry, wet, comfort and noise, fuel consumption, wear, and handling), and was particularly notable for its overall performance and braking on wet surfaces, for low consumption, and quietness. Cinturato P7 is “highly recommended,” by the ADAC which noted, “very well balanced summer tyre, good on both wet and dry, low fuel consumption, the tyre with the lowest noise levels.” The Cinturato P6 was also at the top of the ADAC classifications, which out of 19 tyres considered was chosen as the best in its category, obtaining high scores in all the tests carried out. For the German technicians, the Pirelli tyre is "highly recommended," especially for its handling on wet surfaces, in particular during braking, as well as for low wear.

archive,Tyres,news

Tested for the first time in Spain both on the track and the road, the new Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyre is now racing across the Italian Group’s mobile platform. In fact, Pirelli has dedicated a new web section to its new tyre for SUVs and crossovers, with a wealth of information about the Scorpion and the entire Pirelli product line, with articles, pictures, and videos that provide information and emotion, and can be visited at any time. Just a simple operation with a normal smart phone is enough: point the telephone at the two-dimensional barcode printed on the documentation provided with the product, and the phone goes straight to the site. In fact, you can reach the new tyre’s official website not only by typing in m.pirellityre.com into the smart phone, but also by taking a picture of the QR code with the mobile’s videocamera. In this way, you can get all the characteristics of the Scorpion Verde on your personal mobile phone. Software for decoding the QR code can be downloaded for free by going to http://www.i-nigma.com/Download-nigmaReader.html . Yet again, Pirelli has combined technology with innovation and is the first in the sector to choose a new way to communicate its new products: through QR code technology, Pirelli is able to offer additional content that by its nature doesn’t have a place on paper, but that can arrive directly on your mobile phone screen via the web.

archive,Tyres,news

Barcelona, March 2010 – Pirelli is set to present Scorpion Verde, the first high-performance eco tyre for vehicles with the highest environmental impact – SUVs and Crossovers – at the Idiada International Testing Circuit in Barcelona (Catalonia). The new tyre has been created taking full advantage of all of Pirelli's latest research as well as a design system that integrates new materials, structures, and tread patterns, in order to guarantee savings, respect for the environment, comfort, and safety on all road surfaces. Scorpion Verde is the latest addition to Pirelli’s range of eco-friendly tyres, inaugurated in 2008 with the return of the Cinturato line in the P4 and P6 versions. In 2009, these were expanded to include the P7, the first ecological tyre for medium and high-powered cars. Scorpion Verde completes Pirelli’s range of Scorpion tyres, which already includes the ATR for 4x4s, and the Scorpion Zero, developed for more high performing SUVs. Scorpion Verde will be available on the replacement market from April, 2010. It has been specifically created for the latest generation in SUVs and Crossovers, such as the Volkswagen Touareg, which has already chosen it as its original equipment. Scorpion Verde, technology with an ecological heart. Scorpion Verde develops and applies the environmentally-friendly experience that Pirelli technicians gained with Cinturato P7 together with the high performances of the PZero range. Moreover, the new line of SUV tyres also takes advantage of cutting-edge engineering techniques and delivers innovative integrated solutions from materials to structures. Scorpion Verde has a twofold objective. The first is to contribute to stability and reduce consumption among all categories of SUVs and Crossovers - whose market is currently on the rise and is destined to expand further in the coming years - while the second is to ensure safety and comfort for the drivers of such vehicles, since they have demonstrated the greatest propensity for ecology among motorists (see the “Numbers” file). In particular, Scorpion Verde boasts both new materials and a new structure that guarantees steady performance throughout the tyre’s useful life in terms of diminishing noxious emissions, noise reduction, running economy, shorter braking distances, and comfort. Savings and durability. Scorpion Verde’s eco-friendly profile reveals a tyre made entirely with materials free from aromatic oils. The tyre is in line with the best in the category for overall reduction in fuel consumption of up to 3.9% for city driving and of 3.4% on mixed routes (city and highway driving), and lowers acoustic emissions by one decibel, which is equal to a total reduction of 30% (equivalent to removing an entire lane from a three-lane motorway). In addition, Scorpion Verde was designed to ensure uniform tread wear and increase the tyre’s overall durability with equal performance. All the ecological features of Pirelli's new tyre range are guaranteed by a combination of factors: the development of an optimised profile, the use of cutting-edge materials, an optimised design process and reducing energy dissipation. These features provide a drop in rolling resistance equal to 20% in total, allowing for cutbacks in both consumption and noxious emissions. What is more, Scorpion Verde is also lighter and has been designed to use 10% fewer raw materials, decreasing its environmental impact per unit produced by the same amount. Comfort and safety on all road types. Just as for Pirelli’s Cinturato range, for the Scorpion range as well, having an ecological heart does not mean sacrificing performance, particularly in terms of safety and comfort. In fact, Scorpion Verde combines ecological features with improved braking, greater traction on wet surfaces and better handling. A number of factors have contributed to these results, such as the new materials it uses in its compounds, which integrate the latest technologies; nano-compounds, that is, cutting-edge polymers that adapt to various road conditions; and hybrid fibres, which combine different materials to achieve diverse performance. Specifically, Scorpion Verde was developed to ensure improved safety on wet asphalt thanks to a combination of three factors: a tread pattern with 4 deep longitudinal grooves for increased water dispersion, innovative compounds designed to achieve greater traction on wet surfaces, and reinforced shoulders to optimise lateral grip on all asphalt conditions. Green Performance. Scorpion Verde consolidates Pirelli’s Green Performance, the technology developed by Pirelli Tyre laboratories that focuses on ecology and road safety, or - in other words - sustainable mobility. In addition to Scorpion Verde and the Cinturato range, all the Group’s efforts in Research and Development have also targeted Green Performance. In the coming months, this will entail the introduction of a number of new features which are set to be a watershed for the entire industry, just like the radial Cinturato of the 1950s and the lowered shoulder of the 1970s. These developments are part of a global, integrated ecological approach that spans from increasingly green tyres in all segments to the use of new, non-petroleum-based materials; from integrated solutions for the automotive industry to production processes with increasing environmental respect, in a process that sees ecology applied to the entire chain, from solutions for producing tyres to the end product. Pirelli’s is a commitment with long-standing, solid roots that can be traced back to a passion for innovation that has been the Group’s philosophy for over 130 years. During this time, this commitment has become a reference point for both the automotive industry and its R&D department, whose five centres of excellence worldwide (Italy, Germany, Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom) employ about one thousand professionals and whose annual expenditure is the highest in the tyre sector (as a percentage of sales). Scorpion Verde is the first tyre with ecological features to be developed for SUVs and Crossovers, placing Pirelli at the forefront once more with a tyre that perfectly combines the features of Cinturato and Pzero while launching a new (hereto unseen) challenge in the automotive world: high performance, eco-compatible tyres that forgo neither handling nor safety, whilst also reducing consumption and noxious emissions.

archive,Tyres,news

Pirelli’s research department, working to reinforce the characteristics of the newest member of the Lamborghini family, developed tyres that contribute to the reduction of environmental impact, with compounds and solutions that decrease rolling resistance, while at the same time taking performance characteristics to the maximum in terms of both safety and handling. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera will use the new PZero Corsa System in the 235/35ZR19 and 295/30ZR19 sizes. The PZero Corsa System combines the front directional tread design with an asymmetric rear design, to decrease susceptibility to hydroplaning, a typical problem when using tyres derived from semi-slick sports designs. The front PZero Corsa directional maintains the previous tread design, however innovative materials and technology choices have been introduced to help balance the increased sportiness of the new asymmetric rear tyres. The new PZero Corsa Asymmetric includes robust blocks and a full shoulder to maximize the performance on dry, even under the most extreme driving conditions. The inclusion of longitudinal channels also allows for the expulsion of water and decreases susceptibility to hydroplaning, despite the reduced tread depth. The new combination of designs and the use of innovative materials derived from Motorsports, allows the new PZero Corsa System to achieve higher levels of performance both on dry and wet surfaces. PZero Corsa System is the best handling road tyre in the PZero collection, the line of Ultra High Performance products developed by Pirelli for the most prestigious and high-performance cars. PZero represents a revolution for the tyre industry, and offers drivers performance without precedence in every aspect: handling, comfort, and safety. This tyre from the P Zero Collection, the line of tyres produced by Pirelli, leader in the high end bracket, uses many innovative solutions developed by Pirelli and protected by 5 patents, which protect the tread design, compounds, and the tyre structure. The racing heart of PZero is guaranteed by the tread compounds and by special nano-composites that ensure comfortable driving combined with extreme sports performance. Additionally, the tread design of Pirelli's new tyre also delivers maximum grip on wet roads and reduces noise. The asymmetric profile DA.Co (Dynamic Asymmetric Contour) gives even wear and tyre-ground contact remains the same at all speeds. Moreover, P Zero is produced with compounds which contain no aromatic oils. Pirelli’s decision on this came three years ahead of the European directive which will enforce this act from 2010. The now well-established collaboration between Pirelli and Lamborghini is not limited to the development of road tyres, but extends to racing and the main events organised by the car maker. In fact, Pirelli is the sole supplier to the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo and the Lamborghini Track Academy.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

It is a revolutionary sensor inserted inside the tyre which, thanks to a special electronic chip, interfaces directly with the other electronic devices used by the car, giving useful information and data for safe and correct driving. The device on which the functioning of the Cyber Tyre is based is a chip just over 1cm3 in size (1cm X 1cm X 1cm), self-powered by a system which exploits the energy released by the turning of the tyre itself (energy scavenging), which also makes it eco-friendly and with low environmental impact, since it needs no batteries.
The sensor has a transceiver which can transmit and receive data. By radio, it can transmit data directly to the car's on-board control unit; data such as the tyre temperature and pressure, and the triaxial acceleration (longitudinal, lateral and radial) generated by the interaction between the tyre and the road surface. It can also receive data from the car itself; data which may be useful for its functioning. The aim is to make the tyre become an “active sensor” at the service of the car’s control systems, such as the ABS and the ESP, with which it will communicate, supplying data and dynamic parameters such as the force of the instantaneous contact and the maximum friction available, in order to improve performance and reduce the need for other sensors present in cars today, allowing for a potential reduction in the cost of the vehicle as a whole. Some of the information will also be directly available to the driver by means of a graphic interface, which can help him to improve his driving style, adapting it to the road conditions and the grip, with a considerable increase in safety.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

Those Cinturato tyres were not only the basis for the evolution of the entire industry, but also for Pirelli research which, with the new Cinturato tyre, combines the principles of environmental protection with those of performance and safety.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

Pirelli Cyber Tyre: the ‘Intelligent Tyre’ that ‘Speaks’ to the Car

<pp:caseid>265111</pp:caseid>

Pirelli, as with the radial ply tyre (Cinturato) in the ‘50s and the low and ultra-low profile radial tyres in the '70s, is trailblazing a new era for tyres: the age of the ‘intelligent tyre’. Thanks to a chip inserted into the carcass, the Cyber Tyre can supply essential information on the state of the tyre and on road conditions to the driver and car, making electronic control of the car more efficient. This innovation, which engineers in Pirelli’s R&D department are currently working on, delivers increased active and passive safety when driving. The partnership between man and technology is becoming closer and closer in the automotive industry, and this means that the tyre is becoming increasingly important for safety, representing, in fact, the only interface between the driver, the car and the road. The particular feature of the ‘intelligent tyre’ is an electronic sensor which can give the on-board computer useful information for safe driving. The sensor is completely self-powered and therefore always charged and with low environmental impact. Materials, electronics, sensor technology and nanotechnologies are the technological frontiers which challenge leading tyre manufactures today. Pirelli, to maintain its competitive advantage in technology, has had collaboration agreements for some time now with prestigious universities (such as: UC Berkeley, Milan Polytechnic, Turin Polytechnic) and with companies that are world leaders in electronics. Pirelli’s new technological and industrial centre at Settimo Torinese will be the first production site for the ‘intelligent tyre’, which will use Mirs 2, the evolution of Mirs (Modular Integrated Robotised System), the exclusive manufacturing system developed by Pirelli. The ‘intelligent tyre’ will be developed in two steps as regards technological evolution, application and availability on the market: the Cyber Tyre Lean and the Cyber Tyre in the strict sense. Cyber Tyre Lean: electronics in the future of tyres The future of the “intelligent tyre” involves the development of the most sophisticated electronic systems. Pirelli technology's latest invention is the Cyber Tyre Lean: a TPMS sensor (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) for monitoring tyre pressure, developed in collaboration with Schrader. Cyber Tyre Lean (CTL) is a circular shaped device hardly bigger than a two-euro coin, applied to the inner liner of the tyre, which gives data on tyre pressure and temperature, the average load on the wheel and the number of revolutions. It is an absolutely innovative product, unique in the world, and it needs no battery: in fact, thanks to technology patented by Pirelli, it is self-powered, obtaining the necessary energy from the mechanical vibrations transmitted to the device from the movement of the tyre itself. The CTL will be on sale within the first months of 2010 and it is the first step in a technological process aimed at creating an “intelligent” tyre, which will inform the vehicle on tyre-road interaction. Cyber Tyre: the intelligent tyre that communicates with the car The development of the sensor which is the basis of the Cyber Tyre Lean represents the first application of electronics to tyres and will also be the starting point for the creation, scheduled for completion within 2012/2013, of the so-called “Cyber Tyre”. The Cyber Tyre will not only be able to supply data on the tyre, but will also be able to "read" the road and will interface directly with other electronic car systems, transmitting further information for safer driving. The tyre itself will act as an electronic “sensor”, interacting with other devices such as the ABS and the ESP, to give information in real time such as, for example, the actual and potential friction coefficients, and the force of contact between tyre and road, thus allowing for optimal and safe control of the car. The system will be based on an electronic sensor inserted inside the tyre, just over 1cm3 in size, which will transmit by wireless technology all the data relative to the tyre and will also communicate signals coming from the road, directly to the on-board computer: a sort of miniature “black box” which will be able not only to supply the driver with useful information but also to receive data directly from the car's other electronic devices. The information can then be sent to the car itself by means of the transceiver inside the sensor, and allow the driver to correct his style of driving. The Cyber Tyre will first be developed for high performance cars, but in a few years' time it will also be available for small and medium powered cars, following the logic now common to all systems which aim to improve safety on the roads. Technology partnership Cyber Tyre's research and development is at the centre of a technology collaboration agreement between Pirelli, Brembo and Magneti Marelli. Cyber Tyre will be integrated into Magneti Marelli's electronic control systems and Brembo's advanced braking systems. The know-how and skills of the three Italian groups, recognized at the international level, will allow important synergies to be realized as well as the development of applications, particularly in the field of vehicle safety, aimed to reduce vehicle environmental impact, in line with the progress of international regulations and the European Union's new limits on C02 emissions, scheduled to come into force in 2012.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

The PZero collection is confirmed by the new super cars as their preferred line of tyre

Cinturato family, recognized by the leading European certification bodies as the most ecological and safest line of tyres on the market; the PZero family, confirmed as the favourite for high performance sports cars. And so it was, yet again, that Pirelli conquered the Frankfurt Show, where the Milan-based group stood above the stands of the most prestigious cars and on the most eagerly-awaited models of the German show.

Green performance and safety. Dekra, one of the automobile sector's leading independent certification bodies, and TÜV, the German certification body, agree that the Cinturato P6 and the Cinturato P7 are the tyres that best match the needs of reducing the environmental impact of vehicle traffic, and of increasing safety. From independently conducted tests, Cinturato P7 was clearly the best ecological tyre in its category, thanks to reduced fuel consumption and hence reduced carbon monoxide emissions due to the better mileage, and to the maximum levels of safety, particularly in the wet and dry. Cinturato P6, as well as seeing its ecological features confirmed in terms of savings and higher mileage, was the safest tyre in its category in all the tests performed: aquaplaning, roadholding and braking on both dry and wet surfaces. The most prestigious European certification bodies confirm the success of Pirelli’s commitment to Green Performance, that is to say the reduction of consumption and environmental impact, increasing at the same time performance connected with safety. In particular, the P7 – launched this year and aimed at the medium- and high-end range – adds features associated with pure performance: comfort, driving pleasure, handling on bends and straight roads, precision on approaches to bends. The Cinturato P7 cuts rolling resistance by 20% and energy consumption by 4%, knocks 30% off noise levels and reduces braking distance by up to two metres both in wet and dry conditions, using materials free of highly aromatic oils. Features which have made it, up to now, the preferred tyre for car makers’ new products. Today, Cinturato P7 has been chosen for original fitting by Audi (A4, A4 Allroad, A5), Mercedes (E Class, S Class), Alfa Romeo (New 147), BMW (X1, Serie 1, Serie 3) and Volvo (S80, V70), for the newest and most prestigious models of the E class, a number of which were also present at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The P6 is destined for a target of cars with small and medium-sized engines. Launched last year, Cinturato P6 is the first renewed tyre in the Pirelli brand's history, designed to guarantee ecology, energy saving and safety and greeted with favourably by the market and specialists alike. The Cinturato P6 guarantees the maximum safety in all weather conditions. In particular, it preserves roadholding on bends and in the wet, and above all reduces braking distance, guaranteeing maximum safety for the smallest cars. Pure performance. Pirelli is confirmed as the ideal partner for the most eagerly-anticipated sports cars at the Show. In the spotlight at the German event is the P Zero collection, an Ultra High Performance product line developed by Pirelli for the most prestigious and high-performance cars. At Frankfurt this year, there was a contest between two super cars which replicate the challenge of the race track on the stands and on the road: the new Ferrari 458 Italia, a synthesis of technological innovation, creativity and Italian style and the McLaren MP4 12 C, the latest creation by the British manufacturer, which is distinguished by an even more streamlined profile. A challenge of beauty, power and technology which finds the right partner in Pirelli PZero, the most advanced product of the PZero collection, innovative in its compounds, structure and tread pattern, chosen right from the launch on the market by all the high-performance sports cars. “Made in Italy” was also represented by the Maserati-Pirelli partnership. In fact, under the spotlights of the Motor Show even the three flagships of the Maserati stable, Quattroporte, Granturismo and Grancabrio, came fitted for the occasion with Pirelli PZero tyres. Pirelli PZero also for Lamborghini. On show at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Murcielago will be fitted with PZero Corsa tyres. Designed with two different tread patterns, P Zero Corsa is the sportiest tyre in the P Zero collection, designed to guarantee total grip on bends, under acceleration and braking. These features make it ideal for the racetrack and on the road in the most demanding conditions. Finally, PZero tyre also for Gallardo and Gallardo Spider, the punchiest variant of the Lamborghini family. PZero also on the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, the Lotus Evora, the Bentley CTC, the SuperSport, the GT Speed, and the new Mulsanne. P Zero Rosso, instead, for the Swedish Volvo and Saab cars present at the Show: Volvo XC 60, Volvo S80 Executive and Saab 9-3X chose the Ultra High Performance variant of the PZero, which combines sportiness with extraordinary acoustic comfort thanks to the new tread pattern. At the Frankfurt Show there’s also room for the Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico, which will be fitted on the Volvo XC 70 and XC 60 “R design”.

archive,Tyres,Company,news

Leaving the expanse of red earth of the city of Perth, the new race will be held on the east coast of the Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales. The road surface is mixed gravel track with stones: for the occasion the Pirelli technicians will supply Scorpion in the hard compound variant. This is the version developed by the Italian Group to guarantee maximum performance and versatility on gravel tracks and which responds to the eco-compatibility requirements set by the organizer and the Australian government, which has always been particularly aware of these issues. It should be noted that all Scorpion tyres use aromatic oil free compounds, in advance with respect to the legislation which starting in 2010 will come into force also in Europe. So, with its new route, Rally Australia has everything it needs to become the ideal "terrain" for Pirelli Scorpion tyres. The Australian rally will not see the young Pirelli Star Drivers in action, but will instead be the scene of the shoot-out valid for selection of the Pirelli Star Driver 2010 for the Asia Pacific area. There will in fact be ten young talents, from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and Malaysia, who will fight it out at Kingscliff to win one of the five Mitsubishi Evo Xs with which next year, the winners, will tackle 6 WRC events completely sponsored by Pirelli and the FIA.

archive,Tyres,Company,Motorsport,news

Rally Finland, which is also known as the 'Finnish Grand Prix' is the fastest and most spectacular event of the season, putting huge demands on the crews, cars and tyres.The Rally Finland is characterised by flat-out gravel roads and huge crests that launch the cars into the air. Although the weather was largely warm, some overnight rain meant that the road conditions were mixed, making Finland a true challenge for the soft-compound Pirelli Scorpion rubber. These tyres will be used once more for the season-closing Rally Great Britain at the end of the year. Just as was the case last year, Rally Finland witnessed an epic duel between the Ford of Mikko Hirvonen and the Citroen of five-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb, both on Pirelli Scorpion tyres. However, this time it was the Ford driver who triumphed after their three-day long battle, winning 10 stages en route to his first Rally Finland victory. Hirvonen now enjoys a three-point lead over Loeb in the drivers' championship rankings, while Citroen has a 14-point advantage over Ford, with just three rallies remaining. Despite the rapid roads and varying weather conditions, which peaked at 33 degrees,the soft-compound Pirelli Scorpion gravel tyres stood up extremely well to the challenge. None of the leading runners reported any major problems with punctures, in spite of some stones that emerged through the ruts during the second passage over the stages. "Everything has worked really well, the notes, the car and the tyres," said Hirvonen at the finish in Jyvaskyla. "The rally went exactly as planned. It was a really close battle and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. This is a rally that I have dreamed about winning since I was a child, so to finally achieve it is fantastic!" The Junior World Rally Championship, which also uses Pirelli tyres, was decided in Finland after Czech driver Martin Prokop took a dominant victory at the wheel of his Citroen C2 S1600. The result means that Prokop can now not be beaten to the Junior title on the final round in Spain. "I could maybe have sealed it just by taking two reasonable results here and in Spain," said Prokop. "But instead I tried to push my hardest here - and so we won the title!" Pirelli's Rally Manager Mario Isola commented: "We have been very pleased by the performance of our tyres on what is certainly one of the toughest events of the year. The sustained high speeds and big jumps mean that our tyres are constantly subjected to extreme forces: especially the sidewalls that have to bear the load when the cars land. Despite these very challenging conditions, we are pleased to report that none of the leading runners experienced any problems directly related to the tyres at all. Even in cases where the tyre was knocked off the rim due to an impact with a rock, the tyre stayed up and enabled drivers to complete the stage with minimal damage. Now we look forward to the next rally, in Australia, which will be a brand new event for us and no doubt present a completely different type of challenge."

archive,Tyres,Motorsport,news

Pirelli will partner the drivers and teams with the soft version of their Scorpion tyres, developed to guarantee performance and safety on treacherous terrain. Pirelli Scorpion Soft will make its presence felt in the World Rally Championship's next race in Finland, that takes place in the striking setting of the Lake Region. The Neste Oil Rally Finland WRC, one of the season's most popular rallies, begins on 31 July and ends on 2 August and presents many interesting aspects for the drivers and the enthusiastic public. The dynamic course and treacherous road surface mean high speeds and big jumps. For the occasion, Pirelli's technicians will be bringing the soft version of the Scorpion, the tyre specifically developed by the Italian company to guarantee the highest performance and safety on smooth terrain and mud. The Pirelli Star Drivers will be taking part in the Rally Finland and it will also be recognised as a qualifying rally for the 2010 Pirelli Star Driver competition: 5 young drivers will be selected from 8 North European countries to enter the programme's European shootout, to take place in Freistadt, Austria in mid-September. Similar to the European selection process, the young contenders will be judged not only on their technical capacity and speed, but also on their ability to present themselves and relate to the media, proving themselves, in short, well-rounded drivers. The materials used to create the Scorpion intended for the World Rally Championship represent the latest innovation in terms of resistance. The Scorpion has been designed with "run flat" technology solutions which, as well as reducing the risk of a puncture to a minimum, let the driver finish the race without losing excessive time and without damaging the car's mechanics or bodywork. The Scorpion Soft was also chosen for the recent Rally Poland, one of the season's most exciting races.

archive,Tyres,news

The 200mm qualifying tyre is unique to Monza being equal in measurement, profile and structure to Pirelli's race tyre solutions for this circuit, whose compound gives riders the confidence to make the fastest lap. As a way of offering spectators and presenters a way of identifying what is happening during Superpole, non-permanent white "long P" markings and yellow lines have been imprinted on the tyre's surface.

Giorgio Barbier commented, "We continue to put forth significant efforts in developing additional tyre options available to every rider of the Superbike and Supersport grid, and we are satisfied with all the results, including this new qualifying tyre which guarantees more excitement and visibility into the strategies of each team during Superpole for all spectators, both live and on television."

Pirelli has achieved significant improvements in race and lap times in the first four rounds of the 2009 season with an average decrease in overall race time of the three podium positions of 11 seconds in Race 1 and 13 seconds in Race 2. Lap times in race scenario have decreased significantly at various tracks such as Assen, where an average of three individual riders' best lap times during the race dropped by 0.63 seconds in Race 1 and 0.78 seconds in Race 2, resulting in a new lap record for the circuit. Thus far this season, nearly 14 different solutions have been made available to the Superbike grid, including two different rains and one intermediate solution.

With the Monza race, the Superbike World Championship is preparing to enter the most competitive part of the season. Four classes fill one large paddock, but this certainly means the weekend will be filled with passion and adrenaline at the race closest to the home of Pirelli. To the Monza race, Pirelli will bring 3 front and 4 rear dry solutions, of which one front and 3 rears are brand new to this circuit, many thanks to the winter testing and individual input from teams who declare Monza as their test facility.

<pp:caseid>264468</pp:caseid>

Villa Carlos Paz, 26 April, 2009 - Citroen's five-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb has claimed his fifth victory from five rallies on the 2009 season so far using Pirelli tyres. The Rally Argentina, the only round of this year's WRC to be held in South America, encompassed a wide variety of surfaces and weather conditions, making it a truly formidable challenge for the soft-compound Pirelli Scorpion rubber.
As always, Rally Argentina contained two of the best known stages on the entire World Rally Championship: Giulio Cesare and El Condor, run this year on the second day of the event. After seven changes of leader on the opening day, Loeb took advantage of a better road position on the second day to move clear of the field. On the final day, the Pirelli-equipped Citroen driver was able to control his winning margin and claim his 52nd career victory ahead of his team mate Dani Sordo and Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala. Loeb's win now gives him a 19-point lead over Sordo in the drivers' championship while Citroen now extends his lead over Ford in the manufacturers' rankings to 39 points.

A particularly dry summer in Argentina meant that a number of roads were already in bad condition before the rally started, with the surface degrading considerably during the second run over the stages. The crews faced mostly dry and dusty roads on the opening day of the rally but conditions worsened over the weekend with rain coming on Saturday and forming deep ruts in the stages.

Despite the enormously varying roads and weather conditions, which ranged from less than 10 to more than 25 degrees Centigrade, the soft-compound Pirelli Scorpion gravel tyres - of the sort that will also be used in Finland and Great Britain - stood up extremely well to the challenge.

None of the leading runners reported any major problems with punctures, in spite of the notoriously sharp rocks that littered the route, enabling a four-way fight for the lead on the opening day. Pirelli's Scorpion rubber also enabled the privateer Citroen Xsara WRC of former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg to join the battle for the podium before he encountered mechanical problems.

"The grip was changing a lot, particularly on the opening day when I was running first on the road," reported Loeb. "Despite these changing conditions though, I found enough consistency from my Pirelli tyres to stay in the hunt. On the second day it was a little easier as I was further back - although I still had a couple of moments! I'm naturally very pleased to claim my fifth win in Argentina and I'd like to thank everyone - including Pirelli - who made it possible."

Argentina was also a round of the Junior World Rally Championship and Production Car World Rally Championship, which are also exclusively supplied by Pirelli. After a three-way fight the Junior category was eventually won by Suzuki driver Michal Kosciuszko, who overcame a broken steering arm on the opening day to triumph. Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah claimed the Production Car World Rally Championship category in his Subaru, ahead of local hero Marcos Ligato.

Pirelli's Motorsport Director Paul Hembery commented: "On what were some of the most difficult and mixed conditions that we will face all year, we were very pleased with both the performance and reliability of our tyres. The fantastic battle for the lead that we all enjoyed on the opening day underlines just how well the soft-compound Pirelli rubber works on a variety of different cars with different drivers. The second day in particular contained a number of very sharp rocks, yet the renowned strength of the Scorpion tyre ensured that all the leading runners got through some of the most challenging stages of the year unscathed."

archive,Tyres,Motorcycle tyres,news

This rally is a demanding challenge that Pirelli technicians are ready to cope with supporting teams and drivers also on the basis of the experience gained last year when the rally was characterized by pouring rains and muddy surfaces that made the stages even more difficult.

This year the Rally of Argentina should have better climatic conditions also thanks to the decision to move the event one month later. In any case the rally remains a difficult one and Pirelli will supply teams with the soft version of the Scorpion, the tyre ensuring excellent performance levels on soft and muddy terrains.

The materials used for the Pirelli Scorpions destined to the WRC represent the maximum innovation in terms of resistance. Moreover Pirelli Scorpion adopts "run flat" technology solutions that besides reducing to the minimum the risk of punctures during the rally, allows to complete the special stages without significant delay and without damaging the car mechanics and bodywork. Pirelli Scorpions will ensure safety and performance at Rally Argentina, well known among rally enthusiasts for its mix of high speed and bumpy surfaces.

The young Pirelli Star Drivers will not be at the start of the southamerican rally. Pirelli Star Driver is the programme promoted by Pirelli in collaboration with the FIA in order to promote and support new rally talents. After the debut event in Portugal, the young drivers will compete again in Sardinia at Rally of Italy.

archive,Tyres,Motorcycle tyres,news

(Attached 1)

P Zero is the ultra high performance tyre created by Pirelli to guarantee maximum performance to the most demanding drivers in terms of sports execution, safety and comfort. This special tyre has obtained 9 victories out of 10 in the most severe and prestigious international tests in 2008 and 2009. (Attached 2)

Winter Sottozero Series II is the Pirelli winter tyre par excellence. It is designed to guarantee extreme performance in difficult weather conditions and, in particular, in the presence of wet asphalt and minimal outdoor temperatures.

Attached 1 - Pirelli P Zero Family

The P Zero collection, which this year includes a new product for super sports cars, is Pirelli's Ultra High Performance family developed for the more performing cars and for the most demanding drivers, who seek driving pleasure together with safety.
Created in 1987, the P Zero family dominates the high end segment, in which Pirelli is the recognised world leader. Comfort, high performance and reliability are the features of the P Zero product, the favourite original equipment tyres for the top models from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi, Aston Martin, Maserati, Bentley, Jaguar, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, Porsche and BMW, with whom Pirelli has always worked.

The P Zero series (launched in 2007) includes the P Zero Nero, the P Zero Rosso, for normal sports cars, and the P Zero Corsa System, for the even faster racing type cars. P Zero is also one of the tyres developed by Pirelli for the 2009 world rally championships, for which the Milan company is the exclusive supplier until 2010. Not by chance, the production of tyres deriving from experience on the race tracks and the competition field is the element that characterises all the P Zero products.

P Zero. The most recent of the family, which in less than one year has become a reference point for the most performing sports cars. The new P Zero is the most technologically advanced product of Pirelli research, and offers the most demanding drivers performances without precedence from all aspects: performance, comfort and safety, thanks to a range of innovative solutions developed by Pirelli and protected by 5 exclusive patents. With an innovative tread pattern, futuristic compounds and a renewed structure.

P Zero Rosso. An Ultra High Performance tyre designed to combine fast driving performance with low noise thanks to the asymmetric design with wide longitudinal grooves and a tread divided laterally into three separate elements, each conceived to confer particular performance features.

P Zero Nero. A tyre with an asymmetrical tread which can guarantee maximum driving safety in every situation, ensuring excellent grip on dry and wet roads, excellent handling, high resistance to aquaplaning and maximum efficiency when braking.

P Zero Corsa. The sports model of the P Zero family, designed with two different treads: asymmetrical and directional. The total adherence on curves, in acceleration and braking make this particularly suitable for the race track, as well as on roads in extreme driving conditions.

Attached 2 - Winter Sottozero II

Safety and performance on all roads and in all weather conditions typical of the cold season, without neglecting respect for the environment and reduced consumption. These are the features of the new seasonal Pirelli tyre family, which was extended last year with the Winter Sottozero Series II and to which a new entry will also be added this year, in pursuit of continually updating the product range in order to satisfy the increasingly more segmented and challenging requests of motorists and of car manufacturers.

Winter Sottozero Series II, in particular, is the high performance winter tyre developed to cater for the needs of the more demanding drivers, which can detect and adapt to all road conditions typical of the autumn and winter months. The features of the new Pirelli tyre are safety and respect for the environment, thanks to the combination of many technological innovations, which can guarantee fast driving and reliability not only on snow or ice, but also on roads that are wet, muddy, slippery or just extremely cold, typical of the winter season.

Two versions with record approval. The new Pirelli winter tyre represents the evolution of the Winter Sottozero, which has already enjoyed 5 years of success on the European market, and has been produced in two different versions according to the speed of the cars: the W210/W240 version for high performance cars, and the even more extreme W270, designed for super sports models. Porsche, Maserati, Lamborghini, Ferrari, BMW, Bentley, Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo have already chosen the new Pirelli winter tyre, approving it as original equipment.

The intelligent tread that adapts to the road. The two versions of the Winter Sottozero Series II have many technological innovations in common, some patented, which distinguish them as a family of products that can revolutionise the traditional meaning of a winter tyre: no longer a snow tyre, but a seasonal tyre, suitable for all weather and road conditions found from October to April throughout Europe. The compounds are innovative: eco-friendly, being free of aromatic oils and with a reduced content of heavy metals, and versatile since they combine and optimize the features of compounds for both wet and icy roads, to give improved performance on wet surfaces at all normal winter temperatures, i.e. below 7°C.
The structure is also innovative: it reproduces in a winter tyre the performance features typical of the P Zero Pirelli, the tyre with extremely high performance chosen by all the main car builders in the world for their sports cars and for their more recent models.
The tread pattern is innovative, too: it allows the tyre to adapt to the road and to ensure safety and pleasant driving in all conditions, thanks to a system of indentations and a design composed of mobile blocks, like small bricks, which move and grip on the diverse road surfaces. With Winter Sottozero Series II, the phenomenon of aquaplaning is reduced and traction, lateral grip and hold when braking are significantly increased.

archive,Tyres,news
