The Italian tyre brand sets the stage in Jerez for the Pirelli Spanish Round with two new front solutions, one for WorldSBK and one for WorldSSP600

Pirelli is the Event Main Sponsor for the last time in 2017, which will see the titles awarded in WorldSSP300 and STK1000 classes and, perhaps, in WorldSSP600

From Friday 20 to Sunday 22 October 2017 Pirelli will be engaged in the penultimate round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at the Spanish circuit of Jerez de la Frontera.

Jerez will in fact be the last event for the racers of the WorldSSP300 and STK1000 classes, who will not attend the series finale at Qatar so this race will therefore be decisive for the assignment of the titles and in some cases, for the Manufacturers Standings. Pirelli therefore decided to be the Event Main Sponsor of this important round, which for the occasion is renamed the Pirelli Spanish Round.

With the main WorldSBK class assigned to Jonathan Rea for the third consecutive year, attention has shifted to the minor classes which throughout the year have often demonstrated a greater level of competitiveness than the main class, offering fans spectacular and very hard fought races. In the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship there is a battle between two Yamaha riders, Marc García (Halcourier Racing) and Alfonso Coppola (SK Racing), with the Spanish racer currently leading the general rankings, with 4 points over the Italian. In the FIM Superstock 1000 European Championship, there are three racers still in the hunt for the title: Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing - Junior Team), current Championship leader with 128 points, Florian Marino (PATA Yamaha Official STK 1000 Team) following with 120 and Turkish Toprak Razgatlıoğlu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) with a 14-point gap from first.

There is a different situation in the FIM Supersport World Championship which is headed to Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) followed by Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and, third, from Sheridan Morais (Kallio Racing). With the Turkish star out of the game because a bad accident at Magny-Cours, the only one able to challenge the Frenchman remains the other Yamaha rider, South African Morais. There is a 32-point gap but with 50 points remaining in the stakes, Morais remains potentially in the game for the World title. Everything is to be decided in the Manufacturer Championship with Yamaha driving the standings with 216 points, 25 more than Kawasaki.

 

As for the tyres, Pirelli will have to face a circuit which it knows well but with the unknown factor of completely new asphalt since the track re-paving works were completed in late summer. For this reason, Pirelli will provide riders with both standard and development solutions which have been used in the past, with the exception of two new front options, one for the WorldSBK class and one for WorldSSP600. Then for the main class, the specification W0418 is a development of the standard SC3 just differing within the construction process. In Supersport, the specification W0379, is an alternative to the standard SC2. In both cases, these solutions should offer greater protection against the abrasion that could be present within the new asphalt.

The circuit of Jerez de la Frontera was inaugurated in December 1985 and since then has become one of the most appreciated circuits for riders. In 1992, renovation and modernization work was started to improve safety with particular modifications to the Pons Curve and Senna chicane, bringing the length of the lap to 4223 metres. Ten years later, in 2002, some extensive restructuring efforts were made to the overall complex, such as pit lane lengthening and the construction of surfaced run-off areas. Two months ago, the circuit was completely resurfaced after nearly 10 years since the last alteration occurred in 2008. The circuit of Jerez presents a varied composition, with long straights – equal to 69% of the circuit – and slow corners alternating with quick sections. The finish straight, which is 600 metres long, has a width equal to 12 metres, slightly wider than the rest of the track, where the width is 11 metres. As well as the structure, also the curvature radius is variable, ranging from 30 to 116 metres, while the maximum gradient is 5% out of Turn 5. There are several slopes with the maximum of 7.46% out of Turn 2, 6 and 13, while the minimum is 4.70% out of Turn 4 and 12.

 
The solutions for WorldSBK and WorldSSP classes

5175 tyres will be brought to Jerez de la Frontera for the penultimate 2017 round, the last one which will see in action the riders from all the four classes in the Championship.

In WorldSBK there will be seven choices for dry, four front and three rear solutions. In addition to the slicks for the races, those who go through to the second Superpole® session will always count on the rear qualifier tyre, in this case the W0692 solution already seen in action at Portimão and Magny-Cours.

For the front, Pirelli offers both standard and development solutions: in addition to the standard SC1 (soft) and SC2 (medium), racers will rely on the development SC1 V0952, which uses the same compound of the standard SC1 but has different structural solutions. Also available is the new solution W0418, a development of the standard SC3 to which it shares the same compound but with a different construction process which could be very effective on the new surface at Jerez.

At the rear there will be one soft compound option and two in medium compound. The soft development solution W0576 has already been introduced in Laguna Seca and Magny-Cours rounds as an alternative to the standard SC0. In addition, there will be the standard SC1, which offers a medium hardness of the compound which is positioned halfway between the soft and hard solution and, as an alternative, the development SC1 W0051, already used in Motorland Aragón, Assen and Lausitzring, which uses a different compound than the standard solution to ensure a more consistent wear and grip level.

The WorldSSP pilots there will also be seven options for dry, but of course in treaded tyres For the front there are four options: in addition to the standard SC1 and SC2, two development solutions: the SC1 W0378, which uses the same compound as the standard SC1, and the SC2 W0379 which uses the same compound as the standard SC2. Both solutions have a different construction process than the standard solutions. At the rear of the standard SC0 (soft) and SC1 (medium) solutions will complement the development SC1 U0563 already used this year in Assen and which, compared to the standard SC1, should offer greater firmness and therefore a greater resistance to cold tearing, especially in the case of particularly low temperatures.
