Jeffrey Herlings and Thomas Kjer Olsen own MXGP and MX2 for their first career victories while Antonio Cairoli regains the red plate in MXGP and Pauls Jonass consolidates the top spot in MX2
The
Grand Prix of Latvia represented the seventh round of the
2017 FIM Motocross World Championship season and was hosted by the
‘Zelta Zirgs’ circuit in
Kegums. All
Pirelli riders used the
SCORPION™ MX SOFT rear and the SCORPION™ MX32™ MID SOFT front; the tyres which - thanks to their versatility - proved to be perfect on the shallow sandy soil with a hard base and led to a monopoly of the podium in
MXGP and the overall victory in
MX2.

Jeffrey Herlings finally shook off the physical problems that slowed him down in the first races of the season. The Dutch rider was fast throughout the weekend winning the qualifying heat and both races to grab his first ever victory in
MXGP. Second place belonged to
Antonio Cairoli who, despite two unlucky starts, managed to return to the top of the championship standings with seventeen points over
Tim Gajser. The reigning world champion was unlucky in
Kegums and was forced to retire in the second moto after a bad fall.
Evgeny Bobryshev performed well and finished the Grand Prix on the third step of the podium.
Gautier Paulin closed the top five of the day in
MXGP.

It was a memorable day for
Thomas Kjer Olsen in
MX2. The rookie won a moto for the first time and took the Grand Prix ‘overall’ in Kegums as well as third position in the championship standing.
Pauls Jonass was second at his home race and has consolidated his lead in the championship over
Jeremy Seewer. The Swiss rider, after a great second place in the first moto, was forced to retire in the second after a crash. Good performances were made by young riders
Jorge Prado and
Conrad Mewsein fourth and fifth place overall.
