In Argentina Scott Redding wins WorldSBK Race 2, victory for Jules Cluzel in WorldSSP but the Supersport championship title goes to Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter

On Sunday afternoon of the WorldSBK Argentinean Round, the Ducati rider was unbeatable, whereas the championship title will have to wait until Indonesia.

A spectacular show and overtaking from start to finish: the Pirelli tyres allow high level racing and new race records in every category

Today on the Argentinean San Juan Villicum circuit the competition was once more extremely high-level, chock full of overtaking and surprises that kept the fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Toprak Razgatlioglu took the Tissot Superpole Race in the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship, whereas Scott Redding triumphed in a spectacular Race 2. Rounding out the podium this afternoon was Jonathan Rea in second place ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu. The riders in the running for the world championship title will be leaving Argentina just thirty points from one another and the fate of the WorldSBK Championship will be decided at the finale in Indonesia.

The WorldSSP category, on the other hand, crowned Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) 2021 World Supersport Champion, whereas Jules Cluzel took home a brace, finishing Race 2 on the top step of the podium as well.

Also present on Sunday at the WorldSBK Argentinean Round were Cesar Alarcon, CEO and Executive Vice President of Pirelli in South America, and Mauricio Canineo, CEO of Pirelli in Argentina. Their visit to the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship paddock took place following the celebration of Pirelli’s 111th anniversary on Argentinean soil where, for the occasion, the Milan-based company launched the country’s first motorcycle tyre production line.

WorldSBK Tissot Superpole Race:

Championship leader Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) had the best start of all the riders, taking the lead ahead of pole man Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R), Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), who gained two positions from the fifth spot on the grid, Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing / Ducati Panigale V4 R). The Italian managed to gain the upper hand against the Kawasaki rider, moving into fourth position and setting off to chase down the reigning World Champion. Scott Redding, who set the new race record on the sixth lap with an impressive time of 1'38.052, became threatening during the final two laps, but without managing to overtake for the win. The race ended in a photo finish: Razgatlioglu first, Redding just half a tenth behind the Yamaha and third place for Jonathan Rea.

WorldSBK Race 2:

It was a battle right from the start for the trio made up of Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1)Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) and Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) who fought tooth and nail for the top step of the podium, overtaking on corners and grabbing slipstreams on the straights. The top three positions continued to change hand back and forth between the Yamaha, Kawasaki and Ducati riders, ahead of Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing / Ducati Panigale V4 R), who challenged the third-place rider several times, and Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team / BMW M 1000 RR). At the mid-race point, Redding snatched the lead definitively, pulling away at the front ahead of Razgatlioglu and Rea, who battled it out for second place and the title of 2021 WorldSBK Champion. Jonathan Rea managed to overtake Razgatlioglu and make it stick six laps from the end, building up a bit of a buffer to clinch his second-place finish. Redding remained uncatchable and, when the chequered flag came out, he finished first with a two and a half second advantage ahead of Rea and with third place going to the current championship leader Razgatlioglu.

WorldSSP Race 2:

At 1:30 in the afternoon local time, before WorldSBK Race 2, the third-to-last race of the FIM Supersport World Championship started. Frenchman Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6), after taking pole position on Saturday, started well and maintained the lead from flag to flag. On the first corner, an accident forced Manuel Gonzalez (Yamaha ParkinGo Team / Yamaha YZF R6) and Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team / Yamaha YZF R6) – the latter in the running for the championship title – to re-join the race in last place. Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R), lying second, challenged the race leader throughout, never letting him pull away, whereas behind him in third position was Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6), leader in the overall championship standings. Due to a crash six laps from the end, any hope Steven Odendaal may have been holding out for the world title slipped away in Argentina and he handed the 2021 WorldSSP World Champion title to Aegerter. In the early part of the race, Jules Cluzel set a new record before finishing first ahead of Oncu and Aegerter.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the riders for the WorldSBK and WorldSSP races:

In the WorldSBK Tissot Superpole Race, the entire grid chose to race on standard SC1 tyres (option A) at the front and standard SCX tyres (option A) at the rear with the exception of Tito Rabat who preferred the medium SC2 solution (option B) for the front.

In Race 2, most of the riders confirmed the choices they had made for Race 1. Jonathan Rea and Tito Rabat preferred the medium compound standard SC2 solution (option B) at the front, whereas the rest of the grid confirmed the soft standard SC1 solution (option A). On the other hand, all the riders used the standard SCX (option A) where the rear tyre was concerned.

In the WorldSSP race, rider choice was unanimous for both the front and the rear. In fact, at the front, all the riders used the standard SC1 (option A), whereas at the rear, all used the standard SCX (option A).
