New fiber optic highway in Australia
Milan, 30th November 2001 - Pirelli Telecom Cables and Systems Australia Pty Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of the international Pirelli Group has finalised a deal that sees it as the majority supplier of optical cable for the Amcom IP1 project from Melbourne to Perth via Adelaide and Kalgoorlie.
The deal valued at AU$ 23million involves the supply of approximately 3,900 km of fibre optic cable. The cable is a hybrid design incorporating a combination of both G.652 singlemode and G.655 Non Zero Dispersion fibres that provide a future upgrade path to 40Gb/s and greater operation. The majority of the G.655 fibre being supplied is Pirelli FreeLight™ that is manufactured in Pirelli's own state of the art facility, Fibre Ottiche Sud, based in the south of Italy.
A combination of cable types are being provided to satisfy the harsh environmental conditions experienced along the route and Pirelli has been working closely together with the installer, NDC Limited, to deliver the best solution in this respect.
" The project was won against some stiff competition," said Llyr Roberts, Pirelli's Telecoms Business Unit Manger, " but we have been pleased to work with the Amcom IP1 team since this is a strategic opportunity with a sound business plan" .
Pirelli has already delivered the first section of cable between Melbourne and Adelaide against some very tight time schedules to satisfy the aggressive installation programme that is expected to see the complete link in operation by August 2002.
