Pirelli awarded HV contract in Vienna

  • PIRELLI AWARDED EXTRA HIGH VOLTAGE CABLE CONTRACT IN VIENNA
  • NEW UNDERGROUND POWER LINKS WILL EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN VIENNA POWER GRID
  • CABLE INSTALLATION MARKS A FIRST IN AUSTRIA FOR TECHNOLOGICAL EXCELLENCE
  • THE PROJECT FURTHER CONFIRMS THE LEADERSHIP OF PIRELLI IN THE ENERGY CABLES SECTOR

Milan,15 January 2004 - Pirelli has been awarded a contract by the electricity company Wienstrom GmbH to expand and strengthen the power transmission grid of the city of Vienna with the provision of new extra high voltage (EHV) underground cable connections.

The contract involves the complete turn-key installation of two 380kV underground cable links connecting existing overhead lines in the outskirts of Vienna to the inner city.

This project will be performed over the next two years and will include the supply and installation of over 30km of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated EHV power cables - among the world's most technologically advanced - and all related cable accessories.

Over the last decades Pirelli has supplied the majority of the 380kV fluid filled cable traditionally used in Vienna . This longstanding relationship with Wienstrom now continues with their decision to use XLPE cable for this project, a first both in Vienna and in Austria at this voltage level.

Pirelli expertise has enabled the design of a cable system tailored to meet Wienstrom's specifications implementing engineered solutions to fulfill both the particular environmental requirements as well as foreseeing a cooling system which allows for future demands of increased power transmission.

The project further confirms the world leadership of Pirelli in the energy cable sector emphasizing in particular, Pirelli as the optimal partner for power companies planning new high voltage power links, both underground and submarine, as witnessed by recent contracts awarded in Spain , Tunisia and Australia .
