Pirelli champions ready for Rallylegend: one of the most star-studded rally festivals in the world

Rallylegend attracts in excess of 60,000 spectators

Italian tyre firm Pirelli – which has been involved in the World Rally Championship since the series began in 1973 – will supply tyres to one of the biggest and most innovative festivals of historic rallying in the world, attracting in excess of 60,000 spectators. This weekend the Rallylegend show takes place in San Marino, with Pirelli supplying all the tyres to the competing cars, which showcase the golden era of rallying as well as more modern machinery. Among the star names that will be seen at the Rallylegend show are two-time world champion Miki Biasion and four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen: both title-winners on Pirelli tyres. There are also a number of themed exhibitions during the show, such as ‘When Alitalia Flew’ – chronicling the years when Italy’s national airline sponsored cars from Fiat and Lancia – and ‘GTI: 40 years of fun’, celebrating the Volkswagen Golf. One more 40-year celebration is in honour of the Fiat 131: another Pirelli-equipped rally icon. Having supported the Rallylegend show in its early years, Pirelli makes a welcome return as a key partner this year, supplying tyres in three categories of the competition: Historic, Myth, and World Rally Car. Pirelli will also offer the ‘jump in the legend” prizes, for the three best jumps throughout the four-day event, awarded in different categories and selected by a jury. Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “Rallylegend is a fantastic initiative and I’m delighted that Pirelli is involved once more. As a company we have an illustrious history in rallying, and on a personal note rallying is actually what got me into motorsport. I’ll never forget the sight of a Pirelli-liveried Lancia Stratos on the stages, when I was growing up, so it’s fantastic to see these amazing cars in action again with some star drivers.” Pirelli will bring a variety of products for both modern and classic rally cars to the Rallylegend show, including the P Zero – as seen on the World Rally Championship – and the P7 Corsa Classic: a versatile tyre for historic rally cars that combines classic looks with modern technology. Gilles Panizzi, one of the most successful drivers in the history of the Sanremo Rally, is another star name to participate, with a Peugeot 306 Maxi. He will be joined by Subaru driver Alister McRae – the brother of the legendary Colin, who won the 1995 world rally title on Pirelli tyres – and British star Russell Brookes, in a Talbot Sunbeam.
