Pirelli: Euro 16 million contract

The contract, worth above Euro 16 million, will contribute to the diffusion of " clean" energy in Northern Europe

Milan, January 24th 2002 - Pirelli Energy Cables and Systems announced today to have been awarded by SEAS Group, the largest consumer-owned energy group in Denmark, a contract to link with a submarine energy system the Danish coast to one of the world's largest offshore windmill park, located 11,2 kilometres out at sea of Sealand Island.

The contract with the SEAS Group is worth above Euro 16 million and will significantly contribute to the diffusion of " clean" energy in Denmark, a country at the forefront in studying and implementing alternative techniques for power generation.

The contract involves the turn-key supply and installation of a 132 kiloVolt High Voltage interconnection submarine system linking the coast to one of the world's largest offshore windmill park, Nysted at Rdsand. The windpark will consist of 72 wind turbines, 110 metres high, located 11.2 km offshore.

According to the contract with the SEAS Group, Pirelli will supply and install a total of 21.5 km of one of the largest three core, extruded, AC submarine power cables existing on the market today. The cable will transmit the electricity generated offshore into the SEAS grid that currently supplies about 230,000 customers.

The importance of this contract goes further the mere economic value. Offshore windmill parks are today among the most advanced solutions to dramatically reduce pollution deriving from traditional power stations: in fact, the Nysted project, which will be completed by 2003, will save the environment from about 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

The project has positive environmental implications and Pirelli is proud to supply the most technological and advanced solutions that will satisfy even the latest market requests. The contract - the first for Pirelli within the offshore wind farm sector in the Northern Europe - proves that the Pirelli Group is one of the leading companies in a market whose growth rate is expected to be double-digit within the next years.

SEAS have chosen Pirelli as the supplier of these cables because the company represents the latest technology also when it comes to low loss of energy. The offshore wind farm and the cables will therefore be an environmentally friendly solution.

Pirelli is a global manufacturer of Energy Cables and Systems, Telecom Cables and Systems and Tyres. With 40,000 employees, 86 plants and total sales of Euro 7.477 billion, Pirelli ranks among the world leaders. The company is increasingly focusing its R& D and manufacturing resources and competencies on leading-edge technologies, as witnessed by the recent establishment of the advanced Pirelli Labs.

SEAS Group, the largest consumer owned energy group in Denmark, supplies energy to about 230.000 customers. SEAS Group operates a wide spread transmission and distribution grid - and within the SEAS Group, SEAS Wind Energy Centre is one of Europe's largest and most experienced consultancies in on- and off shore wind park projects.
