Pirelli wins OPGW cables contracts in Brasil
PIRELLI TO PROVIDE 2.000 KM OF OPGW FIBER OPTIC CABLES IN BRASIL
The projects - globally worth 15 million Euros - will improve control system of aerial power lines
Milan , 19 December 2003 - Pirelli Telecom Cables Brazil has been awarded contracts - globally worth 15 million Euros - for providing 2,000 km of OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) cables and services to a group of energy transmission utilities, coordinated by Brazilian Energy Agency ANEEL. Companies involved are Centrais Eltricas do Norte do Brasil - Eletronorte, Companhia de Transmisso de Energia Eltrica Paulista - CTEEP, Sul Transmissora de Energia - STE e Cachoeira Paulista Transmissora de Energia - CPTE.
OPGW cables were chosen in order to ensure the best efficiency of transmission system and to accomplish tight requests of ANEEL for control system. Pirelli thus confirms its leadership in this technologically advanced segment market. The OPGW cable in fact performs a dual role. It protects the electrical network from fault current and lightning damage in the same manner as a conventional earth wire whilst the inclusion of optical fibers - completely unaffected by the electrical environment - within the cable, provides a telecommunication system capable of transmitting high speed voice and data.
Thanks to their characteristics and to fiber optics, Pirelli cables - which include 8 to 72 fibers and have the armour of galvanized steel wire - were chosen as the best solution for the control system of power lines, as well as for strengthening telecommunication lines in regions of Maranhao and Para , Rio Grande do Sul and Sa Paulo . The advanced technology performed will also allow for a " live" installation of the cables, without shutting down power line while installing.
