Saturday of the Gaerne Estoril Round confirms the outstanding performance of the new race and qualifying solutions brought by Pirelli

New absolute record for the Estoril Circuit done by Rea with the new qualifying solution, whereas the Z0628 development solution is the most used front tyre in the race.

Scott Redding wins Race 1 on Ducati, Steven Odendaal triumphs in WorldSSP with his third victory of the season.

Less than one week after the action in Aragón (Spain), the first day of Gaerne Estoril Round races has come to an end, the second round of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship, at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal, where only the WorldSBK and WorldSSP categories are competing this week.

Pirelli received confirmation of the new qualifying tyre’s outstanding performance on this circuit as well. The absolute track record of 1’36.154, done by Toprak Razgatlioglu in the 2020 Superpole, was broken by no fewer than three riders - Jonathan Rea, Scott Redding and Alex Lowes. The best time was done by pole man Jonathan Rea, at 1'35.876.

WorldSBK Race 1 had three different manufacturers on the podium within nine tenths of a second, confirmation of the versatility and adaptability of Pirelli’s DIABLO Superbike competition tyres. Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) took the win in Race 1, relying on the super soft SCX solution at the rear; Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) finished on the second step of the podium, confirming his skill on this circuit, ahead of Reigning World Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) in third place.

The WorldSSP class also provided an action-packed race full of upsets and surprises. Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team / Yamaha YZF R6) took his third consecutive win of 2021 ahead of Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R) in second place and Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) in third.

The rear solution used by most of the WorldSBK category riders was the super soft standard SCX solution (option A), whereas the remainder of the grid went with the soft SC0 solution (option B). At the front, most of the riders opted instead for the Z0628 development solution (option C).

In the Supersport class, almost all the riders used the standard soft solutions, SC1 (option A) on the front and SC0 (option A) for the rear.

WorldSBK Race 1:

Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) started well from the second spot on the grid, taking the race lead early ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) in second place, with Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) and Michael Ruben Rinaldi (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) battling it out for third. Behind them were, Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), forced to start from the tenth spot on the grid, Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team / Yamaha YZF R1) and Eugene Laverty (RC Squadra Corse / BMW M 1000 RR). In the second half of the race, Reigning World Champion Jonathan Rea, with an excellent pace, began closing the gap behind the leading duo made up of Razgatlioglu and Redding. And outstanding performance by Álvaro Bautista (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000 RR-R) as well who, after starting from eighteenth place, managed to fight his way all the way up to eighth place behind BMW rider Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team / BMW M 1000 RR). In the final laps, three different manufacturers engaged in a spectacular battle for the top step of the podium: Scott Redding skilfully fended off attacks by the Turkish rider who, in turn, sought to defend his position against Kawasaki rider Jonathan Rea’s constant attempts to overtake. The positions, however, remained unchanged: Scott finished first, ahead of Razgatlioglu (second) and Rea in third place.

Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Corse Clienti / MV Agusta F3 675), forced to start from pit lane, demonstrated outstanding pace, managing to fight his way back up through the pack to finish eleventh. In the second half of the race, Steven Odendaal attacked the German rider on multiple occasions, momentarily taking the race lead, but on the last lap, the overtake stuck: Odendaal finished first for the third time in a row ahead of Oettl in second and Frenchman Jules Cluzel in third.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the riders for WorldSBK Race 1 and WorldSSP Race 1:

In WorldSBK, the most used front solution was the Z0628 development solution in soft compound (option C), chosen by nine riders. The rest of the grid preferred the Y1231 development solution (option A) and the standard SC1 solution (option B). For the rear, fifteen out of the 22 riders chose the super soft standard SCX solution (option A), whereas the remainder of the grid preferred the standard soft SC0 solution (option B).

In WorldSSP Race 1, almost the entire grid chose to race with standard soft solutions: on the front, the most used solution was the standard soft SC1 (option A), whereas on the rear the standard soft SC0 (option A) was the unanimous choice. For the front, the standard medium SC2 (option B) was used by Michel Fabrizio (G.A.P. MOTOZOO Racing by Puccetti / Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Galang Hendra Pratama (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6).
