Scott Redding takes Race 1 in the WorldSBK Pirelli Navarra Round, SCX compound rear solutions brought by Pirelli play a key role

With the first race of the Navarra weekend, Scott Redding finishes on the top step of the podium ahead of Rea on Kawasaki and Razgatlioglu on Yamaha. Aegerter wins again on Yamaha in the WorldSSP class to confirm his leadership in the overall standings

The first day of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship Pirelli Navarra Round has just come to a close at the Navarra circuit, where the riders had to reckon with the difficulties of racing on a brand new track for the factory derivative bikes, as well as the high temperatures of the Basque location.

Coming out on top in WorldSBK Race 1 was Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) who repeated his performance from Race 2 in Most, riding his Ducati to the top step of the podium ahead of Kawasaki rider Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) and Yamaha rider Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1), respectively number one and number two in the overall championship standings.

Racing Director for Pirelli Business Unit Moto, Giorgio Barbier, handed the awards to the three riders on the WorldSBK podium.

In WorldSSP600, on the other hand, Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) won his seventh race of the season, confirming his leadership in the overall championship standings, finishing ahead of South African Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team / Yamaha YZF R6) and San Marino native Luca Bernardi (CM Racing / Yamaha YZF R6), who earned his fourth podium of the season.

Pirelli comes away from the day satisfied with the work done and the performance of their tyres, specifically the rear solutions in super soft compound. In the WorldSSP category, the standard SCX tyre (option A) was used by the entire starting grid for Race 1, whereas in the WorldSBK class, the majority of the riders chose to use the A0557 spec SCX development tyre (option A), with the remaining six riders choosing the standard SCX: Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R), Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), Álvaro Bautista (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000 RR-R), Michael Ruben Rinaldi (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R), Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing HONDA Team / Honda CBR1000RR-R) and Leon Haslam (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000 RR-R).

WorldSBK Race 1:

Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) started well from the second spot on the grid, moving into the race lead straight away, but during the first lap, pole man Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) overtook him, demonstrating an outstanding pace from the start. Behind them were Yamaha riders Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) ahead of Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team / BMW M 1000 RR) and Chaz Davies (Team GOELEVEN / Ducati Panigale V4 R). On the sixth lap, the Ducati rider managed to overtake for the top step of the podium, with the pair already almost three seconds ahead of the Yamaha riders. With two-thirds of the race done, Scott Redding was still showing the same aggressiveness demonstrated in Race 2 in Most and he began to increase the gap ahead of Rea while Toprak Razgatlioglu, after overtaking his teammate for the podium position, set out to hunt down the six-time World Champion and his Kawasaki. The final laps confirmed the same positions, with Scott Redding finishing first ahead of Jonathan Rea and Toprak Razgatlioglu - a result that leaves the championship standings intact.

WorldSSP Yamaha Team / Yamaha YZF R6) and pole man and championship leader Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6). However, Simon Jespersen (Kallio Racing / Yamaha YZF R6) overtook the latter on the second lap whilst Odendaal managed to gain the upper hand against the Swiss rider, taking over the race lead.

Bringing up the rear of the leading group were San Marino native Luca Bernardi (CM Racing / Yamaha YZF R6), Frenchman Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) and Italian Federico Caricasulo (Biblion Iberica Yamaha Motoxracing / Yamaha YZF R6). In the second half of the race, it was a battle for the top step of the podium between Aegerter and Odendaal, whereas Gonzalez crashed out and was forced to retire. Luca Bernardi was lying third and looking like a threat for second several times, but in the end, he was unable to make the pass. On the fourteenth lap, Aegerter did the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1’41.536, going on to finish first, four seconds and a half ahead of Steven Odendaal (second) and five seconds ahead of Luca Bernardi.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the riders for WorldSBK Race 1 and WorldSSP Race 1:

In the WorldSBK category, for Race 1, the rear solution used by the majority of the riders on the grid was the A0557 SCX development tyre (option B) which garnered, as it had in the Misano round, extremely favourable feedback from the riders. Unlike the rest of the grid, six riders raced on the standard SCX (option A): Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R), Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), Álvaro Bautista (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000 RR-R), Michael Ruben Rinaldi (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R), Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing HONDA Team / Honda CBR1000RR-R) and Leon Haslam (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000 RR-R).

As for the front, all the riders raced on soft SC1 solutions, with the A0721 spec SC1 (option A) proving to be the most used tyre on the grid.

In WorldSSP Race 1, all the riders on the grid opted for the standard SCX (option A) on the rear. For the front, twenty-eight riders out of thirty chose the standard SC1 (option A), whereas Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Corse Clienti / MV Agusta F3 675) and Simon Jespersen (Kallio Racing / Yamaha YZF R6) used the standard SC2 (option B).
