Seven not lucky number for Pirelli at Road America

Intersport Lola Disqualified Early In Race Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 22, 2004 - After six rounds of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) Pirelli-shod teams could claim six straight class wins, numerous podiums, poles and fastest laps. But there was no victory celebration in the seventh round at the Road America 500 today. Scot Robin Liddell had scored four P2-class victories with Clint Field in Field's #30 Intersport Racing Lola B2K/Judd in the first six races this year, but this streak ended with a broken throttle cable in the first thirty minutes of today's sprint race. Making matters worse was the team's disqualification for the mechanics working on the car outside of the pits. With no points scored today, Intersport's championship hopes are virtually gone. Earlier this year, Field finished third in class at the 12 Hours of Sebring won by the then Pirelli-shod Miracle Motorsports team, giving Pirelli five P2 victories in six rounds this season. Field also was the youngest driver ever to win Le Mans, leading the Intersport team to victory in P2 class this past June, three days before his 21st birthday. Terry Borcheller and Johnny Mowlem earned their sixth podium of the year in the ACEMCO Saleen S7R, third behind the dominant factory Corvettes. ACEMCO Motorsports now has a substantial lead for the coveted IMSA Cup presented to the top independent team in GTS. Pirelli-shod teams will be testing during the coming month as they prepare for the eighth round of the ALMS, the 10-hour enduro at Petit Le Mans on Saturday, September 25, at Road Atlanta.
