A RECORD ENTRY FOR GTWC EUROPE IN MONZA
Braga: With three obligatory pit stops, teams will have to pay close attention to tyre management
With the Spa 24 Hours on the horizon, this weekend’s event at Monza serves as a general test on a track that has often witnessed some of the most spectacular racing in the series. Held on 30 May and 1 June, it is one of the most eagerly anticipated endurance races of the year. It looks like being closely contested with 59 crews entered. The hare the hounds will be chasing will be the BMW GT3 driven by Charles Weerts, Kelvin van der Linde and Ugo de Wilde entered by the WRT team, which took the top two places in Monza last year.
“It’s definitely going to be an interesting and challenging weekend for everyone,” commented Matteo Braga, Circuit Activity Manager Pirelli. “Not just because of the record number of entries and the ever increasing level of competitiveness in GTWC, but also because of having to make a third obligatory pit stop, but with the same number of tyres available, which will make the final outcome harder to predict and will complicate team strategies. Given the characteristics of the race and the track, careful tyre management will be essential.”
The GT3 cars entered will run the P Zero DHG Pirelli slicks and the Cinturato WHB Pirelli in the case of rain, which at the moment is forecast to fall at some point over the course of the race which takes place on Sunday from 15.00 to 18.00.
These same tyres will also be used by competitors in the Monza weekend’s support race, the McLaren Trophy, for which Pirelli is again the sole supplier.
