Double win for Jonathan Rea who dominates the Tissot Superpole Race and Race 2 of the WorldSBK Gaerne Estoril Round. Most of the grid uses the new front solutions brought by Pirelli

The second round of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship packed with spectacular races: three different manufacturers on the podium in the SBK class, whereas in WorldSSP Aegerter takes his first win.

The Gaerne Estoril Round MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship weekend at the Estoril circuit has just come to an end, with yet more spectacular races.

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) was unstoppable at Estoril: he won the Tissot Superpole Race and reconfirmed his status as champion in the afternoon for Race 2 as well, thereby giving Kawasaki a brilliant double win and confirming his first place in the championship standings. Also on the podium in Race 2 were Chaz Davies (Team GOELEVEN / Ducati Panigale V4 R) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1). Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1), 2020 WorldSSP World Champion, finished Race 2 in fifth place, for his best result of the season.

In WorldSSP, Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) had an outstanding race, taking home his first win of the season ahead of Luca Bernardi (CM Racing / Yamaha YZF R6), who achieved an important result, finishing second, and Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R) rounding out the podium.

In terms of tyres, the protagonist of the Tissot Superpole Race was the super soft standard SCX tyre (option A), chosen by most of the grid with the exception of three riders, who were on the standard SC0 (option B). At the front, most of the riders preferred using the soft Y1231 (option A) and Z0628 (option C) development solutions.

In WorldSBK Race 2, the rear super soft standard SCX solution (option A) was also chosen by the majority of the grid, including several riders who had preferred the soft standard SC0 solution (option B) in Race 1. At the front, on the other hand, the most used solution was once again the soft Z0628 development tyre (option C). Great satisfaction in the Pirelli camp with the performance of the tyres used, allowing for action-packed races with consistent and faster race times than the Estoril Round last season.

In WorldSSP600, almost all the riders chose the soft standard solutions for Race 2, with the standard SC1 solution (option A) on the front and the standard SC0 solution on the rear (option A).

WorldSBK Tissot Superpole Race:

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) had an outstanding start, but a few turns later, Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) gained the upper hand over his compatriot, moving into the lead. Close behind was Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1), already threatening as early as the second lap, overtaking both of the riders ahead of him to take the race lead. Behind the world champion were Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team / Yamaha YZF R1), Michael Ruben Rinaldi (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR). On the third lap, Redding made a mistake that cost him two positions, whereas Rea was demonstrating an excellent pace, doing his first best lap of the race before overtaking the Turkish rider on the fifth lap. In the second half of the race, there was a battle for the podium position between Redding and Gerloff with the Ducati winning out in the end. When the chequered flag came out, Rea took the first win for Kawasaki on this track ahead of Razgatlioglu and Redding.

WorldSBK Race 2:

After observing a minute of silence in honour of Jason Dupasquier, the late Moto3 rider victim of an accident this race weekend in Mugello, Race 2 of the WorldSBK Gaerne Estoril Round got underway. Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) got off to an excellent start, moving into the race lead straight away, followed closely by teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) and Yamaha riders Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1) and Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team / Yamaha YZF R1). On the second lap, Gerloff lost control of his bike, ending up in the gravel and also involving Rinaldi, forcing both to retire. Redding continued to lead the race ahead of Razgatlioglu who, after doing two long laps as a penalty for his early start, ended up in fifth place ahead of teammate Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK / Yamaha YZF R1). Redding began pulling away from the rest of the riders, followed by Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR), Chaz Davies (Team GOELEVEN / Ducati Panigale V4 R) and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR). An intense battle for first between Rea and Redding resulted in the latter crashing out into the gravel, re-entering the race in sixteenth place. Jonathan Rea finished the race in first place, taking home an important double win on a rather unfamiliar track, ahead of Chaz Davies (Team GOELEVEN / Ducati Panigale V4 R) in second and Toprak Razgatlioglu in third.

WorldSSP Yamaha Team / Yamaha YZF R6), Federico Caricasulo (GMT94 Yamaha / Yamaha YZF R6) and Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura / Kawasaki ZX-6R), who battled for the podium position throughout the early laps of the race. The Swiss rider demonstrated an excellent pace, overtaking Caricasulo and then going on to threaten De Rosa for a spot on the podium. The leading four were extremely close and in the second half of the race, they engaged in an intense battle with a constant back-and-forth of positions Three laps before the chequered flag, the German rider made a mistake that cost him several positions, De Rosa crashed out, ending up in the gravel, and Odendaal ran into a technical problem with his bike. The Pirelli solutions chosen by the riders for the WorldSBK Superpole Race, WorldSBK Race 2 and WorldSSP Race 2:

For the WorldSBK Superpole Race, all except three of the riders on the grid preferred the development solutions brought by Pirelli at the front, as opposed to the standard SC1, with choices divided between the soft Y1231 development solution (option A) and the soft Z0628 development solution (option C). The three who chose the standard SC1 solution (option B) were Ducati riders Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Tito Rabat, and Yamaha rider Christophe Ponsson. On the rear, on the other hand, the majority of the riders confirmed their choice of the super soft standard SCX solution (option A), whereas Kawasaki riders Jonathan Rea, Lucas Mahias and Alex Lowes preferred the soft standard SC0 solution (option B).

In WorldSBK Race 2, the rear super soft standard SCX solution (option A) was also chosen by the majority of the grid, including several riders who had preferred the soft standard SC0 solution (option B) in Race 1. Jonathan Rea, Alex Lowes, Lucas Mahias and Christophe Ponsson are the riders who preferred using the soft standard SC0. At the front, on the other hand, the most used solution was once again the soft Z0628 development tyre (option C).

In WorldSSP Race 2, almost all the riders relied on the front soft standard SC1 solution (option A) and the rear soft standard SC0 solution (option A).
