THE ARMA DEI CARABINIERI AND PIRELLI SIGN AN AGREEMENT TO TEST CYBER TYRE ON SELECT VEHICLES OF THE ROME RADIOMOBILE UNIT
The Pirelli system integrates artificial intelligence and computer vision to identify critical issues in the road network, helping to improve its safety. The use of Pirelli technology will be fully automatic, requiring no action from the operators
Rome (Italy), September 21st, 2026 – The General Headquarters of the Arma dei Carabinieri and Pirelli have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to test Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology on select vehicles of the Rome Radiomobile Unit. The goal is to monitor the "health status" of Rome's road infrastructure to identify potential risk factors and contribute to improving road safety. The initiative begins with the installation of the Pirelli system on five Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles used for territorial control and emergency response services. Through sensors integrated into the tyres, proprietary algorithms, and advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies, Cyber Tyre will enable the collection and analysis of data regarding the state of the road network, contributing to the timely identification of potential hazards.
In this trial launched with the Arma dei Carabinieri, data collected from the tyres will be integrated with data gathered by on-board cameras and analyzed using artificial intelligence algorithms developed by technology partner Univrses. The combination of sensors and computer vision will detect road surface anomalies or signage issues, helping to build a continuously updated map of road conditions. The use of Pirelli technology will be completely automatic and requires no intervention from the operators.
Cyber Tyre has already been used in similar monitoring projects with Movyon (an Autostrade per l'Italia group company) and Region Apulia.
On the occasion of the agreement signing, the Commander General of the Arma dei Carabinieri, Lt. Gen. Pirelli Cyber Tyre has transformed the tyre from a mechanical component into an intelligent device. Thanks to a sensor embedded inside the tyre, the system collects information, processes it through Pirelli software and algorithms, and transfers it in real time to onboard systems or dedicated platforms. The technology can be applied both in vehicles, where it interacts with ABS, ESP and traction control systems to enhance the effectiveness of electronic control systems, and in infrastructure monitoring, enabling the creation of road network health maps that help road authorities plan maintenance interventions.
